LJ78 Toyota Prado with 3UZ and A650 5 speed automatic 4x4.

I've had a history of working on this vehicle. Built many years ago and I did some work on the LJ78 prado landcruiser then it was sold a couple of times before it returned with this customer. We removed the 3uz-fe engine management functions from the stock ecu and used a link thunder for that leaving the stock ecu doing only doing the control of the A650 5 speed auto. This vehicle runs a prado transfer case and an AiM dash.

Hi I'm jaywee from Brunei currently I have a lj79 with 2lt engine with original auto transmission I would like to put 1uz or 3uz in it but I have no Idea what should I need to change. Do I need to change both the axle and transmission do I need a conversion kit for the transmission and also the long shaft do I need to mod it as well?

With the a650 is it possible to have torque converter lockup in 1st and 2nd gear?

We had one which we had the valve body modified to allow 2nd gear lockup so with suitable mods yes. Then we fitted a manual lock up switch.

The owner fitted Mk5 VW golf seats. Since doing so he has found adaptors for holden commodore or falcon seats which he suggests would have been easier. Cheers Kelvin

Hey guys! I'm from Malaysia and I'm doing a similar swap to my landcruiser lj78. I'd like to ask what radiator are you guys running since the 3uzfe radiator is too big to fit the original position. Thanks a bunch!

Its been ages since I've seen this truck but the owner someones pops on here and answers questions. From my memory I think this one has the prado radiator and I'm fairly sure it has the hydraulic fan from the 1uz vvti fitted. Cheers Kelvin

No I'm not interested in diesel swaps as I specialize in petrol v8s.

The customer supplied them so I'm not sure where he got them sorry. At a guess they might have been from Ali-express . Cheers

Long shot but how was the transfer adapted to the a650, any photos?

Negitive. Way to long ago now. This station wagon is now a ute. Adaptors for the A650 are easy enough to buy these days. I have another on its way and have a video to be released soon on a A761 to landcrusier transfer. In stock I have a A650 to Gen 3 surf with the Left hand drop.

Still testing the reliability, its only been running in this truck for 15 years with no issues, so its too early to tell.

How are the standard 8" differentials holding up.

Just fine for the last 10 years. Auto vehicles tend to be much more gentle on diffs. Cheers Kelvin

Have stripped one crown wheel, but that was subjected to shitty situation and abuse in reverse, other than that no worries on the drivetrain

A prado transfer case. Its been a while since Ive seen this one but I think it was the vacuum engagement transfer. Cheers Kelvin

Hello Christie. The owner installed the bullbar himself. He has done most of the mods on this truck himself and spent many days in the workshop helping me with the wiring too. Cheers.

Hi Maquiti, it's an ARB bar for a 75 series, will bolt up but have lifted mine 90mm on the mounts to suit 40mm body lift and different front to 75

If using a 1hz I would use the trans from behind the 1hz to make it easier.

If you use a complete motor and transmission setup from the donor and transplant the whole unit then it should be straightforward. Cheers

@kennedymutinda4806 ac is controlled using the aftermarket ecu, ac pump is the 3uz item, rest of the system is the LJ78 with some aftermarket sensors to modernise the ac setup

I get the 90 series swap contacts from oz frequently. The v6 90 series are interesting over there as in most states fell into a different category for getting them engineered due to the fact they struggled to pass the emission standards from new. This means most of the time no age restrictions on engines to fit to them. Its really all the same stuff any conversion needs. Cheers Kelvin

@@MrShanilicious the one off the stock LJ78 prado auto. Its not a straight bolt over. Theres a custom adaptor involved.

I think you are asking if the A650 output spine is the same as input spline as a vf series transfer case from 130 surfs and 70 series prado. The answer is no.
