The West has been at the forefront of world history for almost 200 years. But that era is over, says Kishore Mahbubani, one of Asia’s most renowned thinkers. China, India, and others in the “Rest” are rapidly overtaking the West, both at an economic and at an intellectual level. On April 14th, we will speak with the second thinker in the De Balie Invites series to find out: what is the cause of this switch? And how should the West respond?
“Americans and Europeans see it as self-evident that it is their responsibility to judge what is happening in the rest of the world. Based on the idea of moral superiority. This has been tolerated for more than 200 years, but listen: that time has passed. It’s about time to start listening to the rest of the world.” - Kishore Mahbubani (Trouw).
On April 14th, Mahbubani tells us about his newest book: Has the West Lost it? In this book, he writes about the decline of Western dominance, and the ignorance of the West about this fact. Mahbubani warns the West: it needs to adapt to this new reality, and it needs to do so quickly.
Mahbubani investigates in a refreshing manner the myths of Western dominance with the critical perspective of an outsider. Paul Scheffer will lead the conversation with Kishore this evening.
Kishore Mahbubani is a Singaporean academic and former diplomat. He is a Professor in the Practice of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore where he was formerly Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. From 1971 to 2004, he served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In that role, he served as President of the United Nations Security Council in January 2001 and May 2002.
Paul Scheffer (1954) is publicist and professor European studies at Tilburg University and Amsterdam University. He published several books and articles on Europe and the importance of boarders, culture and politics.

About De Balie Invites
In De Balie Invites, De Balie welcomes international thinkers to Amsterdam to discuss the relevant topics of this day and age. De Balie sees it as her duty to stimulate reflection and dialogue: the essentials for an open, democratic and civil society and constitutional state. Therefore we ask international speakers to open up the debate and speak about subjects that could use a new or different perspective. Subjects that describe the age we’re living in, with thinkers who will have become the key figures of our time, when we look back a hundred years from now. De Balie Invites has an impressive line-up of guest speakers. Keep a close eye on our website for updates on the next guests!

N E D E R L A N D S :

West prospered due to colonial rule. It did not share the prosperity willingly but it happened nevertheless. West's decline is inevitable when the 2 giants China and India have started to forge ahead, former much faster than the latter.

Everybody knows India is not qualified at this stage to be a giant. India is far behind China. It is appropriate if India be comparable to Bangladesh or Pakistan or Iran. First India must be able to provide a toilet to her own citizen before try to match with China, Matching India with China is akin like matching a dirty beggar to a rich tycoon. It is disgusting to draw such a match

I cannot agree more. As Lee Kuan Yew once said, democracy is the result of prosperity, not the cause of it. It also matches the Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. So how exactly did the west prosper? I cannot help but think its due to its colonial expeditions, reaping resources from all over the world. Despite all that resources, it still took America 100 years to abolish slavery, 150 years before women could vote and 200 years before black people could vote. Its laughable how the west continue to preach democracy all over the world even if it means (undemocratically)invading other countries and changing the regime. Over 50% of the democratic countries in the world today remain poor and 3rd world, democracy does not guarantee progression or prosperity as mentioned already. More often than not when basic needs are not secured, democracy crumbles and degrade into populism or get hijacked by plutocracy. America is a perfect example of a failing democracy today. That is because China and India's rise sees the reduced western influence in the Asia region where the west cannot continue its hegemony. It managed to force Japan to its heels with its trade war against it back in 1980s and its trying to do the same to China today. But China is way stronger and is more resilient given its 5000 years of culture and civilization. Its likely the west won't succeed in blocking Asia's growth.

India and China have been neighbours for 5000 years and during this period they have had only one major war, and that too was a Western legacy of border dispute. While European neighbours have fought a war with each other virtually every decade during this period.

