People that live in the desert often are interested in keeping the desert landscape. HOA's often keep the neighborhood looking like AZ. if you want a midwest looking green grass property...live in the midwest. Water is an issue, upkeep on a big green yard is expensive. Low maintenance desert landscape keeps AZ looking like AZ. Plus, doing yard work in 115 degrees....no thank you. Phoenix is a desert, expect a desert.
@LivinginPhoenixArizona

Yup!! My HOA requires the grass is green all year round. We have to plant winter and summer grass and keep it green. I’d prefer zero maintenance. And, I love Saguaros and desert landscaping. Not a huge fan of prickly pairs or ocotillos but there’s lots of options.

Amen, sister. Rolling green grassy hills have no place in AZ. If you want green, stay where you are. AZ is brown and desert. How does grass and non indigenous plants make for water conservation IN THE DESERT? -DUH!

A few more tips to add (from a many-decades-long resident): 1) Vehicle registration (tags) costs are tied to the value of your vehicle. I have a somewhat older little Hyundai and pay only $89/year. 2) Don't expect the amenities of high-density cities with major downtown skyscrapers. This city does not have a pedestrian-friendly downtown with shops, restaurants, etc. It has some good places downtown, but not very much. 3) This is Arizona. There is no socialized entertainment (except for the owners of sports teams) LOL. Don't expect free museums and festivals. You pay for everything ala carte here... and usually it ain't cheap. 4) Housing costs have gone WAY up, so make sure your employer will be paying you enough. Despite all of the Walmarts, this is a very hard place for low-wage workers... which is why there are so many Walmarts LOL. 5) 95% of the homes built here in the last 30 years are stucco, and the HOAs almost never allow a paint color that isn't some shade of dirt. Homes are dirt colored, ironically, so that they won't show the dirt - and there's a lot of dirt. If you plan to live here a long time, you had better REALLY like living in a dirt-colored home. 6) Most of the homes built in the last 30 years are not concrete block (as was the customary material before then); instead, the newer homes are made of a combination of styrofoam and chickenwire slathered with a thin veneer of concrete. Think unmovable two-story mobile homes with granite countertops. Several years ago, in the western suburbs, there was a rash of burglaries involving people breaking through walls... so at least lock the gate to your backyard so they'll have to break in through your front wall. 7) Watch your kids around the pool. Every year, there are several drownings and near drownings. It's always very sad. 8) Don't hike in the summer... not even in the early morning. Lots of people collapse on the trail because they underestimated the effects of the heat - and rescues can be very expensive. 9) If a sign says, "Do not cross," do not cross. Flash floods sweep a lot of vehicles away, and you'll pay through the nose for the rescue (as you should). 10) The vast majority of drivers consider speed limits to be suggestions, and many think red lights are suggestions, too. It comes from the proud Arizona tradition of "No government is going to tell ME what I can and cannot do!" Be prepared to pay high insurance premiums as a result.

I used to work for the Motor Vehicle Department here in Arizona and depending on the year, make and model of the vehicle determines the registration. My 2005 ford mustang cost me $24 a year. But a 2021-2022 Class A or Class B Motor Home will cost you a arm and a leg. A 2021-2022 $40,000 vehicle will cost you another arm but no leg. The order the vehicle the less you pay! Please explain everything before you freak out about pricing on registration. I love my Arizona and have lived here all my life. We welcome everyone but as long as you take care of this beautiful place. Thank you for the video. Keep up the hard work.

I lived in North Phoenix, the Deer Valley area for eight years and the first summer I was there thought I was going to die it was so hot, and I worked outside so that didn't help either. I moved to the valley from the East Coast, Pennsylvania to be exact and hated the hot humid summers and cold winters, so it was refreshing to move to a dry climate which I loved. My wife and I moved back to the East Coast, only to Virginia because of my job, but am hoping to move back to Arizona someday, I do miss it.

What is it about being from the east coast and being difficult to leave? It feels like most east coast born and raised people can never move to the west or Midwest, it’s mainly down south. I’m in NJ and thinking about taking my family to North Carolina just to get out of jersey and see something different for once.

My wife and I transferred to AZ in 94', a lot of people think Phoenix is the only town. But living in Arizona, you can go from alpine forest to cactus it's all about "elevation, elevation, elevation." Pick the climate you want and move to it. You like 40 degrees on a summer night, we got you covered. You like 60 degrees in January; we got that, too.

Peoria has Basis Charter, a top school in the country K-12. When hiking never let young children lead the hike. The roofs on houses are 100 year cement tiles. Taxes are very low on houses. There are two pipes sticking out of the side of your house for the AC. When AC is running, if the bottom pipe is not dripping and the top pipe is dripping, the bottom pipe is clogged and you need to get that fixed immediately.

