I moved to Hamilton in 1975 and am so glad I did! The botanical gardens, waterfalls and trails, closeness of Lake Ontario, are wonderful and so easy to get to. Day trips to the Niagara region, Port Dover on Lake Erie, or Mennonite country in Kitchener are all do-able for lovely day tripping. Thankfully as an RN 20 years ago my salary was enough to allow me to buy a modest house as a single person, and I paid it off completely in 15 years -- unfortunately housing prices have gone crazy here, but that is true all over the developed world these days. Pollution has improved a lot since the steel mills cut back and we have more health care and other clean industries. Hamilton is still a friendly city, and it won't take long for you to settle in if you just smile and say hello! If you are well educated and love the out of doors, this is the place for you!

Voted the LRT down twice but now you can't vote against it and your actually considered racist somehow for disagreement. Many people dumped into a brutal rental market and many others into Gage Park due to expropriation. We have plenty of buses, taxis and bike lanes. The first bike lane was on Cannon to celebrate the construction of TH Stadium and hosting the Paralympics with the promise of it being temporary because deleting a lane doesn't work traffic well on garbage day. We all know how well that promise worked out. Now the bike lane is considered a legacy of the paralympic games. They're going to eventually close the core to domestic traffic. Hamilton is a city bent on ending domestic automobile autonomy and railroading its habitants onto public transit.

Hamilton is a great place to live. However there are a number of problems with the home market. The houses are overpriced, driven up by commuters to Toronto. The latest news release says houses average $1 million. It is making it hard for many to enter the home market for the first time.

This is true. From Toronto commuters but also from people living in other countries, buying homes and renting them out to our locals.. There is now a law being passed though, to stop that a bit.. That way people can't buy out all of our property when they don't even live around here 🤷‍♂️ I'm a tradesman, and the word of mouth around here is that within ten years, most of the poor and drug ridden areas will be pushed out and moved to Saint Catherine's.. They want to make it too expensive for them to live here..

How does a strong market price BE A NEGATIVE? If you own the house you are creating wealth! If you are a real estate agent you make more commission! If you are the government you make more money on property taxes. If you are a bank you make more money in interest! If an area is doing well YOU SAY ITS A NEGATIVE? PLEASE GO TO FORREST HILL AND MAKE A VIDEO STATING ITS OVERPRICED AND A WASTE OF MONEY! 🤔

@@bb590 The prices are high just like formerly cheaper communities due to commuters and investors scooping up the houses. Many houses in Hamilton go for over $100,000 above asking price. A town house across the street with a narrow lot, two bedrooms and one bathroom is selling for $550,000. The same place 10 years ago sold for $209,000. The high price ultimately makes it hard for young people to make it into the housing market. It also means the monthly mortgage payments and property tax assessment will be higher. I am also thinking about the next generation.

@@scottbrandon6244 so what about PORT CREDIT and MIMICO? Those areas were SLUMS 40 years ago. All seedy motels and dirtbags. Now they turned them into expensive areas! So those areas are OVERPRICED and WORTHLESS TOO? Hamilton is such a beautiful area with natural parks, trails, waterfalls, waterfronts. Yes, downtown is not great with the usual depressed areas. YET, saying it should be cheap is insane! If people cannot afford a place to live then there are areas for them. Nova scotia, Windsor, rural areas in Canada. Just because the GTHA is popular doesnt mean EVERYONE can or SHOULD be able to afford it! Try your logic in LONDON UK! The homes within the M25 go for over 10 Million £ easily. Some are double, triple that price! Please go there and complain about people not being able to afford those houses too!

Burlington or if you can afford it, Oakville . Hamilton would be good for investment buying though as people leaving Toronto driving prices up . (imo of course and lived in the Hammer for decades, and still have some love for it .)

I've lived in Hamilton for over 70 years and so I can say that you have given a very good evaluation of life in this city. I do, however, want to mention two things. You state that one way streets can change direction overnight without warning. This is not true. The few times that this has happened, there is adequate notification in the local newspaper and also posted signs announcing the change in advance. As far as schools go, I've been a teacher with both school boards and the quality of education, the staff and the curriculum is standard across the city. Lower test scores are not an indication on the quality of education in an individual school. They are an indication of schools with immigrant and refugee populations, where the children do not initially speak English; or of students living in poverty, that impacts on their learning in so many ways. Any school is a good school. Other than that, you have summed things up very well for Hamilton. This is an informative and well shot video.

