Why Do Down Syndrome People Look Alike?
In this video I will discuss what Trisomy 21 is and what makes Down Syndrome adults and kids unique, what are their features, some health conditions and traits. I use my daughter and a model to illustrate my point.
Make sure to stay for the end where I share some personal thoughts.
Here is a list of the typical Down Syndrome Traits addressed in this video:
1) Slanted Almond Eyes
2) Flatten on the Bridge of the Nose
3) Smaller Ears
4) Larger Head
5) Thicker Neck
6) Tongue (Low tone)
7) Teeth come in at different times
8) Transverse Palm (line straight across)
9) Sandal Toe Feet
10)Thin Hair
11) Some Health Conditions - Vision, small Eustachian Tubes, Immune System lower, Hyperthyroid, blood disorders, heart defect

You mentioned the flatness between her eyes. Those with DS are actually missing a bit of bone there. I am a sonographer, and during the 20 week anatomy scan, we take a profile pic to see if that bone is there. We are also looking at the tongue, because its typically too large for the mouth, which is why many DS people are always sticking their tongue out. Its called Macroglossia. The recessed or small chin, or Micrognathia, is also prevalent in DS babies. We also take pics of the fetal heart, count bones in the fingers, check the back of the neck for fluid, and many other indicators, which might warrant further genetic testing. Knowing about Downs ahead if time can given parents time to adjust, know if the baby might need a heart specialist immediately, and if the might have to give birth at a hospital with an adequate NICU to care for their child. Its a very important exam, so I encourage all moms to be to have it. 🙂

Just to clarify, the tongue is NOT abnormally large, but the mouth is too small so the tongue looks relatively large.

@@zander7 Hi, Zander! Actually, parents can't give their kids Down Syndrome. Trisomy 21 can happen with kids of all colors and backgrounds, young parents, old parents, black parents, white parents. It's not something Parents can control. Education is something a parent can influence. If you didn't have the opportunity as a chid, take it now and inform yourself.

Thank you Just Cozy Things, that was beautifully said. ❤️❤️ It is very clear that he needs to look more into how Down Syndrome comes into place. Many young Moms give birth to DS kids. And in the end it doesn’t matter, because they are people like us and she is the joy of our lives. People with DS, their lives are full and beautiful. People like him inspire me to make more videos like this. Until you meet or are exposed to a person with DS you begin to understand. Thank you for your support Just Cozy Things❤️

I am a french grand mother, no down syndrom in the family, but my mum has a friend with such a daughter, in the 50, this lady knows how to count, read, she went alone to the local grocery, where she was known. I learn a lot on this difference, with youtube, in german and in english, but, not in french, france is so "late" we have a problem with differences in general.

In high school I had became friends with a few students with downs and they looked similar at first too until I spent more time time with them. Brian kept telling everyone I was his girlfriend and I was going to marry him. I worked in the school cafeteria at lunch for extra money and he wouldn't let me bus his table until I danced with him. ☺ He was the sweetest guy and so patient with the other students who needed help walking. @@LivingWithEve I was so blessed to be able to how did the experience that I did have you able to work with ease special people in school when I did. I first met them when I started working and the school cafeteria and Junior High and the first person I met was someone who was just a little slow and she had it very mild Down syndrome and she was very nice and I was so so happy to be her friend. Unfortunately she ended up moving after the end of the school year when we went in to the next grade. And then when I went into High School cheers later I was able to work in the high school cafeteria with some people who were a little mentally slow as well as someone who had mild Down syndrome as well and they were very very sweet people and I just adore them. I was also very blessed to also know them from my second job which is so funny is to of the people I worked with also worked at Toys R Us Part Time with my mom when I started working at Toys R Us as well with my mom I didn't know until I started working there and I saw them. So when I saw them there and I told my mom that ice that I knew that from school and where I knew them from she was like really. and I was like yeah I knew that and it was like well you were going to be working with them on the floor and after I was trained and she just wanted to make sure that I was okay to be working with them because I was to be able to keep an eye on them as well. And I was like sure no problem, one of the reasons being her feeling comfortable enough for me to work with them even being new on the floor was because she's the one who trained me and I was her daughter. She knew that I was a hard worker I wasn't going to you know shirk the work and she knew that I was patient with people that needed patients and that if I had any problems I would come straight to her and get her. After working with them through High School and a little after because they only work there a few years after I graduated before they had to move on through a different program I don't know what it was I really did miss their company I I just was really blessed. I think that anybody who meet someone who has a disability and has a good outlook in life that they can just spend time with them they'll see how it's not something to look at negatively it's just something to look at as a nuisance more than anything. For me as I got older I ended up becoming disabled and I hate being disabled but is a nuisance for me I don't like being disabled and I don't think of myself as disabled most of the time. so when I talk to people and when they talk to me the first thing that comes to my mind and and when I spied myself I don't stay on disabled instrumentals in every other way and manner what I do or my interest in everything and then if that comes up in conversation it doesn't if it doesn't it doesn't because I don't let it Define me and I think that's important for children with disabilities 2 be able to experience as they grow up. I think that's four important for adults to understand that as children they don't shouldn't have to describe themselves as somebody disabled that shouldn't be part of their description it shouldn't have to be part of something that they use as a definition of themselves.

I was actually thinking the same, so thank you for such a thorough explanation!! Makes so much sense and changed my perspective! Thank you!! I would love to see a video how you and your husband met! It really is a blessing that your husband also is on board with homeschooling! You are so blessed!!

Someone very close to me had her baby yesterday. She says they suspect that he has Down Syndrome but they have to wait 24hours to give him a test and/or know for sure. What can I say to help her navigate her way through this and how come they have to wait 24hours? We love this little sweet baby - nothing will change that. I would just like to be supportive and as helpful as I can.

My suggestion is to just be there for her and listen. She is having so many emotions stirring in her at once. When I was in the hospital I had a friend come and literally took photos of us, of the doctor's badges, important paperwork. If you can do this or remind her husband to do this, that will really help. If the diagnosis is positive for DS ... If you can make her meals, babysit if she has other kids, especially since she will have a lot of doctor appointments in the beginning. Even come over and bring things that she likes. Like I had a friend give me a manicure. Hope this helps.

It was very hard. She was in the hospital for a full month and I didn’t get to see my other kids because I was so caught up in hospital drama and checking the nurses (who made a few mistakes with medication). It was tough. Thank you for watching.

this is so cool I have always wondered that because of having a brother with down syndrome. I am only 11 almost 12, (obviously not my account ) but this is very interesting and important u am very glad you are spreading awareness for this cause😊. last year I made yellow and blue ribbon on wdsd for my classmates and they all really appreciate it! I hope everyone can sped awareness for anything, and doesn't have to be down syndrome. u think no matter how young or old you are you can make a difference.😊
