As a Muslim who considered conversion to Judaism at some point in time, I completely relate with this story, though I'm far for having gone through manipulation in my childhood. However, I can say that the fact that I found I could secretly be a Jew without having to be an official one has some advantages. Having gone through a life full of things I kept for myself, it was really liberating to make Judaism the lid of my inner secrets. When I finally learned how to daven, I know that my fate is tied to Jews even though I'm not openly a Jew and I kind of find it like having the Nefesh of a Ger and teaching my fellow Muslims what it's like to be a Jew, without having to be considered a stranger. I kind of find it more important now that I am openly Muslim and secretly a Jew in order to pull my Muslim surroundings more towards Judaism. My point is, if I have to go through the same path again, I want to make sure that I will always head towards Judaism, so if I keep at being a Judaist rather than jump to Judaism, the path will be better drawn for me to find it again: taking the plane to Jewish spiritual territory through conversion wouldn't help me build a path that would always lead to my Jewish root.

We all have a place in Olam Ha-Ba if we do our best amigo! I hope if you decide to make that step one day you will find yourself right at home! In the meantime that sounds like a noble aspiration. You dont have to be a full on Rabbinical Orthodox Jew to learn and keep Torah in your heart or to follow G-d. My own background is complex. I am twice exiled. My fathers fathers were Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And my mothers mother was A’taentsik of the American Wendat-Huron people. Both of these people groups now exist as diasporic communities. Twice exiled. I grew up so far removed from Judaism or organized religion that I didn't even know the connection until I was in my 20s. I used to identify as a witch even. I was that far off. Eventually I learned of my surnames converso origins in Iberia and started to put the pieces of a smashed picture together one at a time. My spiritual connection with Torah from childhood with no instruction, constantly being identified by others as Jewish oddly enough, as well as a constant and natural inclination to daven from my earliest memories. TMI but I am also the only one of my 7 half brothers who is circumcised. My mother just "felt like" she needed to consecrate her first son for some reason. Hashem took my father when I was small. But He always held me close in my fathers stead. And so all that and more in mind I pursued conversion. Some Rabbis have said I am effectively a Jew without a beit din. And of course the consensus and Chief Rabbinate would require it. But at the end of days we are all but men and we know not Hashems perfect vision. To pretend we do for even a second would be folly. The road to Zion has showed me my purpose, and that is to gather the other lost sons of Sepherad. We BOTH have our place in the ingathering of the exiles, and I wish you fortune, and that G-d may bless your path!

I had the same feeling about him. He said he does have Jewish roots. I have a similar story of always feeling at home around Judaism and being drawn to it although I live on the other side of the world from him. I found out later that I have family who refused to convert in Italy and the survivors fled but became Christian after years of marrying into Christian families but at the same time never renounced Judaism, just forget/became distracted with fitting in to society. Some of my ancestors were early Kabalists.
