Living Off Grid: Hoss Garden Seeder

Have you ever wanted perfect looking row crops? I like uniformity. Some people don't but we do. Today we are going to put together the Hoss Garden Seeder and take a look at it's construction in order to use it for our upcoming sorghum planting this summer.

Knoww this video is 7 years old, but will add a comment. Just finished the third season with the Hoss planter. Has always done a good job for me. Sell 400 to 500lbs of beets each year, this makes planting so simple.

I have had a cheap plastic version for 40 yrs and it works great!!! I do use an old curtain rod for a side rigger kind of thing to measure my rows, so if first row is straight just follow the row with the rod to make the next row straight!

Hello Zach, We have used the same Garden Way Planter for 30+ and have had tremendous results. I had to replace some plates about 10 years ago but that was because of misplacing the plates during shipping. Nothing else has worn out even on a 10+ acre vegetable farm. I have never even heard of the Hoss but it appears well constructed. This year is the sabbatical year and we have not planted but our volunteer growth is unbelievable. Next year, Yah willing, we will experiment with the Hoss. JJ

I've been looking at Hoss Tools for over a year but couldn't process the value in my mind. Thanks for splainin how this particular tool is used. Want one.

Purely unsolicited response here but I'm a long time Hoss user and love their stuff. These are investments designed to last you a lifetime. If you have a problem or concern, call them and talk it over and they'll work it out. I did that very thing concerning some heavy duty cultivator teeth. They MADE me a set, by welding heavy wire into the hollow back cavity of each tooth, and sent them right out at no extra charge. Very good customer service! I have a double wheel hoe, spreader bar, sweeps, stirrup hoes (oscillating hoes) in all sizes, plow set and numerous cultivator teeth. Also have a seeder attachment for the wheel hoe, not the dedicated seeder as shown here. I work my stuff hard and have for years without any failures. This implement is designed for ground that HAS BEEN WORKED! Do not expect to break ground and rip roots with it (although I have). It's not designed for that and they make that clear.

Sorghum seed make great chicken feed. My Dad planted three acres. I remembered chopping the tops and striping the levies off about two weeks before we cut down the cane. My Dad made a swisher with two rolled off a ringer washer.

I love you video, I'm a 66 year old retire long haul truck driver but my wife is in a wheelchair so we sold our 24 acres homestead so I can take care of my wife. We both love homestead video so be safe out there. Safety on the homestead is #ONE.

I have personally met the Boss owner at the Mother Earth News (MEN) Fair. Good people and nicely built product. Yes they are pricey, and rocky soil makes their use difficult. I have many many old wheel hoes, and two Earthway seeders...all bought used for cheap...I can't justify the use for my rocky ground, at least in the larger 3 acre field. in the 1200 sq ft vegetable garden the old ones work fine. If your not super handy finding deals and modification of things get the Hoss.

It looks like your field will really need to be prepped very flat for this to work. Are you going to have to do more prep on the plot than normal?

It's plastic.not even fiber reinforced (think power tools) Just plastic. Like what your kids Legos are made of. Had the hoss seeder. Sold it and bought an earth way. The hood seeder also does not work well for any seeds that are not round. Like corn, cucumber squash. For all my complaints with the earth way, I can't justify the Jang seeder.

2 things the plate looks flimsy, and the seed hopper cover looks cheap. how were the results?

Seen this last year on the Web Cajun channel. This is a very nice planter but a little out of my price range.

Hoss does make a seeder attachment for the wheel hoes. It retails for about $170 and does a great job! I use mine regularly. Just planted a second crop of peas, 6 rows 30' long each. Took me longer to attach the seeder and load the seed than it did to plant. If your seedbed is well prepared you can really go with it! These are fine tools and I look at them as lifetime investments! This ain't hobby gardening stuff, it's built to last! Made in America too, and they are fine folks to deal with.

LOL, The seed he put in the planter most was too big and stopped up the holes it skipped every seed after that... I also like how he did the video without even using the seeder in the garden... I see lots of videos like this one... Hell if it works as they say it will PROVE IT... The first Hoss Seeder was Garbage...
