The Seattle Monorail is a wonderful piece of history still gliding above the streets of Seattle! This is the first ALWEG Monorail built in the United States!

Our toddler loves your videos. He requests them (by naming the locations) often. This video was the first we watched, since the Seattle monorail is in one of our books. Thank you for being a lens on "the outside world" during this time especially - my husband and I are learning along with our toddler 😁

The first test track for ALWEG was located in Cologne/Germany in the early 50's until 1967. Nothing remains. It runs just 10 miles from my todays home . ALWEG stands for its inventor "AL-fred WE-nner-G-ren, a businessman from Sweden!

I mean, it may be pretty impractical, barely ridden, and only have two stations, but it's still pretty damn cool it exists. Too bad it's being overshadowed by the Link Light Rail project.
@246spyder6 жыл бұрын
Two stations, what a waste of money. A good example of bad thinking.
@MikMoen6 жыл бұрын
They originally wanted five lines as an extension, the first having 17 stations. It wasn't bad thinking it was shitty bureaucracy. This stretch is an icon and something for tourists to get from a downtown shopping center to the Space Needle and Museums.
@notsure61875 жыл бұрын
light rail is unsustainable for Seattle but they will never build heavy rail. for it to be sustainable they're going to have to build alot more lines
@achmadiqbal805 жыл бұрын
2 station only? WTH is that too wasted isn't it?

Built for the Century 21 Exposition (an official World's Fair) in 1962, but never expanded. The ride--all of two minutes long--is still exciting. Now that the regional ORCA card is accepted, I will be using it more once it reopens after the pandemic.

America should have these high speed monorails all over the country in all the cities the same way Eisenhower did with the freeways back in the 1950's. Imagine how many people we can employ building a trans national monorail system. Automation can build these trans national monorail infrastructure a lot faster and more efficiently. Just an idea.
@Luke_Starkenburg5 жыл бұрын
Paul Page I agree that we need high speed transportation, but this Seattle Monorail is not high speed. This is meant for urban metro networks, not long distance intercity travel.
@notsure61875 жыл бұрын
high speed? 😂
@Countcho5 жыл бұрын
maybe Hyperloop's everywhere will be the next big thing? We really need something. Our roads are way too congested in American cities with the lack of public transport.

Nice vintage monorail! It seems that the 2 tracks are closer after the curve at 2:33 ?
@Luke_Starkenburg6 жыл бұрын
ErebosSan yes, you are correct. And it was a bad design choice because a few years ago, two trains tried to occupy the station at the same time and side swiped each other! You can look up pictures of this accident easily. When the monorail was first built, there was a Station by the Westlake Mall, but when a skyscraper was to be built there, they pinched the tracks and put them on the side of the mall.
@perrywales6 жыл бұрын
In this pic you can see the original Downtown station. Where the triangular buildings are is now a highrise office tower and mall and outdoor plaza. To fit the trains into the space, they did pinch the lines together, you can see the ramp extensions that reach out over the inner track to get to the Red train in the video. A inexperienced operator ignored signals to stop and they did crash into each other once. Now there is Active Train Control to avoid another mishap. c4.staticflickr.com/4/3152/3012653535_85e2a0292d_b.jpg