You will deal with oven-like heat, Valley Fever, and scorpions infestations in many homes. Gilbert is a lovely, well landscaped city with great city planning and I highly recommend it. Definitely make sure your home is NOT in a scorpion nest area. I tried everything including "sealing" my house against them and couldn't get rid of them, had to sell.

I asked him why is that, He said we call that the scorpion house nobody nobody has been able to stay in it, We threw the rocks we sprayed I had men come in and dust the outlets Literally we used everything under the sun, The 1st day my grandkids went on a hunt outside and found 19, I lasted 2 years they raced my rent up $300 more and I was gone ! Sad thing is most landlords won't be sincere if they won't tell you the truth they won't say yes we have a scorpion problem on top of that I had golfers Literally digging huge holes in my backyard, The last week when I was moving I caught something out of the corner of my eye and it was the largest scorpion when I turned inside I GAS PED ! Easily it was as long as long as my wrist down to my finger tip largest one I've ever seen

AZ has personal property tax on vehicles, which is becoming common, unfortunately. It sounds like they include it in their auto registration process. Some states separate it and require a yearly vehicle property tax, and are as high as 4% (VA). This can be a massive hidden cost in moving to what might otherwise seem like a cheap state to live in. The highest states charge 2-4%, annually. On a $40,000 vehicle, that could be easily $1,500 annually. Right there you just ate up your other property tax or income tax savings.

@@nadenegarcia9125 Maybe we are able to say it is "overcrowded" because of the people who are actually moving here. We have scorpions here in Georgia and copperhead snakes just to name a few creepy crawlers and gets really hot and the humidity is year around extremely hot during the months of May through August. Even though Georgia is considered a Sunbelt state the upper half of the state the weather is very fickle where as the lower half is more of the sunbelt. Make sure your kids stay hydrated to the MAX and slather them in sunscreen i the summer. My mom made me come in every hour and a half to drink water in the summer and she made me wear under armor type long sleeve stuff and a hat that covered my neck and sunglasses. SRP is the better company...avoid anywhere that APS is the only choice, they’ll gouge you to death. Yes rent is high not dog friendly because idiots don't protect their pets in the heat. You'll want to leave them at home where they're more comfortable.

We had a new home built out in Queen Creek and most of the neighborhoods built in the last 2 years have fiber from CenturyLink. $65/month for unlimited 940Mbps up and down. Best internet I've ever had. Pair it with KZfaqTV and you get it all for around $130 a month.

My fiancé and I are thinking about moving from Jersey but my question is how do Chefs and Bartenders do out by you? We’re looking in the Surprise area… NJs outrageous right now for buying or renting… Here we make it work with paying a little over 2k for a 1bd rental 😩. It seems like it’s decently cheaper out by you but I don’t know the wage comparison with our current jobs?

Phoenix/Scottsdale has a HUGE tourist industry which means a lot of restaurants and bars (chefs and bartenders). How much you make will depend on where you work and as far as buying, it will depend on how much you claim as income (ie. pay taxes on). Surprise itself is not an area I would say is good for max income as bartender/chef.

Hi, when you said that there are people over 70 years of age who.look 50 I understood you; there's a tribe in Kenya called Akamba, they dont grow old. Their county is so hot and dry, and we have been wondering why. I believe that the hot weather is better for me than the cooler weather, because I've seen it elsewhere. I love Arizona, I'm on my way, and I have no apologies.

The 7-8 months that have "favorable" weather? Puulleeassee. Check the charts. It will hit a 100 degree plus 6 months out of the year. If it was favorable weather even 7 months out of the year, I would have never left. Well, technically I left for career-growth reasons, but that's beside the point.

@@ErichBSmith what app are you looking at? 😅 Today is October 6th, but next week has a high of 90F too. And if you're hiking in the morning, it's in the low 70s. Evenings are also a very pleasant 80F but ladies will need a light sweater if you sit on the patio. We have clients in from Oregon right now saying this is DREAM weather cuz it's cold and raining there. Another couple from Oahu are loving the outdoor choices, moving here in May when their house is finished. Some people love living in long sleeves and pants all fall, winter and spring long. It's hunting season right now up north and it's down right chilly. There is always the weekend get-aways, I am heading to Prescott Valley myself (also chilly). There will always be nay-sayers and that's a good thing cuz everyone can't live in Arizona. By the way... have you ever lived in Phoenix? Where do you live now?

How’s traffic? Especially commuting from one of the suburbs into town for work

Not the worst for metro cities but any traffic stresses me out! We always recommend that people live within 35 minutes of their place of employment (called a commuter shed). Phoenix did NOT make the ranking list of the worst traffic cities, YAYYY! Of the 10 worst cities in the world, 4 are in the US: 2nd Place: Chicago, IL - 155 hours lost 4th Place: Boston, MA - 134 hours lost 5th Place: New York City, NY - 117 hours lost 8th Place: Philadelphia, PA - 114 hours lost 9th Place: Miami, FL - 105 hours lost
