Good ideas expressed here..but i think it's easier for younger people to make friends in NYC than senior citizens..the older a person gets, the more invisible they become..that's my perception. One wants trustworthy , honest and reliable friends which take years to develop.. The best friends are those from childhood..nothing can replace them. I haven't had much luck making new friends and i've been living here for my whole life > 60 yrs.. I wish everyone good luck and welcome to NYC, friend.

hey man. I see you place "best friends" and "friends" in the same row. You can get a friend.. just don't go searching for the best friend that you had back in the days... And thats what i'm going to do travelling all the way from Norway.. To the worst place on earth to find a friend... Just because... what could go wrong?

Hi, this video really perked my interest as I met some new friends in New York when I was on holiday in 2013 - and some of them I'm still in touch with today. I was travelling solo and staying in a hotel (Roger Smith) on Lexington Ave. There were a couple of bars around the corner on 47th street (SNAFU and Connelly's) which catered for after-work crowds. Back then I smoked and smokers always chat when outside (kind of like being members of the same club) - anyway I got chatting to a stockbroker outside Connelly's who, after hearing my English accent, invited me to join him and go to another pub near Gramercy Park where he was meeting a friend and work colleague who was also English. Before heading down to Gramercy we had another beer in Connelly's - I got talking to one of the guys at the bar, Patrick, originally from the Bronx, who worked in Washington but was on secondment to the UN (which was nearby). I invited him to join us so the three of us headed down to Gramercy for a few drinks. We all swapped mobile numbers and met up a few times over the next few days. We're still in touch now. On the Saturday evening I went down to Greenwich village - I'd been walking around all day and was ready to head back to the hotel when fate stepped in and I found myself in front of a bar called GMT - an Englishman in New York outside a bar called GMT - I couldn't not go in. I got chatting to a girl, Evelyn, while we sat at the bar. She was waiting for her brother before heading to a party. When her brother, Ian, arrived they didn't rush off - instead they stayed with me for a while and we had a great time just having a laugh. After they left for their party I stuck around and got chatting with the DJ and the bouncer (who used to be a teacher) - both really friendly too. A short time later I got a call from Evelyn, they were heading to a fancy bar in the Time Warner building and invited me to join them there. I found the New Yorkers I met to be not wary or cynical or scared to talk to a stranger - the amazing vibe and sites and sounds of New York were fantastic but the people I met were even more so. Sorry for the long thread. TLDR: Don't be scared to talk to people - life is boring if you don't!

I moved here in January... *LOVE* this city!!! Plus, I’ve found it’s actually way easier to make friends here rather than the Midwest (where I came from) because people are so open and not usually too cliquey since a lot of people are coming and going (which may make the maintaining hard lol) one of my friends already moved back to London...but there are still lots of friends still here and more to make 🎉

Excellent video, Jon! As someone who also moved from Jersey 14 years back, that was definitely an advantage I had as well, though my Jersey friends started to fade away as the years went on. Of course, going to college in NYC helps too. #7 - roommates? Great point. Half of the roommates I've had have become super close friends of mine. #5 - shared interests. I've made two acquaintances of mine from actually going out to the Bell House in Brooklyn for 90s night. Yep, I used to go NUTS at 90s nights and hey, you meet people who also like to get down with Spice Girls and Nelly. #1 - JON! Come on, man! Get at it! I've done Zog for about ten years and still do it now (I'm 31). Many of my friends I've made through it have been a part of my main core group of friends. I highly recommend it and glad you put it as your #1 way!

