💰Living In VIETNAM on $4.06 per DAY!? 😲🇻🇳 | Travel Vietnam | Vietnam Travel Vlog (Ep. 25)

Would you believe it if I told you that I was living on $4.06 per day in rural Vietnam?! Well, I'm dead serious.
Now, keep in mind, I wasn't living like a king - but, I sure wasn't living terribly, either.
They key is to live like a local. I rented an apartment in the countryside, ate at a restaurant every day, and shopped at the grocery store. And STILL, I was spending less than US $5 per day.
Keep in mind, to do this, you can't really backpack Vietnam. This is the cost of living in Vietnam like a local, and not like a backpacker (which I am).
But sometimes, I needed a break, and settled down for a bit of relaxation.
It's also important to note that I could have gotten the cost down even further if I didn't buy water and food at the grocery store. If I went to cheap restaurants every day, I could have lowered the cost per day even more!
This particular video was shot in Cao Lanh. But, this target budges could be achieved anywhere in the countryside. This prices are not specific to this area. Rural Vietnam is cheaper!

Thanks for the video . I’ve been to Vietnam 5 times and will retire there in 2 years. My wife and 2 daughters live in HCMC . The video brought back lots of great memories of when my wife and I stayed in their family house in Quang Ngai, while waiting for our marriage certificate. It took me a couple of days to get used to the huge insects , flying cockroaches, squat toilets , etc. But as I look back , I was the happiest I’ve ever been in my life . Peace of mind , no stress , I ate fresh , quality, and delicious foods . The countryside blew me away ! So beautiful and relaxing

I believe you when you say the mosquitos are efficient... Went to visit my grandparents in Vietnam and didn't have a computer so I went to a gaming cafe. Walked back home after and found 3+ mosquito bites on my legs. It's like they can smell foreign blood because everyone in VN was fine but me. Lmao

Mountain apple!! The fruit! I usually don’t care for them either! It Leaves a dry feeling in your mouth too! However, here in Hawaii there is a hiking trail that I like that has the best mountain apple fruits. So sweet and juicy. The best I’ve ever had. 😃 thanks for making these videos!

You travelled from Tay Ninh to Cao Lanh ? Yes , she might have made up the price for your bike :-) Usually carried underneath the bus . I would not have sat like that for 2 hours . You were on the outskirts of town , though it is still a small city . Hope you get to see the cultural centre there ? Was so interesting . Was there for Tet . And knowing a little of the language helps . need to brush up on your 'bargaining ' skills . Nice video .

I'm a Vietnamese American and tbh I really liked the wet bathrooms. Sure, you can get it dirty while walking in and out, but to clean one is also SO much easier than western bathrooms.

would like to know how to pick a town to go to because i'm thinking about trying this for fun. How did you choose yours and I couldn't understand the name. You used to be able to live in coastal town of sianoukville cambodia for $5 or 6/day but the chinese moved in and built a gazillion casinos. So all the westerners moved out, since the rent skyrocketed and all of their cheap bars were torn down to build resorts.

- just bring your debit card and withdraw money from your bank account. there is a fee in both your home country and the local country..

Thanks for the basic info. I am wondering how long can you stay there before you have to renew the visa. If you wish to live there long term do you have to vacate that country for a certain time and then return with a renewed Visa? You are looking at quite a lot of flights and also medical insurance whatever you do. I will look into it all myself. It seems having a half year at home earning some extra money and returning to holiday there for the rest of the year during the best part of the season is probably the best way to go. Respectful to all. You can catch up with good medical care and dental and eye health at home and enjoy the best of your country of choice while staying fit and well as you age. Am I wrong.

I'm a Vietnamese American. I came to the US when I was a toddler. This is super interesting to me, as I see the world mostly through very western 1st world country colored glasses. However, I do remember a tiny bit about life there. Very interesting. Btw, I love that fruit. Tasted like watered down Apple flavored moist cotton.

The S&P 500 gains 6% per year. 4$/day * 365 day/yr = 1460$/yr. 1460 / 0.06 = 24,333$. If you save up 25,000$ you can retire in Vietnam with that lifestyle. (Although maybe inflation is going to catch up to you one of these days...).

Harrison - I have read where westerners are not allowed to do work in these countries - that you must always hire a local or the relatives of the woman you are living off. Apparently you are not even encouraged to load up a sofa and bring it back to your apartment, instead you must pay a local to do that. Also, IF you can afford a car, you should not pick up friends from the Airport, instead you are supposed to hire a taxi or relative of those you stay with, or local to pick them up. Most Westerners seem to make their money doing ONLINE business, or officially teaching English in schools, not by taking jobs away from locals. If you transgress either they, or gossipy other expats will dob you in. Look into everything before risking your precious tools being left somewhere. Regards.

@@judithsmith8014 - the concept of hiring locals and keeping money within their country is very common outside of the G20 countries. In Dominican republic their government will not exchange their currency 'passo' back to US dollars, their way of retaining US dollars within their country. As for Vietnam, I have to bring my tools to complete major projects I have planed. Locals can only assist with none skilled labour and tools in Vietnam are pretty much garbage. I understand the country wants to grow and keep its labor force busy, but without high level skilled persons, it's pretty much useless not to mention giving directions in Vietnamese.

- Yes. generally, people in Vietnam eat alot of meat. finding people who are vegan is not generally normal. I didn't need a couple of vegetarians, and I did eat that a couple of different vegetarian restaurants. it is possible... you will just have to ask local people where the nearest location is and they will probably know

- Unfortunately, there were so many scams and so much cheating. By FAR more than any other Asian country I have visited. In addition, it was difficult to speak with Cambodian locals because of their lack of interest in tourists. I travel for people...so this wasn't my favorite place :/

@@grantperkins368 So glad you mentioned this subject. Yes - I have worked in an Australian abattoir and the animals are treated humanely and dispatched quickly and cleanly. Of course they have been grown and sent there to be killed for food so I see no cruelty in that particular practice that mankind has done for thousands of years. Animals out in the wild suffer far more trauma than farm animals from numerous parasites and irritating flies causing bad eye problems, horrible injuries, disease and seasonal starvation along with general ill health that no farmer allows his animals to go through. I have loved and ridden horses for years, also loved many cats and dogs as pets, so could not bear watching mindless cruelty to any animal so that cancels me out from visiting such societies - call me a wimp, and criticize Western Culture all you wish but I like decency and people with a conscience. So that is what I am used to and I'm only commenting on the treatment of animals let alone children and young girls. Each to their own, I am not into telling others how to live and I know what sights I can bear. Enjoy your experiences as I enjoy the wonderful experiences I have here and welcome back when your time comes. Regards.

Not quite yet. I think I'm just going to save a little more and try to just figure it out after arrival. I think I plan on paying for six months at once when I do find something I for sure like. I do know I would prefer something outside of tourist areas maybe on the edges of the city.

Edges of Earth: You don't look as perky in this video as the last one you did about Vietnam from the U.S.. What happened? Is it because of the unfamiliar environment of Vietnam that cranked up your survival faculties at the maximum? Being on the "edges of the earth" constantly may wear you out, man. You need to return home to relax and get yourself recharged from time to time!
