This was a Michael and Tito Jackson interview done in 1980 with help from Janet, by Steve Rosen. The interview took place at Columbia Records' offices in Century City, CA, just as the Jacksons' "Triumph" album had come out. "Off the Wall" had come out a year earlier.
The interviewer said that following the interview, Michael slipped away to another area of the press room and began dancing - after a few minutes, the interviewer went over and asked if he could take a picture with Michael, who smiled, and gestured yes.

I had heard that during this period of time MJ suffered from anxiety around interviews & relied on his family to get through them. We talk so much about mental health today but people seem to still be very judgmental about how stars handled fame. There’s no rule book. Great questions and insightful answers

I was always intrigued by Michael and Tito’s relationship. I remember hearing in a recorded phone conversation how much he thought Tito was like a father figure and loved cars. They have good chemistry here and Tito seems like a good dude.

I love how even though Michael already got the most praise for his singing, dancing and writing, Tito wouldn’t let it go when Michael said he doesn’t really play an instrument, even when Michael kept playing it down - “He plays enough to write hits”. Kind of says it all.

And then he did do that next solo record, in ‘82, and it’s the biggest selling album of all time. So cool to hear him in this time period between off the wall and thriller.

This is by far the BEST interview I’ve heard of Michael Jackson. The reason why is its bout the creative end and process of their work. I don’t care bout their hobbies, where their heads are, their personal lives, I’m all bout the creative end of their work. Thanks for posting!

MJ interviews like this were so rare. People were always so focused on his personal life and his appearance, people never really dug into the music and his career.

Well, this confirmed a few things. But, most important: 1) Michael's prediction of his next solo album release ("Thriller", 1982. My brothers and I went to the record store with our Mom, to get the album). 2) Michael played some drums.....and piano (to compose his songs....as Teddy Riley confirmed).

We went to L.A. in the 80,,s to interview the Jacksons for our mag the NME which is London based, my friend Danny got to meet them and do the interview over 2 days, They had not long released Triumph, he told me that every question he asked Michael, Janet or Randy would whisper in his ear first before he would answer he would also start a full blown conversation with one of his brothers right in the middle of a question then would have to apologise and ask Danny to repeat the question, it became very frustrating & annoying after a while. He also said Michael refused to answer any questions untill his make-up was done. Michael also drove himself on the first day in a red datsun sport car, his brothers teased him that it,s a wonder he got there on time or at all because of his terrible geographic knowledge and driving skills.The second day he left early because he was complaining of a bad back and had a total spaz out because the make up people were late for the photo shoot that we had arranged, Michael was annoyed and everybody knew it. Danny did say though that Michael was very nice, very accommodating and polite most of the time although he did come across a little weird. On the first meet Danny wore a suit as he wanted to impress, when the day ended Michael and Randy approached him and said for the next day which would consist the photo shoot not to be so formal and dress more casual they feel uncomfortable around suits to which he agreed Randy then unfolded his tie and said 'i like this tie, don,t you like this tie Michael'and asked was it from London and if he could have it, to which Danny replied 'yes of course', now it don't get no weirder than that.

It was Michael's silly idea. He started to hate doing interviews. So, he went through this stage where he wouldn't do interviews unless the reporter/journalist fielded it through Janet.

It was done this way to avoid being misquoted, but obviously it was a bit of a farce because when something the interviewer asked particularly peaked his interest, he answers directly.

So the interviewer wouldn't ask any crazy questions. I guess michael thought if the questions were asked or answered through janet since she was a teen at the time,that the guy wouldn't ask anything crazy. Also michael was very shy
@3ver4fter53
@3ver4fter53 3 жыл бұрын
@@00sbabyoldschoolspirit80 That's not the reason why he did that. At the time MJ was not afraid of what you call "silly questions". He regularly did that with Janet or La Toya because he thought this was strange and he wanted to appear strange and mysterious. That was the beginning of his big plan to create a new image, a new character of himself and become the biggest entertainer in the World. He already was a big manipulator at that time.

@@3ver4fter53 I think you're right about that. He loved to play with his public image, creating some sort of mysterious iconic feeling about himself. Which backfired again and again later in his life, though he didn't want or support it any more.