I moved to NYC when I was 17 I lived there for 1 year. Let’s be honest, I was really social before NY and in NY it was really difficult for me to make friends. I did couple, but we were hanging out together once in two month. I had really bad depression because of it. I moved to Seattle year after because of the school. I learned a lot in New York and have 2 good friends there. I wish this video exist back to those days. Btw I moved by myself without my family

I am a kind of new in NYC. I think is kind of hard makes good friends for different reasons. 1. Most of the people have more than one job so, you have two jobs, I have two jobs, a coincidence in the schedule for hang out is hard for both. 2. The distances and commute times are huge so, let's suppose you finally could do something to avoid the point one. First, it is probably that reach a place to hang out, take you one hour, you will have a good time and go back to home will take you another hour and it is probably you have to work the next day so, it won´t be a good idea to reach home early in the morning, this time is if you take the train. If you take an Uber or taxi you must to add around $50 to your expenses of that night. 3. If you can avoid the last two points, probably you can not do this very continuously due to the costs that it means. So, I think that if you find someone through the options mentioned in the video. This people probably will be your friends for a short period of time or just for specific moments or activities. Based on the above I think that makes very true friends are not impossible but it is not easy in NYC. That is my personal experience. Maybe your experience is much better.

Sounds like New York is similar to other big cities around the world. I think you make some good suggestions. I've attended a number of Meetup gatherings both here in Australia and also in Vietnam. If you aim for a common interest group then I think that strategy is more successful. Good to see that New Yorkers are happy to chat at bars. It's not as easy here in Oz. My favorite bars are in Saigon where it's easy to meet travelers and ex pats and chat up pretty bar girls at bargain basement cost.

I actually went to a coffee shop called Stumptown to drink coffee and met a lot of really nice people there. My Ex-Girlfriend went to school on 8th street so I spent a lot of time at Stumptown. Stumptown is a block away from Washington square park on 8th Street. I also spent a lot of time there at Washington Square Park many people will come up and speak to you if you are alone.

I've lived in nyc all my life, and this list is good if you're an extrovert, but as i'm an introvert I would have a hard time with many of them. I would try to make friends in college in nyc and people just weren't interested in holding friendships. All my current friends are people I was friends with in high school and am happy with them though

25 y/o and I was raised in Queens. Social life in college was very challenging for me, and to this day I don't really speak with many of the friends that I made in college. as I have entered the workforce since then, it is still still challenging for me to develop close friendships with people because the people I meet have a very different vibe, some with better circumstances, some with worse circumstances, and few people hit me up regularly... ugh. I see young Manhattanites well-dressed who walk around with 5+ people in their friend groups and I want to be there too

Okay, yes, I hesitated writing about with my latest New York City experiences, but why ? I'm okay with it. I started out very early from Los Angeles on a 7:00am flight, the Thursday before Memorial Day, even when lightning hit the baggage route and it took nearly two hours to get my bag, I still had time to get to my Hotel, shower, and explore some that evening. That night was really, really fun. I did some bar hopping (Something I must be careful about in LA because of driving), the patrons and staff were friendly and social and somewhere around 3:00am, no one cared I was drunk and enjoying myself, I got smiles. I did my usual, customary, and wanting too of buying a discounted ticket the day of the show on Saturday afternoon. I saw 'The Cher Show'. I have never seen a bad Broadway play. The best, no, but certainly not bad. Then came Sunday, my last day in New York City for now. Qualifying always works for me. Everything is relative. What I am about to write may offend some people and / or invoke strong viewpoints and / or opinions of how I should have responded. Sunday afternoon, I went to bar I already know about in Hells Kitchen. I had two strong drinks. I didn't expect anything nor did anything extraordinary occur there. I head off to find the subway back to 32nd street. I ask a younger man where exactly the subway entrance is, I couldn't really see. Not unusual for New York City at all. He says I'll show you and walks across the street with me. He goes down the stairs with me. Shortly thereafter, he puts my hand on his erection in his pants. I politely say I'm not interested in sex at the moment, which I wasn't. To make a long story short, he didn't want to take no for an answer. He suggested some little corner somewhere, lol. Anyway, persistent yet, it was not violent in anyway. I hope he found someone in Hells Kitchen to help him out. Just wasn't me. No I didn't really think of going to the Police, sure, maybe he just wanted my wallet. He didn't go for it though .. Gawd I love New York City. ;-)

When I moved to NY I found the best way to make friends was to take a class - I took ballet, and then later yoga. Some health clubs allow you to join for a short period. It's so easy to talk to people after the class and maybe go for a coffee. A continuing class is better than a one-off because it allows friendships to develop slowly and to continue to grow. I also joined a writing workshop, and I've still got friends from that group.
