I’m a 62 year old man and I’ve had a stammer all my life. It takes real guts to go so public Gareth and I have mammoth respect for you. My stammer is not so bad these days as I have learnt ways around it such as stringing words together or not starting a sentence with a pronunciation where I know I’ll get stuck. I too got bullied but by my family. I was never bullied at school thankfully. My life became a living hell and I contemplated suicide at 10 years old. As a result I now have PTSD. Your video sends a lot of strength to other stammerers. You are one awesome man. RESPECT. 👍

I have lived with my stammer for many years and couldn't explain it as well as this. I now work with other children and will share this for the others who work with me so they understand. Other disabilities are so well understood and seeing is not understood as if we are 'putting it on'. I'm glad you have gained strength in who you are. Be strong and keep these blogs coming

My hero always, I have a condition called selective mutism where I physically can’t speak in situations I’m scared or anxious in along with my autism, I’ve been bullied my whole life have severe mental health and your the reason I fight everyday I love you Gareth xxx

Gareth, this blog brought a lump in my throat! You have done so amazing. Yeah fair you’ve been on a bit of a rollercoaster but this video just proves how strong you are and seemingly always have been. I have mental health and have dyspraxia and got bullied badly too. Always told I’m stupid and wouldn’t achieve anything. (I’m now 30 and don’t work as little self belief). Was actually you that pulled me through. This video is so touching. Keep being amazing. That 'creeping death' stayed with me and still does when at work in meetings where I have to introduce myself. No wonder I have anxiety issues. Teachers weren't great at school, mostly due to ignorance of how to deal with someone with a stammer. I didn't need challenged or tested by being put on the spot. I needed to speak when I felt comfortable. It does get easier as you get older as you can be a bit more in control of your situation plus I'm more likely to call people out for making comments about how I speak. Interesting vlog, thanks.

I was just playing a few old songs from the 90s and your name sprung to mind and straight away tapped on this video. I just want to say that you are very brave to be talking about your stammer in front of your fans and others that have the same issue. It's a great encouragement! So good on you! :)

The feeling when you wanna get involved in the conversation but your hesitant that you may stammer so i decide to stay quiet. Most people think I’m shy and awkward but don’t know the metal battle I’m having with every sentence that comes to mind. This lack of confidence just comes from previous Incidents when I have stammered infront of someone. I just feel so bad , I’d rather just stay alone these days

I stammered a lot between the ages of 9 and 18. Fear would gripped me especially when I became conscious of the words and phrases which I knew I would not be able to say out. Some say the stammerer does do so when he speaks out loud to himself/herself, or talks to animals or when two stammerers speak out or read out together. I don't know how far this is true. I was healed of this impediment in a Reinhart Bonnke meeting in 1984. However my heart still goes out to those who can't express themselves and it breaks my heart because a part of me hurts knowing what they are feeling inside. Anyway even in the Bible, Moses, a great hero himself was a stammerer and he was nonetheless a great leader. I just hope this sharing has helped somebody. Cheers. 😊

i was bulled from year 7 till year 11 when i was in school because i was shy couldnt answer questions when teacher asked.. my life was so bad when i was in school im 30 years old now and still not confortant going places meeting new people still hard for me... but Gareth u have been my hero from a very young age xx

I hope you see this comment and know it’s possibly to overcome a stammer. I did mine earlier this year thanks to a book, How to Stop Stuttering and Love Speaking by Lee Lovett. It’s the best book I’ve ever read and his WSSA program is equally fantastic.

Love you always. I was bullied in school too and couldnt speak in front of the class, i stutter when nervous my fiancee finds it cute. I ended up not attending school during any lessons where i knew there was a task of speaking in front of class. Right from that first moment you walked in on pop idol, you had my support. You signed my pop idol tshirt that had your image on it. Will try find the picture of me wearing it. XX

I have stammering problem from 13 to 15 years i use some tricks some times like speaking in whispering to laud and which words i can speak well i say that in normal way and people think I'm weird but it works for me sometimes and i didn't find any cure for this problem or disease i feel very embarrassing in front of my Friends and relatives when they are talking & ask me questions and can't reply them very well and they just laugh instead of giving me any solution.i also lost my job because of this and when i meet someone i have things in my mind which i want to say but i can't really say that and they just keep talking and my reply is just "hmm" and now i just stop meeting people and i spend most of my time in my room,, even my family is not supporting or helping me to get out of this problem.i also can't apply to any job bcuz most jobs requires good communication skills and i don't have these and I'm very depressed now if someone have any solution for this i really appreciate that or i just have to wait to get old😑

Hi Gareth, my son has just turned 18, he has had a stammer since he was 5. At school he was quiet, and his stammer has affected his social confidence. He spent many lunch breaks on his own. He is happy within his family network. I've approached a speech therapist, and they seem to be going down the road of acceptance rather than treatment, would you recommend any particular treatment or therapy? I've not heard you speak in years and how you speak now is incredible. My son James isn't too keen on treatment, he just accepts it, but i don't know whether to push for him to get treatment to help him as he goes through his adult life. Sorry for the long story! My grandsons best friend has a stammer. They are 10/11. He's just come to call for my grandson, I've just asked him if he knew you, he said no. I said look you up. ❤️

I note that you mentioned that you can’t get the thoughts out fast enough. And yet stuttering “cures” often involve talking slowly. And don’t get me started on dealing with teachers.