Peta Gonkyi That is a lie. Tibet was a part of China since the days of Kublai Khan, before England before an imperialist power. And why Tibet became a part of China? For self preservation in a civil struggle between clans in Tibet, the Dalai Lama, then, sought protection from China eventually asked to be absorbed. The lamas were an influential power in China since the Yuan Dynasty, less so during the Ming Dynasty and throughout the Qing Dynasty with different clans within Tibet taking the dominant role due to internal power struggle. When Qing China ceded power to the Republicans in 1911, it was for all of Qing China, including the whole of Tibet. Although Tibet tried to claim independence after the Qing Dynasty under whatever clan in power at the moment, this was not recognized by any foreign country although Britain tried to make a treaty with this self-proclaimed Tibetan state without the support of Republican China. Britain, and all major western countries, Inc using Britain and the US, have at one time or other since 2008 have accepted Tibet as part of China. Even the Dalai Lama accepted that Tibet is part of China politically and he is only the religious leader. I don’t see any country other than India claiming that South Tibet is a part of India, including Jawaharlal Nehru.

Tibet was invaded alright. By India. In 1951, four years after the Raj has already left, India invaded and annexed South Tibet including Tawang and occupy it to this day. Tawang is the birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama and home to a four hundred years old Tibetan monastery. In 1987 India renamed South Tibet to the so called Arunachal Pradesh. In 2009 South Tibet is officially recognized by the United Nation as a disputed territory. This map, published by the National Geographic in 1912, clearly shows that Tawang was part of China.www.digitalcommonwealth.org/search/commonwealth:x633f939c

I quickly found 2 wars between them in the past 200 yrs. More importantly, who cares? Even if China was never at war with India all that time, China WAS constantly at war. Clans fighting clans for dominance, being invaded and doing the invading. You don't think the Great Wall was built and re-built just for fun, do you? China had a civil war from 1850-1864 that killed 25 million to 100 million people. Your portrayal of China as a peaceful country is so pathetic it is laughable. So I laugh at you!!!

British were short of manpower & used Indian soldiers to wage war on China killing thousands of Chinese peasants. Indians were also used as slave labor in British plantations all over the. India was not a nation before Brits - they were war mongering clans always killing each other. That's why Muslims & British found it so easy to divide & conquer India with such few numbers. Even Buddhism was wiped out in India & it was Chinese who preserved Buddhism in translated manuscripts & had thousands of temples. Everybody thought Buddhism originated in China because of that. It was British archaeologists who unearthed Buddhist sites in India & proved Buddhism originated in India & Nepal. All the Buddhist sites in India were covered by Hindu shrines. India has done nothing compared to what China has done for humankind.

I'm sure West Africa is very grateful to the West for centuries of slavery, colonialism and neocolonialism. How lucky India was to live under benign British rule for so long. There must have been millions of Chinese opium addicts who were very grateful to the West for the endless supply of opiates. I'm sure the native Americans would thank you if you could for all of the many gifts Europeans transported across the ocean. Unfortunately, they are mostly extinct. And how grateful the world is as it enters a sixth mass extinction event for human-induced global warming and the threat of World War III. Thank you, West for "sharing your gifts with the rest"!

Alternate ideas. War deaths declined because the West stopped killing each other and their colonial slaves. Majority of war deaths was WWI , WWII , Korean, Vietnam and the overthrow of colonial rule. Now the deaths are mostly innocents from US bombs. World poverty has dropped because China had lifted over 700 million people out of poverty not because of the west. The knowledge of the west was based on Eastern and Middle East foyndations. The west used this knowledge and developed WMDs in all their wars. There are many more alternate conclusions of the west's impact on humanity. Kishore has written his book through rose colored glasses.

Great speech as usual from Mr. Kishore Mahbubani. The biggest problem with EU is due to a lot of internal (mostly financial) and external (mostly security and refugee) issues, they can not come to a consensus on almost about anything. Every goverment of EU is more about themselves first, then EU. If such mindset can not change, I have a very dim view about how EU will continue in the future, let alone to be functional in geopolitics matters.

