I have been living in a van for over one year with no roof vent. Do not get this twisted I am not promoting no ventilation i just think if money is a factor that this is one stress you don't need to worry about at the beginning. You can add these things as you go. Open your doors and windows. Its free ventilation. Add the roof vent later when the money is available. #vanlife #vanbuild

Everybody else needs to look at truck drivers there are no roof vents in big rigs they just have little windows and I hardly ever open any of my windows and I have never had any issues with mold in 10 years

The fear of mold from vehicle dwellers gets a little crazy sometimes. I’ve been living and traveling in vehicles on and off for almost 6 years and never had a roof fan and never had mold or condensation issues.

I've just recovered from a horrific black mold issue under my mattress in my wagon. I do believe it was due to the MDF though as it was very old and can't be treated. I was trapped in my car almost 24/7 with no chance of airing out anything as I received almost non stop rain for a month this winter. Have now replaced with treated plywood and insulating as much as possible... But mold definitely does happen! Even a cheap vent fan system will do the trick! I'm considering adding some small ones either on the side of the car or on top to keep circulation just hard to find ones on a budget that are waterproof. As I mainly need ventilation when it's raining obviously..

Hay Chrome, I drive a Big Truck (Tractor Trailer) now for 21yr ( so I guess I’m a professional Nomad) and I live in my truck year round, and I never never get mold,Now in the summer my front windows will frost over ( I have the AC cranking) so your exactly right if you have good ventilation No need for a roof vent. A lot of the whole van dwelling ideas came from truckers,or trucking, some of us are out for months at a time.so we’ve had no choice, but too figure it out.

I used horse float pop up vents with 80mm computer fans that can be reversed to keep my van more stealth. I have used the van without vents when I first got it but wouldn't live without them now. I think it's more of a necessity than a luxury in Australia but it does get a little hot down here. Love your work regards Sully.

Another great video, Chrome! I like the idea of pop out windows on the back of the van; when you get it done, please run a video on it. Here in Charlotte, North Carolina in the USA, I purchase dehumidifying 18 oz. Zarpax towels-they really work, are washable, and you can get them on amazon. Two Zarpax 18 oz dehumidying “towels” will do a whole van to the point where you won’t even have a foggy front window!

I’ve not experienced the winter yet, but my Fantastic Fan roof vent, for US$160, has been great for keeping the temperature down during the summer. When it’s over 100°F(38°C) inside without it, that’s important. At night, I can open one of my rear pop-out windows while the vent fan runs to direct air right to where I’m sleeping. It works and feels great. There are other ways to get a similar effect, but I’m sure glad that I have it.

I probably could have used one in the summer when it was super hot , im planning on putting pop out windows in this spring as well and see if thats enough to get a good air flow . I'm more concerned at this point on getting insulation in now that it is getting pretty cold where i live . For sure a on going project living in a van , but wouldnt want it any other way !

Grear advice Chrome. Everything in its's time, so I've heard said. Opening the doors while you experience breathtaking views, is a great was to expel moisture. Also leave beds unmade for a while when you get up so that the moisture from body heat all night, can escape. Have a gtreat week. Loving the vlogs.

New subscriber here and enjoying your videos. This particular one hit home, and caused me to stop and take a step back. We just purchased a NV2500 a few weeks ago, so we are in the planning stages for our home. Hubby’s been a trucker for 17 years and has his ideas about how to go about this inexpensively, but I was getting caught up in all the other videos of people telling others what you need in your van. Just like kids ignore what their parents try to tell them, I guess I had to hear it from someone else to believe it. Going to do some rethinking on how to go about this and use some common sense. Thanks for all you do, and being willing to go against the grain.

I wish I had some sage advice, but I don't. I sealed off the vent/fan in my camper. My son sealed all his as he spent 2 years living in his camper, and he is still alive. The only place I've had mold was in my house in NE Saskatchewan, so for 4 winters I left two windows open a crack and you know those temperatures -35 wind and lots of fresh air!!

The flex seal type stuff on the roof is the first, I think I'll try it on the ribs as well. Watching you taking it slow and easy reminded me I can do the same, lol. You are correct it is airflow that is the key to keeping out moisture and mold .I put a six inch round screened air vent in the front corner of my box truck in the floor a year and a half ago and what a difference that has made .All the cool air from under the truck when it parks just pours in and there are enough air gaps in the roll up door when closed to make good air flow.I am not a big fan of roof vents either .

Hey Chrome. Avid watcher and fellow van dweller from Minnesota here. I agree, you don't need a roof vent in your van. But I would also like to add that when it's 85° F out, it's nice to have one ! I had a much more comfortable summer sleeping in my van with the addition of the roof vent. The downside is that you also lose about 7°F in insulation power in the colder months. So it's a give and take.

I was relieved because I already have pop-out windows. I would love not to have to get a battery or a fan. Now I need to figure out how to put bug screens on the pop-out windows. Maybe with magnets on the interior?
