Liz Truss is “emblematic” of a political class that desires “power for exactly the wrong reasons”
Subscribe: / @newstatesman
With the Conservatives on to their fifth prime minister in just six years, Rachel Cunliffe talks to the political scientist and author Brian Klaas about the leadership problem in politics: why the top jobs attract the worst people; why it was a good thing that Truss was able to fail so quickly; and what we need to do to defend democracy.
Klaas argues that our systems of leadership selection are insufficient, claiming that “nobody actually really knows Boris Johnson, nobody actually really knows Liz Truss”

Most observers knew that Truss would be a disaster. She would never have got anywhere near that job in a meritocracy.

Here’s a suggestion. Lower MP pay to £30,000 per year. No expenses. Then there will be people who are in it for community service not money and power.

That wouldn't work. Sunak is a billionaire. He can afford to do the job for nothing more than the kudos and the opportunity to exploit the country for his own gain. But a decent person on 60 or 70 grand a year with a mortgage to pay will not even consider being abused by the press and half the population for a 50% pay cut.

The salary is a rounding error compared to what some make from speeches, consultancy and the like. 🤡 What your genius plan would do is exclude everyone except the already wealthy and those with rich backers. I can say that with 100% certainty because I've studied history and that's what it was like when MPs were unpaid.

So glad you had this interview. He spoke everything I have been saying about politics and politicians for years. How can people who have no training or credentials be made mps and ministers? Why are the standards so low? It is bound to lead to people with no understanding of the mechanics of a country or its economy thinking they have the answers because nobody has ever told them otherwise. Politicians should undergo significant testing and training to ensure they meet a minimum bar.

No puzzle at all. In my experience, virtually everyone at the top shouldn't be there. The culture of 'leadership' circles pretty well everywhere in the UK is one where only this type of person gets on. It just reproduces itself again and again by excluding anyone who doesn't play the game. Far from an aberration, Johnson was a completely typical specimen. He just had ALL the vices in exceptional quantities, so it was a difference of degree, not a qualitative one.

I need to disagree with you (though I don't know on how many levels or to what extent on each level). Whilst there certainly are people "at the top" who really aren't cut out for it, often times, they are the right people, but the game that's being played, which they've played well (or at least, bothered to engage with) is what's messed up. It's the classic "don't hate the player, hate the game". There are "natural leaders", who're happy to make the decisions, own the consequences, put in the work, consult people and consider ideas they dislike and do what's necessary to get results and make progress. The issue is that the results and the progress they're charged with achieving is broadly detrimental to society and they're only permitted to make concessions for it, where it'll benefit "the shareholders". Playing a different game, those same people would still be "at the top", but achieving whatever the results demanded of them by making whatever decisions will bring about those results. The issue we [as always] face of course, is that we need some degree of those "at the top" to support changing the game, within the game they're playing and succeeding at.

Piffle. It's in the Tory mentality to be corrupt. The party motto could well be "s***w you, I'm doing alright. Just stay still a moment while I kick you in the b***s". Labour are all human - with all that that entails - but at least make an effort. Never forget, people get the politicians they deserve. After all, who does the voting?

Very interesting but the political volatility in the U.K. is caused by 1. Brexit - it has damaged the Tories probably irreparably. 2. Your electoral system - first past the post. 3. An essentially 2 party system which means regular oscillation between left and right. None of this is mentioned in an otherwise excellent interview

One other point, democracy didn't oust Truss, the markets and bankers did. They said no to her fiscal policy and then the party had no choice but to boot her, then the party announced a new king. Even a communist regime can carry out a move like that.

I like how democracy is never the problem but politicians always are. Context matters a lot. Drop a David Cameron in Mexico and watch how he changes in his tone and demeanour. Should he decide to be altruistic and not strictly self-interested, he fails. This tends to be what happens in a lot of the world. Which is why blaming "leadership" for the failures of these countries tend to be too simplistic a diagnosis - and doesn't explain much.

I believe we have reached the stage in national and world development where in order to qualify to represent the people all candidates need to undergo psychometric testing before a single vote is cast. When I was in my teens and twenties I had a number of jobs, all without qualifications, the most demanding requirement of which was to sign the Official Secrets act before I went to work for a company in the aerospace sector. When I eventually decided to retrain as a secondary teacher using my industrial experience, I had to study for 3 years for a Certificate. My CV since then is full of extra qualifications and related experiences, all backed up by courses. It seems to me that, in the unlikely event that I would wish to become a politician, all I would need is either the backing of a political party or bags of money to pay my own way. Given the responsibility required, there should surely be hoops to jump through before being unleashed on an unsuspecting electorate. Currently there are no qualification gates to navigate and this leaves this nation very vulnerable, as witness especially the post Thatcher years.

??? Anyone heard of proportional representation?.. maybe he could ask about who gets elected if you have a slightly different system.. that doesn't promote a blue Vs red solution and gives the loudest and most slippery the largest platform.. ? .. some countries don't have a US or UK system... And politics look very different.

It's all very well wagging our fingers at the political class we elect... when we ignore the fact we actually elected them. It's the electorate that needs to educate itself and stop believing the lies and the comforting BS they spout... and then if you do believe it and vote for them, well whose fault is that?
@Skylark_Jones

I think you're right. Everybody needs an education in seeing beyond the surface charm and lies of the would-be politicians who put themselves forward: are they "in it to win it", or are they there to genuinely serve the public? Questions people often don't ask, instead looking at superficial traits like "lovable buffoon" and "blond ruffled hair"(!)
@julianfoot8748
@julianfoot8748 Жыл бұрын
@@Skylark_Jones Exactly. I met Johnson years ago when he was just a lying journalist and I thought he was a noxious buffoon then. He should never have been allowed a newspaper column outside of the Beano, but again his network gave him access. However the electorate knew he was a lier, accepted he lied, believed his lies, and voted for the walking disaster... again more fool the electorate. I can't blame Boris for being a tool, it's just the way he is. I can blame those who facilitated and voted for him.

.in terms of results and change for the future, Brian Klaas's "study" is irrelevant and ineffective! To understand that go back and listen again but this time pay attention whenever he or the interviewer use the word "we" ask yourself these questions: Who is this "we"- who is included and who is excluded? Those referred to as "we", how many of them already have power, e.g. the Press, politicians, political parties, trade unions/universities etc and other institutions? Finally ask yourself: This "we", how many of "us" belong to that famous 1% minority who own the planet? Xx
