Dean Kishore Mahbubani had a Q&A session with the audience during his book launch of "Can Singapore Survive?".
Some of the issues discussed in the Q&A session are:
1) SMRT and the Public transport in Singapore
2) How can Singapore continue to be an exceptional state or society in the next 50 or 100 years?
3) What role will India play in Singapore in the next 50 years?
4) What do you think of Singapore's role as a role model for countries in the region? Do you think that Singapore will continue to be an attractive place for upcoming policy makers to come and learn about policy?
The Q&A session ends with Kishore Mahbubani and Tommy Koh revealing the book cover of "Can Singapore Survive?".

@111,178 views and 111 comment I was 19 when Singapore became independent and by the grace of God I belong to the generation that saw our country developed in a way that surpasses all imagination. As a teacher I can draw the anology of achieving 100 % passes for my class but thereafter to maintain that achievement or to value add with more distinctions would be a gigantic task. That is where Singapore will be facing the next 50 years. Kishore has done the most important job of drawing this task to the attention of all of us Singaporeans less we lose our energy. Amongst Singaporeans after Mr Lee Kuan Yew , Kishore is the next thinker who is able to command our attention when he speaks. Let us all pray for his good health and happiness to share with all of us.

Wish he talks more about build an unity and identity through pride in the Asia(including Australia), similar to the Framework that existed and united European Union post WWII, and reduce the dependency on external players such as US and EU. The mood of the external players you can not change, but you can use this as a drive and motivation to mobilize your own people through your leadership, build the sense of superiority (not by crazy "you are better than your neighbors" stuff, but a sensible pride of BECAUSE YOU ARE IN the region.) Notice: the difference from what the easy and shortsighted shortcut Japan used to had that led to hostility and mistrust) and a responsible and inclusive co-prosperous vision for the region. Reducing the dependency on the west, (not ditch the west) via region's own innovative idea to lead and united the region. Asia counts more than a third of world GDP, yet it's the most hostilely divided and militarized region in the world. (Yet, the EU struggles to push the defense spending past 2%). In long term, reduce the dependency on external Ex-Asia luxury goods through domestic culture innovations, startups, pride and unity, (Similar to what Germany did in the 1930s). This is the way forward for you, this is the future! Thank you,"

laga Zhang re: India's future. Golden Age 2050 THE IRON LAW OF BAD DEMOGRAPHICS. 1) Only India and USA have adequate demographics for 2050. (see charts a-d below) USA is one of the few places that can incorporate immigration - if we are not swamped out first as was Rome. Further, we will not soon lose the higher education system where every genius wants to go. 2) China is a status quo power because of demographics and 800 million people who do not live in either a tier one or tier two city. (see chart d below) 3) USA now has more hydrocarbons than god. Both energy (natural gas) and industrial feed stocks (natural gas) are both plentiful and cheap. Natural gas is a byproduct of oil fracking and will continue to be flared until pipes are installed. Kiishore is a foresighted great thinker with deep knowledge of the sound politics, leadership and the economy in most countries of the world. Consequently, Singapore can not only survive , but also its systems -- racial-unity, good system of education, steady and progressive growth of economy and concern of its population -- are for most of the countries in the world to learn and establish for the good of their populations and global mankind.

There are many successful cities in the world, many with economic growth, 15% a year, even 20% or 30% a year. Smallness and compactness can be an advantage. A high income inequality looks less serious than if the country has a defined rural area with a naturally lower per capita income as well as lower cost of living but it is not.

Multi-culturalism used to be an advantage to Singapore's success prior to the 1980s but now it becomes a disadvantage because it seems to me the government is hiding behind multi-culturalism to advance open door immigration policy and admit too many foreigners which hit Singaporeans. We should be aware to prevent multi-culturalism from being misused for private interests. I also wish to make it a point that I'm not referring to foreigners who do jobs that Singaporeans are not so inclined to do ie construction industry. Singapore should continue to welcome them.

singapore's uprise benefits from the cold war and its bilateral dealing...now it offers little allurement for global talents due to its rigid system of innovation and faces a potential talent drain. I do not see it has a promising prospect.

Most likely. A neutral country with decent defense force, quite a lot of cash but nothing to steal really (no oil or gas). As long as the food security is maintained and the city can adapt to climate warming episodes (looks like they planned ahead), it should be sweet. I mean its not like Malaysia is going to starve Singapore or its got any sworn enemies that I am aware of.

Kishore knows the Chinese precisely on the issue of Taiwan because he lives and works in a Chinese society for very long. For China to be unemotional about losing Taiwan again, is greater in trauma than say, the US experiencing 9/11 twice by by roughly the same terrorists org., and be willing not to take a retaliatory action. That is why Kishore said, he can guarantee that China would pay any costs to right the wrong that she perceive as the great unjust, in the form of CoH (Century of Humiliation 2.0
