It was written for Liza by Kander and Ebb for her starring role in the movie New York, New York, which was also written especially for her…and predated Sinatra’s recording of the NY NY movie theme song. Liza’s recording never became a commercial successes, but became a staple of her stage concerts that audiences absolutely demanded that she sing. Sinatra’s later recording became a big commercial hit, which made the public believe the song was written for him, but not true.

One of the great live performers for many years, but she has never been much of a record seller. As her vibrato took over, her voice actually became a challenge to admire. Even when young, she never had the delicate beauty of her mother's early vocals, but she's a hell of an entertainer.
@tencontento91772 жыл бұрын
Well said. The vibrato became a full-fledged wobble, and she was frequently off pitch, especially in full voice. She danced magnificently, and had such high energy that people didn't seem to notice. I was an opera singer, so I did.

Yes, as your video shows, Liza is known as a "belter", and in her prime, she could knock a song out of the park better than anyone. Unfortunately, belting has become Liza's own stereotype and she had so much more to offer that's almost now forgotten. She had, for many years, a truly supple, beautiful and rich voice for singing ballads and lyrical songs. That for me, showed Liza at her most vocally gifted. The belting sold tickets and made for show stopping numbers, and unfortunately took it's toll on her voice's other side too early. She is still 100% Liza and that's why we love her.

Yes, she could also deliver softer songs very well, and in her concerts she delivered it all : Energy, Emotion, Dance and Entertainment. The voice problems started in the 90s. I think it is a mix of overbelting, way too much cigarettes, alcohol and of course her massive health breakdown when the doctors told her she might never be able to perform again. But she has given us so much, she was a big inspiration for me

An absolute legendary performer, possibly one of the greatest entertainers ever. Apart from the well documented lifestyle and health issues that obviously contributed to her vocal decline, I also think that she would have benefited from some lessons in technique. That may have changed the character of her voice a bit but would have served her well. The other thing I have never understood is the early arrangements, some of them are clearly outside of her range and resulted in vocal strain, the damage from which isn't so evident when you are young but as you get older, the problems start. Her 1987 Carnegie Hall recording is her magnum opus in my opinion. She never sounded better. Sadly when I finally got to see her live she was not long after an illness and married to David Gest. It was a little bit of a sorry spectacle but star power and presence by the bucket load ❤️

Liza is the only person who ever made her mother nervous onstage so I'm inclined to agree with you in the technical sense, but I think her mother topped her in sheer presence.