Accountability to the people is in fact espoused by many non-Western civilisations too. China's mandate of heaven and the Islamic caliph's legitimacy during the early Islamic empire are also based on popular accountability. Moreover, much of the poor governance and kleptocracy in the non-West were arguably inherited from colonial power structures based on authoritarianism, exploitation and discrimination.

Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted. (Surah An-Nisa 4:135) In the Holy Qur'an, the word hisaab is repeated more than eight times in different verses hisaab or 'account' is the root of accounting, and the references in the Holy Qur'an are to 'account' in its generic sense, relating to one's responsibility to 'account' to God on all matters relating to human effort for which every Muslim is 'accountable'. It does not matter what action the Muslims do either ibadah (solah) or purchasing shares in the stock market, eating , sleeping like daily jobs they must follow the Islamic teaching framework carefully. The importance of accountability to the man’s life also has been mentioned by Holy Quran: “…Lo the hearing and the sight and the heart - of each of these will be asked” (Quran, Bani Israil, 17:36) Abdullah reported that Allah’s Messenger Muhammad SWT said: Every one of you is a guardian and accountable (mas’ul) for his charge. Thus the Khalifa is a custodian of the people and He is responsible for them. And a man is a guardian of his household and he is accountable for them; and a woman is in charge of the household and her children and she is accountable for them; and a servant is guardian of his master’s property, every one of you is accountable for his subjects (Bukhari)

44.20. De Balie posted a direct question of " don't worry about that because the chinese will behave" in the context of China possibly becoming the first world power. Western arrogance is so predictable. The implication of that statement is that China has not been "behaving" or will not "behave" when it become the no.1 world power. In what way has China not "behaved" or will not "behave" in the future?. This westerners' imposition of its bias, prejudice and self anointed universal values on the rest of the world is not just annoying, but a clear reflection of its hubris and arrogance. By any measure China has certainly been "behaving" so much better than the west or the US. Who are the most prolific war mongering countries? Who are the most prolific interferer in the sovereign affairs of other countries? Who are the most prolific imposter of illegal and cross national damaging economic, financial, political sanctions on other countries; just to list a few. Is it China?

They talked so much about Japan and how it failed shortly before surpassing the US, and whether this might be an analogy to China's future development or not, but did not mention the Plaza Accord, which wasn't an event that emerged out of the *instrinsic* economic conditions of both Japan and the US, but was basically a tool used by the US to *coerce* Japan into failure, and the reason why this tool could be applied in the first place was the geopolitical power that the US had over Japan. Of course people in the West tend to overlook or downplay this fact and want to see the reason for Japan's failure in economic and/or cultural aspects, but not in the ruthlessness of the US when it comes to peer competitors and how to keep them down by virtually any means. I think also because of this habit of white washing and maintaining comfortable blind spots not a few Westerners (even those with academic background) are not able to assess the current situation realistically. Just as a side note: China is neither a US vassal nor a Western client state, it can't be forced to sell off its tech industry, handover crucial patents or appreciate its currency in order to strangulate its own exports. And as Mr. Kishore Mahbubani already mentioned, China has a population four times greater than the US, whereas the Japanese population is only one third of it. And last but not least: The US is in a very different internal state compared to the 1980s.

CHINA, Japan, South Korea or Singapore (also add Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand), it's about governance being on high moral ground so system is respected and sustainable. India's total exports are less than Singapore. India can't prosper and survive with western weaponry and without spending on human development. The geographical limits and expansionism are not everything. If farmers instead of earning enough suicide in India, it should be worst place. If Pakistan is occupied by agents of West, nothing can happen there either. Hence leaderships of the region have to rise and get out of quagmire of backwardness. The China making it possible seems the only possibility, if India has a vision of next 100-200 years at least.