Yes Mary! I couldn't agree more!! I actually very much dislike the blanket evaluation of the test scores which is why I encourage people to speak with other parents at a school before they decide weather it's a good fit - so many wonder people (sounds like you're included in that group) pour so much of their love, time & energy into their classrooms & schools. Having poor standardized test scores is by no means an indication of the quality of education. And, yes, the comment about the direction changing overnight is completely tongue in cheek (which is why I giggled when I said it) because so many locals mention it, but if you pay attention to notices, they are always clearly indicated in advance 😊 Thank you so much for watching & for all you have done for the community over the years 🙏💛

Hi Rochelle, i lived in Hamilton for 3 years, though the affordabilty of housing is great, there pollution levels caused by the metallurgical industry on the shore of lake Ontario is almost intolerable, not to mention the crime rate, unemployment rate and homeless people that roam around the city, i hope in the future all this issues are rightfully address by local authorities, the potential is there.

Thanks so much for watching & taking the time to comment 🙏You bring up some excellent points & some of them were covered in the video - the fallout from the industry heavily depends on which neighbourhood you choose to call home but is certainly worth considering (though one would hope as we continue forward, better options will be created to help limit the impact). Unemployment in Hamilton has been dropping for the past consecutive months & is below the Provincial average so there are absolutely options out there, it just depends on which industry you're looking for. As for the crime rate, if you look across the provincial & national level we are substantially lower across all types of crime ( Property, violent & total measured /1000 people to help better compare) So really, for a city of it's size, we are doing well but there's always room for improvement 👍 I can't wait to see Hamilton come into its full potential in the years ahead! I live in downtown right near the YWCA. I've also lived in T.O...each city has homeless issues, but I also think that Hamilton is full of amazing people who want to take care of these people. It's not an issue for me. I love Hamilton and I don't consider the homeless ppl to be an issue to me. It's an awesome city full of caring people.

The highway 403 entrance to Hamilton, adjacent to the RBG Cootes Paradise Sanctuary/Niagara Escarpment and Pier 4 Bayfront Park is very attractive compared to Toronto.

Indeed, and the westbound drive along the 401 through Pickering can be called scenic for a couple of km but then you get past Rouge Hill and it's paved desolation until you head south onto the DVP but you're well within city limits. LOL

Weather is very good. Most of the rain or snow storms go around us and affect North of Toronto much more than Hamilton. I would avoid downtown for night life -- drugs and violence are taking over the North end, and downtown. Stay home after midnight is your best bet.

I’m living in Markham. I just signed my real estate purchase agreement for my first Hamilton home today and have my inspection on Sunday. Thanks for the video! My initial exposure to all of the boarded up shops and houses was a bit of a culture shock for me that I had to work at to look beyond but your video helps me feel it was a good choice.

My wife is in banking and processes over 50 mil in mortgages per year so she used a broker from North York who had Hamilton experience but I will say a local broker with your kind of life experience would have saved me endless hours of research about the region but then again, then I wouldn’t have seen your video 😊

Much to your credit, If I had it to do over again, I would have searched for an agent local to the market I wanted to buy in, that way my agent could work more effectively with me rather than me having to research everything that my agent doesn't know from another agent. ;\ Live and learn. My agent was a sweet person though so I had to show some loyalty.

I grew up in Hamilton 1950s to 70s, and not sure the speeds now, but 50 yrs ago, when I still lived in the city, you could cross Main St, from the City Hall to Gage Park without one red light if you stayed at 34 miles an hour. There was very little shopping along that section then until you got to the Delta. The main shopping areas below the mountain, were around or close to Gore Park, James/John/King(downtown), along Barton from the tracks heading East, Ottawa Street ( we called that uptown) and Kenilworth to the Centre. On the Mtn, Concession Street was the main shopping street, most other shopping was in various plazas, quite a few heading south along Upper James

It was very similar until recently! Now there are restrictions on large trucks & there are talks about removing the timed lights to help with pedestrian safety.

I live downtown Hamilton, on Wentworth between Cannon and Barton and its awful. I do love the food and entertainment scene but you definitely have to be careful where you buy. One street could be awful and the very next one could be nice. I'd love to see you do one of these overviews on Cambridge, I just bought in Galt.

I haven’t collected much footage from Cambridge as I maybe have one or two clients a year looking out that way though it is home to my favourite park to take the kids! And yes, Barton right now is a mess but they are working on completely redoing the street… will be a completely different landscape in the next few years 🤞💛

Yeah green spaces is such a pro. gotta love the litter and homeless covered "green spaces" that usually stand so close to traffic you cant hear birds. Just great.

