This will be the first year that we are gardening on our farm property instead of at the homestead. Will this new garden do well? Only time will tell.

***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

Might try a root rake for those rock's. Rake them into a pile in the middle of the garden. We use that here for multiple things.
@valeriestevens5250
@valeriestevens5250 2 жыл бұрын
That would help remove the rocks, especially since they will probably "grow" with the heaving of the soil. Another way to build humus in the soil is to cover crop. Maybe have a second garden area of the same size that is cover cropped all year then tilled in and planted for next summer while cover cropping the first area for the following year. Alternating them each year would help keep diseases from building up and also help build up the soil faster than just adding the amendments. I know Sarah has said that Missouri has super weeds, but there are cover crops (buckwheat and cow peas come to mind) that are supposed to grow so fast they choke out the weeds. Something to consider anyway.

Growing celery from seed... Surface sow your seeds fairly thick in seed starting mix. Keep the seeds moist until germinated. Let them grow as a bunch until they are small seedlings. Then tease them apart and transplant into small starter pots of good potting soil. Celery needs lots of water, so don't let them dry out. Once they're big enough to handle themselves in the garden, transplant them outside. Good luck!

We had one of the worse wind storms I've ever seen come through here in western Minnesota on Thursday. I didn't have much damage just a few tree branches but one of my neighbors had a tree come down on her house. A couple semis tipped over on the interstate. The power went off for several hours. Guys, for a spinach-type crop, have you considered lamb’s quarters (aka pigweed)? It’s closely related to spinach, delicious, better nutritionally, and is often considered a weed because it grows so easily and prolifically in cultivated soil. Along with purslane, these were “weeds” I never discouraged when I lived up north.

My grandparents had a few lilacs at the back of their house in the country. They were never massive or full that I remember but at least one was bought in the late 70s very early 80s was a really deep purple. My parents gave it to them I presume for mothers day. One name I've seen online is boomerang but it tops out at 6 feet and I remember them being reasonably taller than me, maybe the 8 foot range, because I've been 5'10" since I was in middle school and I've just turned 41. The house was sold about 15 years ago after both my grandparents had passed but when we have driven past in the last few years the lilacs are still there.

From what I understand about no dig, no till method is that the tilling is what brings the weed seeds up. Using a good 6 inches of compost and after laying cardboard or in your case, the weed fabric, the first year, you should never have to till again. I don’t have a garden as large as yours but I laid cardboard last fall, mulched with all my fall leaves and now grass clippings and my garden is doing beautifully. The mulch keeps the moisture in, the few weed I get are so easy to remove. I’m thrilled with the results and thankful that the first year prep really has paid big dividends! Just wanted to share my experience.

Tilling does bring the weed seeds up but, the 10 day till method turns those germinated seeds and weed starts into green manuer. Tilling also brings minerals to the suffrage layers, gets organic matter into the lower layers, keeps un-utilized fertilizers (especially non-organic) from gathering in or along the lower layers, and works on both mechanical and chemical break-up of hardpan. Tilling a wet soil destroys its structure. Tilling a dry soil results in top soil blowing off and then running off with water. Tilling without then covering the soil's surface with plants, compost, or mulch results in the top soil blowing off with other of it being washed off by watering and also by rains and snow. Tilling kills worms and can kill other soil organisms.

@@terryhenderson424 I think many soils need to be tilled in the beginning, after that I prefer the natural order of the life cycle of soil is best for the health of the closed system. I’ll never go back to chemical fertilizers and will work with what nature provides.

@@misterphib I use non coated cardboard that I collect from a variety of sources. The inks are now all organic so print is fine, just don’t use shiny surfaced cardboard. My son is in the automotive and part business so he often has access to large cardboard boxes that I pull off all tape and staples. Almost any store that gets large shipments will give you their cardboard. You only need enough to overlap and cover your garden area. Wetting it down is helpful, then cover it with leaves, grass clippings, compost. It’s a lot of work up front, but the cardboard breaks down beautifully, killing all grass and weeds under it. The soil improves very quickly. We had a fair amount of rain in Georgia last fall and winter which helped a lot.

Was chatting about uwith dad & he cracked up about comments on rocky soil... MO grows rocks! When I lived in Indiana it was CLAY! I used wood chipper & last years corn stalks & old hay & straw (used to insulate around buildings went in & mixed each year in soil with rabbit & goat droppings & of course lots of compost. 6 years later it was a decent garden spot & doggone it, I had to move -i am happy to b back in MO! But I'm in town & disabled now, containers not been successful so far for me, but dad has had great success at his place (88 & he's still going)

Welcome back! Send some of your weather our way, we’re having a cold wet spring in the PNW so we’re way behind with our garden. Pickin’ rocks, sounds like a job for my grandkids when they want spending money! Blessings.

Thank you so much for this video! I really did enjoy every bit of it! I love all of your plants and I love to see you chilling up the garden and I'm so excited to see stuff going in there. I wished I could have some of it to eat I don't have a garden I'm not able to fix it but I am so happy that you are sharing this with me God bless y'all. I'll be waiting and watching here in Paris Tennessee for more.

I am so excited for you guys and your family. I love your greenhouse. Our weather up here in Northern BC is still chilly. I put my seedlings out in my greenhouse on a table but the threat of snow last night forced me to bring them in. But you give me hope that spring is on its way for us too. Love your channel. ❤️🇨🇦

I love seeing you guys work through your problems (specifically with the greenhouse and the soil), it just give me so much confidence that even if I mess it up, there's always next time! This year I'm dedicating 25% of my garden to a new greenhouse, and I couldn't be more excited for my summer crops.

Seattle here! I know 90 is hot! But I am so jealous of your heat. Our weather forecast is cold cold cold. They say April is the coldest April for 10 years and May is shaping up the same. I still have the heat on! I could hear those pesky Ozark rocks pinging against the tiller. Can you make hedgerows around your garden with them? It's my favorite time of year for you guys, gardening!
Finally Planting Day, we just can't catch a break!
