to prevent the hemi thick i use the MoS2 additive in the engine oil, the issue comes on long idle because of a low oil pressure. the additive creates a slippery film and should prevent the issue. Till now no problems (175000km-103000miles +/-)

We love our 2011 210k miles no major issues yet all modern trucks with cylinder deactivation have lifter issues so kinda have to live with it and plan around it

The mds issues for me were very minor, my trans started doing a weird vibration around 45mph so I got it rebuilt & it was just one of those things where I didn’t really need the truck asap so I decided to rebuild the engine as preventative maintenance. For me the mds issues really only caused a little hesitation in it. But it sounds like you also got your moneys worth out of it.

Hi autoshop It never ceases to amaze me how Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/ Ram owners say a lot negative stuff about their vehicles but you are a classic example of very good maintenance can make all these Mopars go over 200k miles with very minor or no issues. Mercedes, and most European makes and as well as Ford and GM, have much worse issues than Mopar, yet Mopar gets ragged on all the time but from what I see, at the place i live in Southern Ontario, Canada, and this is an area where they use a lot of salt during the winters, the most common 10 years or older vehicles are, Toyota, Honda and Mopar and Mazda comes in a close 4th. I rarely see 10 year old GM'S, except their pick up trucks and the Impala, Lucerne, Lesabre and Park Avenues; On the Ford side, I see their F series pick up trucks, The Lincoln Town Car, Crown Vic and Grand Marquis and last but not least, the Mustang. All other GM'S and Fords that are over 10 years old are barely in existence today!

Regarding the transmission how often did you do flushes and filter changes?
@aaronsautoshop1991

I was slacking on the transmission maintenance which is probably why it was an issue for me, I think I serviced it every 100k miles or so but since 250k miles, I do the fluid & filter change every 30k miles or so

I’m looking at a 2013 Tradesman Crew 4x4 with the Hemi. $13k, 181k miles. I’m not mechanically inclined (I can change oil, fluids, etc.). Is this thing going to be a maintenance nightmare for me? I’m coming from GM, so I’m used to “issues” there, but they’re known issues and I have a clue how to fix many of them. Dodge/Ram soured me a long time ago when my 97 1500 crapped its transmission 400 miles from home with my 6month old in a car seat with us.

Honestly I would just service all the fluids, for me the biggest hemi “issue for maintenance is spark plugs & valve covers. But I would see if the cam/mds system has been addressed already as well because that could be a large expense. Once it’s over that hurdle they’re pretty good & just need basic maintenance. I’m currently at 347k miles with my 2012

@@aaronsautoshop1991 Thanks. Getting this from a used lot, so there’s no way to know if it’s been done. Carfax doesn’t show anything like that. Does show regular dealership maintenance history though.

The only ways to really tell would be to take the intake manifold & see if the mds plugs are still intact or if it has a tuner on it but chances are it might not have been done. But worst case figure on an engine rebuild but after that it’ll probably be one of the best trucks you’ve ever had

@@aaronsautoshop1991 Good info! No tuner/chip. Does have a muffler delete cause this beast is LOUD - which honestly might be the "no go" on buying it in the first place (wife said no way in hell we'd be taking trips in it with it that loud). Also, I'm not 16 y/o anymore, I don't want a super loud truck. LOL Don't really want to think about an engine rebuild. $$ is tight these days. Kid is getting married in October - that's the $$ priority right now. May just keep piddling with my Tahoe until after the wedding then look and see what's out there.

@aaronsautoshop1991

For the pre 2014 models it’s recommended every 30k miles, but also it’s smart to do the valve cover gaskets at the same time, as there are figure 8 gaskets around your spark plugs, they tend to end up leaking & dripping oil down into the plugs which can foul out the new spark plugs as well.

It varies... Most do it when it starts to run rough, even at that some replace a single plug/coil that's misfiring, if you get codes. Just did the first plug change on my Dakota at 122k, every 30k miles seems excessive... mine starter to run rough around 118k Though with a Hemi and last gen Dakotas that's 16 plugs and 8 dual coil packs, rather than 8 and 8 single coils. Budget accordingly