Feel free to check out some of the more positive groups who do litter clean ups to try and help. It’s truly unfortunate that some people see the green space as their personal dump but truly inspiring that SO MANY LOCALS take the responsibility upon themselves to clean up. Would love to see more of the latter move into the city & help be the driving force of positive change 🙌🏼

My understanding of the harbour beach closures (as noted by another viewer), is contamination from Goose poop. The water is the cleanest it's been in almost 100 years, and is getting better all the time due to the upgrades to the water treatment system, and major progress on the Randle Reef containment project. Also, in your hit against students and student housing, you show a row of boarded-up houses behind a chain-link fence (at 14:00). These houses have been purchased in order to be torn down to make room for further expansion of McMaster University. Oh yes, there are many student houses around town that are almost death traps, with ten bedrooms in a small house. As you noted, parents should absolutely help their children find safe housing. The bungalow next door to my house generally has six students living there, and they have consistently been decent neighbours.

It’s a old stigma we student need to face but people need to know there good people and bad people, Ik some students will trash rented homes and others will maintain it to the top degree

The goose poop is a very limited issue in comparison to the byproduct sludge left over from the metal production before environmental hazards were fully understood & also by the waste that overflowed into the bay triggering a massive cleanup. The goose poop issue is a factor & the BEST way to stop that is for people to STOPP FEEDING THE DUCKS/GEESE. It’s actually a huge problem, more so for the animals than for the water. They don’t get all of the vitamins & nutrients they need when we feed them our food & they contribute to the pollution of the water. So if you see someone feeding them, take a moment to educate on the ramifications. There was no “hit” against students. It’s simply a con for some who live in the area & in the effort of giving a balanced view of issues affecting this incredibly large & diverse city, it has to be mentioned. Just because it’s not an issue for you, doesn’t mean it’s not an issue to someone. And yes, I’m well aware of the new development where those homes were - sometimes when you’re editing, you use stock footage that works to help propel the story forward. I’m glad to hear your neighbours have been wonderful & when I was a student I like to think my roommates & I were equally as lovely to live beside - everyone was young once ☺️

I was watching a video that had nothing to do with the election June 2nd 2022 and it said in 20 years there will be a good shortage as population is getting bigger. Nothing to do with Ukraine neither, Mr. Paul Miller mention during debate we have to start now for example with green houses . He did not point fingers but if my memory correct they all agreed we need farm land. You or I can not stop building over farm land. It is sad but true their will be a good shortage they say then we will have to, hopefully before then.

2 of my great nieces have attended French immersion in the Locke-Aberdeen area. They have done very well. Now they are in middle school in French and will probably switch to English for high school. It's important to introduce people to a second language well before the age of 12 for it to take hold.

The HSR (stands for Hamilton Street Railway) is the public transportation agency in Hamilton. There are lots of bus routes, DARTS for accessible transportation, & there are reduced fares for those who qualify. 🚍 The GO Transit system offers buses & trains for longer distance journeys 🚉 There is also the LRT (Light Rail Transit) which is going to connect the east to west corridor through the lower city (not on the Mountain) & will be a street car system that will allow the city to vastly improve the infrastructure along the LRT corridor 🙌 Hope this helps!

This is an issue across Canada - not just focused on Hamilton. Hopefully a balance can be struck between building homes & protecting our green spaces/fertile soil as well as some high speed commuting trains to help spread some of the density to more affordable areas beyond the GTA/GHA

I noticed nobody answered so in my best opinion , I haven't heard of or experienced any terrible dentists in Hamilton which I guess could say something about the dental programs around here (and that's about all I can say about that). For part time jobs I wouldn't be to worried about having any specific skills like learning to be a tattoo artist or anything, just a hard working attitude will get you a job mostly anywhere. There is jobs in ANY field of work you may desire at the time. One thing to say about Hamilton is that with so much growth there is TONS of business's popping up everywhere. Finding a part time job as a student can be easily achieved when moving here.

There are student housing options & lots of rentals nearby Mohawk but the market is competitive - you’ll want to prepare yourself for finding a place to call home while you study 😊 As for jobs - there are plenty of part time jobs in the area and if you’re going to school for dentistry it’s likely better to focus on your studies than worry about acquiring new skills to find a temporary job. Hamilton Was the industrial capital of Canada. Now just a bedroom city for Toronto folks cashing in on the value of their houses. I hate to say it as it's my home town but it has very few jobs, unless you want to work for Tim Hortons, Walmart, or have a PhD in a medical field. Property taxes are very high, and the city just lives on taxes from ral estate.

