I left Hamilton after 35 years. I lived in the St Clair neighborhood for 15 years. I wanted to move up north for years and with the insane housing market my dream became a reality. The home I bought in 2006 for $ 225.000 I sold for $ 865.000 in 2021. I made more money selling that house than I did working at Ford the last 10 years! Although I enjoyed Hamilton the proposed LRT bought up so much property ... only to have it sit vacant and be used by squatters and drug addicts that would wander into my neighborhood breaking into vehicles and knocking on doors asking for money. I lived in between Delaware and Cumberland streets right near the base of the escarpment. It was a fantastic area to live and raise children but I am honestly happy that I got the opportunity to retire and move to a less densely populated part of the province! Great video! Cheers ✌

Hamilton has so much potential, but it needs a major makeover… The parks showcased in this video are absolutely beautiful, however they are manly populated with the homeless. Hamilton needs to address the homeless crisis, and make it a priority.

I couldn't agree more - the home affordability crisis is not improving the situation either. All of these video clips were taken during the pandemic when the tent communities were in full swing. Only a handful had a lot of inhabitants... most were as you saw here in the video.

Your videos are great. It's taken a long time but the city is finally on the path toward a positive future. I'm glad you're showing that to people here. One correction though: the City Centre is not as described in the video. It opened in the early 1990s as an Eaton Centre, and when Eaton's went under it was renamed. While its first few years as a mall were fairly good, that did not last. It's probably the last big example of a failed attempt at urban renewal in the city. It does have one historic feature: the clock in the tower at the corner of James and York is from the old city hall that used to be in that part of downtown. The Centre Mall on Barton between Ottawa and Kenilworth sounds like what you may have been referring to -- it was built in the 1950s and did become one of the country's first large indoor shopping malls. It was demolished in the early 2000s and stores of The Centre on Barton are now on that site.

Hamilton real has the potential to be one of Canada's leading cities, if the improve transit, biking and pedestrians infrastructure. hopefully once outdated zoning laws can be changed and more missing middle housing appears, it will attract more newcomers, young talent and people who want to have a family.

I dare to say, a very good place for new immigrations, lots of free ESL classes, very good public transportation system, lots of manufacture jobs, as a new comer several years ago, I didn't speak good English and didn't own a car, also had financial pressure, these things are very important to me. Several things I didn't like are, so many homeless people in downtown area , very difficult to find a full-time job ( I lived in Hamilton for 3 yrs, worked for agency all the time), and wages are a little bit lower than other area (by my personal feeling). Now I move to Waterloo area, but still back to Hamilton very often, I have some friends still live in there. And as a foodie, in downtown Hamilton there are lots of good restaurants worth to taste from time to time. last but not least, the first Tim Hortons also in Hamilton, it's on Ottawa St, if you are a big fan of Tim, it is a must go place for you.

It would be nice if we didn't have a height restriction. I feel like in the future it would limit housing opportunities due to buildings being filled due to it not being able to exceed the escarpment.
@TheGenuineRealtors
@TheGenuineRealtors 2 жыл бұрын
It's such a tricky thing to navigate... people on the mountain don't want their views cut off by massive buildings but also there are buildings who have applied for variances to exceed the escarpment height. Will likely be a mixture of both! I just hope we can loose the NIMBY mentality as we intensify the empty spaces throughout Hamilton 🤞

Hi Rochelle! Thanks for the video! very helpful. My wife and I are newcomers, and we will arrive in hamilton in early June. We booked a temporary place for one month around downtown (at the James st. -Barton st. intersection). We've heard about homeless people, and my wife is kinda scared about walking alone in the city while I'm at work. Do we need to be worried? Is the area safe at night?

Sorry to tell you but, that is not an area that you are going to want to stay. if you want any kind of chance at not being harassed by the junkie homeless people 24/7 you can not stay anywhere in the downtown area. Also not a great idea to walk around at night.

Great job on another passiontate and informative video. Subscribed. I completely agree with the necessity for pedestrian safety to ensure a vibrant core. Safety also needs to extend to EVERY component of it however, or their plan will fail. People, and especially those with children, need to feel and be safe in order for them to visit, shop, dine etc. Part of the Downtown currently has a crime and safety problem that is the direct result of where a much needed social service facility happens to be located. This is a very polarizing issue of course because the services are in great need but regardless of anyone’s steadfast position, lawlessness and a lack of accountability will eliminate any chance of revitalization. I’m not hating just stating fact from a lifetime of experience backed by an unfortunate abundance of urban failure examples out there. This doesn’t apply to all the clients but wishing people will make better choices while doing nothing but waitng for that to happen is not a winning solution. Common sense planning that prioritizes public safety and accountability while creating attractive businesses, parks, venues etc. that people want to attend, is the only winning solution.
@TheGenuineRealtors
@TheGenuineRealtors 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! It's such a dynamic issue that Hamilton has had to work towards solutions -- it's such a layered dilemma that there is no simple solution, but rather like you said, a multi-faceted approach that addresses concerns on as many front as possible to build a system that supports the locals as well as those in need of help/support. Hopefully Hamilton's future will strike that balance! Thanks so much for checking it out, sharing your thoughts 🙏 & for subscribing!

Hi Ed - thanks for watching & taking the time to comment! I truly hope there is some affordable house options in the near future & more investment into the services that help unhoused people get back on their feet. But as we all know, this isn't just a Hamilton problem... it's affecting most cities across our country & there are a lot of people relying on social services (like the food banks) to get by these days. Thankfully Hamilton is already attracting lots of talented people so let's hope the trend continues & we have even more people fall in love with the benefits of living in Hamilton ☺️

Okay, that is one way of looking at Hamilton. aka- The Hammer. And sadly, no, that moniker does not reference it's hard-working industry. No, it is so called because that is often the weapon of choice for any of the crazy, drugged out, poverty-stricken and insanely violent members of the 'Hamilton walk-by-night social club.' Oh yes, Hamilton, city of dreams. Until you come out of your coma from the random citizen who clocked you because... well... okay, just because. This city does have a bright side though- If you are preparing for a long prison sentence, any of the street walkers, hobo's, drug addicts, cut-throats, single-moms begging for change so they can: "Buy some f**kin smokes." (True-wish it wasn't) will gladly give you some advice, or at least try to fight you. Ah yes, Hamilton. What a shithole! No offence to actual shitholes out there.

This episode was focusing on the future plans but did absolutely include a section on unhoused people (you can skip forward in the chapters - it was near the end of the episode) but with the new infrastructure being installed, the downtown Hamilton you’re describing is changing rapidly. Also, I’ve yet to visit any major city that doesn’t have panhandling - it’s an unfortunate truth that there is poverty everywhere (even in places that don’t have panhandling 😔)

Barely into the video and laughing my arse off already , LRT and going Green is an absolute joke along with the dumb virtue signaling crosswalk . Hamilton continuing its trend of going woke (even tearing statues down) and going broke . The amount of homeless camping on the streets is pathetic and for some reason the shelters for the homeless are in prime spots downtown ( the old bus station, across from First Ontario Centre , and another on James st near Barton (these places are needed but pick places with lower overhead and less impact on what should be busy shopping areas). The new harbor west go station was built in a rush(summer games) with no heated walks ( I am sure our government will come and rip things up in a year or so to do so ) and piss poor landscaping now full of weeds and garbage. Crime is on the rise after decades of it falling , you also pay high taxes compared to services rendered . Hamilton does have plenty to love but I am still happy to get the hell out of there after living there for decades .