I don't forget thousands of seasonal workers. Also has a small splash pad as well as trails into the Royal Botanical Gardens "Cootes Paradise" marshes. One of the best places for a picnic & a hike for kids!

I find Burlington to be far worse. Hamilton has a number of alternate routes in the event of a major closure but in Burlington, if there’s a major problem on the QEW, you’re practically trapped if you’re Between the highway and the Lake.

I agree with much of what you are saying but the area created for swimming in west harbor is not really effected by the sludge over in the industrial area , it is the algae blooms preventing swimming . ( people will think it is cruel but there needs to be a serious culling of Canada geese their over population is not natural or healthy ).Anyways have a good day and good luck in your endeavors.

And since I’m the camera woman behind everything but the drone shots, there were homeless people & encampments (which I did show in the video) but out of respect for people’s privacy, I try to not get people whenever I can.

With the decline of heavy industry in the past few decades the air quality is typically better than Toronto with its traffic volumes. It is worse near the industrial areas or on the Beach Strip (although property values are still very high there).

It’s been steadily improving since the 80’s and there are a lot of carbon neutral efforts. We are very fortunate because of the nature sanctuaries & large canopies that help alleviate some of the air pollution but it’s a city & with the manufacturing history, it’s taking time to turn over that greener approach

Hamilton geography needs more exposure in this video. The Arts community,Healthcare,Industry,Retail,Education,Technology,Sports facilities and program have a grave disservice in this presentation. All are jewels in the Hamilton Crown. I would stay away from the homeless drug users that are arriviging droves. This is a people issue that all large communuties are facing. There is a lot to present and reveal with video and I think someone with an established historical knowledge of Hamilton with camera and editing skills is needed to make a truer representation of Hamilton. Oh yeah,Downtown Toronto is a 68km drive,Niagara Falls,72km drive,Kitchener 65km. All well within 45 minute arrival time....no traffic. When I think about this video if you are appealing to newcomers.....show more video.....much more video and a schedule of events. I know this is a tall order but I think you can rise to the task. My 2 cents.

I disagree that the timed lights are a con. Living in a hustle and bustle city like Hamilton we dont have time to get caught at every other light just so you can gawk at a few businesses downtown. We got to get to work or take our kids to scheduled practises etc. If you want to mosey around and shop park your car and go for a walk or bike ride. Hamilton has been really screwing up the streets over the last few years with their 2way street flips downtown. Its really bogged things down and if the city population keeps increasing over the years its going to.really jam things up. Fast traffic > Shopping

While these videos paint a pretty picture it couldn't be further from the truth. Pollution is horrible, the roads are a mess, homelessness is rampant, there's a massive drug problem and crime is way up. Oh, and housing is unaffordable even though most of the houses here are old and falling apart. That goes for the apartments too.

This video isn't trying to paint anything, but show what the city was like (2 years ago when it was recorded). All of those issues are on the climb in ALL of Ontario... Hamilton isn't a special echo chamber where it's intensified. There is crisis after crisis across the country when it comes to housing affordability, job security & addiction.

I know that every country has its problems, but how friendly and accepting is Hamilton Ontario? Me as an African-American male and my girlfriend who is transgender Filipina, will we still be treated with the same respect and not being harassed. I'm not here to criticize any comments or troll in any way, I am just looking at areas in Ontario to live that we will be accepted without any harsh criticism by anyone in the area. Hamilton looks like such a beautiful area to live in and we just want to live simple lives.

I would suggest Toronto, Vaughan, Newmarket, Caledon, North York and Whitby. Any place as close to Toronto would be good. Racism gets worse the farther away from the city you go. DO NOT GO TO THUNDER BAY!!! At one point they were rated the hate capital

I’m in Hamilton, and I don’t see that it would be a problem. We are a very diverse city. I have friends of all ethnicities and friends and family who are LGBTQ as do most of the people I know.

@@73cidalia please don't take this as a personal attack on Hamilton Ontario, my girlfriend and I are just looking for a safe area. I know that not everyone in Hamilton is not racially biased or transphobic but you can't account for everyone, because it's not visibly shown doesn't mean it's not there. Take the state that I living in currently, I live in Texas USA and there are quite a few racially biased people as well as a few Sundown towns which one or two I believe are still active in that practice. I heard positives and negatives about Hamilton and the positive seem to outweigh the negatives, but I just want to be 100% positive that it is safe before adding it into a composed list of safer places in Canada.

I did touch on it briefly & covered it more in the Downtown Hamilton video. Unfortunately, there are a lot of Landlords who do not understand their legal requirements when renting spaces out. It also breaks my heart to see so many displaced by the gentrification of the City. Housing is an issue for all walks of life, just some are more disproportionately affected 🥺

The water is definitely improving & with the right people in power, it will continue to improve as the years go by. Unfortunately, there is a long way to go still to clean up the messes left in the past.

Interesting, nothing said about the epidemic of drug usage, homelessness, violence and tent suburbs set up in city parks. It has gotten so bad that middle class people are exiting the city; not to mention the lack of political will to preserve and maintain law and order, in regards to thefts and breakin

Sorry, you didn't catch the parts near the end of the video where I did talk about some of these things... Especially if you watched the Downtown Hamilton video, but I do appreciate you watching & taking the time to share your thoughts 🙏 But, while there are major socioeconomic issues in every large city in Canada, Hamilton Police have increased patrols downtown & have incorporated foot patrols to increase their presence with the hope of reducing opportunities for people & businesses to be affected by any crime spikes.

Every hill? Even the escarpment which was around when dinosaurs roamed the earth? While you're not wrong in that there are many decommissioned landfill sites in Hamilton (as there are in ALL cities), Hamilton spends a lot of money in projects to help protect the ecosystem from the negative effects. The older landfills are the biggest problem as they were used before we had a deeper understanding of the effects the chemicals & garbage could leech into the ground. I'm sure you were being facetious with your comment & know that not it was inaccurate, but I appreciate you taking the time to comment non-the-less 😊

Grew up there till i was 28. The Hamilton escarpment is a garbage trap. Drugs and prostitutes are a big problem. It a big city with a small town mentality. Meaning you always run into people you don't get along with. Taxes are high because the city run by the mafia. I recommend not moving to Hamilton. I live in Calgary now life better in Alberta. Houses are more affordable and jobs pay more. Blue collar folks can't afford to work and own a house in Hamilton.

Wouldn’t it be lovely if people didn’t see green space as their personal dumping ground or have the basic respect to not litter? Thankfully there are some wonderful citizens who volunteer their time to do large scale clean ups 🙌🏼 Those people are truly angels. Glad you’ve found somewhere you enjoy loving more, that’s the joy of this country - there are SO MANY different places you can put down roots! All the best out west!

Hamilton is known as steel-town so there's that 😊 Rent & affordability is a concern across Canada right now... while some areas are more reasonable than others, Hamilton is certainly feeling the pinch. The next election cycle is showing us that politicians are hearing the people & there are some ideas on the table. Only time will tell if it's really effective or not 🤞 Where is home for you in the states?

There are no benefits of amalgamation for any of the prior independent cities. Our taxes are used to sustain Hamilton and our property taxes have raised with no improvement in services. Our stupid city of Hamilton promoting the waterfalls because there is nothing else worthwhile has resulted in people who have lived in Hamilton all their lives can no longer go to these places due to all the people coming from outside of Hamilton. The parking lots are now full and you have to pay to use them. Go do a poll of who is using transit that will now cost us money on our property taxes so people can travel east to west 5 minutes quicker.

The tents in parks are almost all due to defiance. It's not a homeless/affordability issue in Hamilton that causes people to live in tents, it's a drug problem. All cities have issues with methamphetamine and fentanyl now. Call it what it is, not an affordability issue.

You are Totally wrong -it's a H-U-G-E afordability issue here. Rents have gone up over 110% in the past 2 years and all the COVID shut downs and no work didn't help. What once was $700 a month is now $1500+ and peoples hourly rates don't come close to a livable wage in keeping up with that increase. Yes we do have ppl with drug and mental problems BCuz the province started kicking ppl out of the mental hospitals years ago and forced them to govern themself which is ridiculous. Tent cities have become a larger population of regular working ppl just trying to survive. NOT drug users. I'm sick of peoples ignorance when it comes to this. The people in power are literally forcing people to live on the street bcuz they've no other choice. I've lived in this city almost 60yrs and have worked in the social work industry. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Compared to many U.S. cities and even a few others in Canada the crime rate is pretty low.

@@robertpearson8798 Huge crime rate for Canada. Just Canada and Canada's so-called standard, culture and level. It's It's its own country of course. However if Canada is to be compared to in terms of crime comparison, then the countries more aligned with Canada are those such as Australia, UK, sometimes Nordic countries.