The West, by colonising and occupying countries around the world, interrupted the natural evolution and development of the rest of the world. Therefore, the rest of the world, for a while, suffered from a conflict of identity. No one knows how the world will have developed without the plunder and genocide committed by the West. India, in my opinion, is one country which to this day illustrates a conflict of identity. There was a great interruption, disruption to the natural development of the rest of the world. The time for retribution is a long time over due.

Two civilisations Eastern and Western....... Complementary on the Cross. Mental & Spiritual [Eastern Civilisation] Material & Individualism [Western Civilisation] ======== Stark differences between the two civilisations: Eastern - develop spiritually; loyalty to one's master and to one's ancestors [ancestors' worship in olden times], and daughter-in-law to look after the mother-in-law [olden cultures]. Western - develop materials; loyalty to the community; the couple as an independent unit is important; and not having a culture for daughter-in-law to look after the mother-in-law.

It does not play by the rules and CCP is above the rule of law. This is country there is no human right, no freedom and a police state. Not entire Asia but at best South East Asia has transformed itself, thanks to hard labour (they subsidized every product and didn't charge the fair compensation), sense of direction, and investing in human development and ensuring governance. Western powers (specially America) looted everything from the world and colonized and manipulated the world even after WWII. Western powers would still continue to hatch conspiracy against China and rest of the world. But fact remains whosoever has survived and progressed has been based on leadership quality. India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh lacked that quality leadership, which was imposed by the West on this region to control it properly. India doesn't have any hope of rising like China. PAKISTAN has also the slim reasons. Ignoring human development and hating your own people is the biggest disservice where swings cannot be changed every 100 years. Even Russia and Central Asian Republic and Africa on the other side also need to join the world. But Muslim World with all the resources seems aloof from the world. Nobody allows anybody opportunity to rise. You have to create it.

The turn of events for Asian countries for the last 40 years comes from people who have had achieved better education from the US universities and have ,therefore, think logically and intelligentlyy to move forward in the 21st century. Most developing countries in ASEAN countries are working hard to improve their poverty stricken population like China to build a more harmonious society to prevent political conflict among its people. Troubles never come singly when problems arising on- off situation when Asian countries still lack behind in many ways.

Ultimately it's not a question of East vs West, but Democracy vs Totalitarianism. The global struggle is "modern thinking" vs the old traditional ways from when all governments (and religions) were totalitarian. The CCP (not China itself) is the very antithesis of the "great contributions" made by the West.

The socioeconomic system known as capitalism is essentially and profoundly anti-democratic by its very nature and that is why, I would argue, we've never had any genuine democracy in the West, only a passing resemblance to it, and even this is now under challenge. What's more, western corporate propaganda portrays democracy and capitalism (eg. in such phrases as 'liberal democracy') as being one and the same, inextricably linked, as if one is a natural extension of the other. This syncretising of two opposing things that are, in my opinion, ultimately incapable of being reconciled in a satisfactory manner, is what western ideologues, are doing a very good job of convincing people is true.

The western country can change, but not change political system toward china and russia. we still keep on western democratic political system. At present, The lack of western country have nothing, the only way on lack of western country is technology and science development. The western country should notice and change through technology and science development, that's correct choice. If country want to make great, it is absolutely not less than science revolution development. science revolution development based on knowledge's structure and rich imagination. einstein's famous quotes that make me to admire. imagination is very important than knowledge, knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces science revolution development on entire world. We hope that every country have own's ancient history of science development and ancient philosophia.

China's rapid military and economic growth is to coordinate with the forthcoming Christ. The Lord God has chosen him among Chinese, a nation more in number than any people. Before his appearance, the earth would have a tremendous catastrophe in order to first remove those evil countries which oppose the growth of China so that China can smoothly assist the saint in the conduct of the world salvation. From the Bible (KJV): Deuteronomy 7:6 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. Deuteronomy 7:7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:

Nothing happens by chance. The elite that manipulate the global economy knows what they are looking for. Never mix the global analyzes data with country or region analyzes. Globally speaking, it has improved significantly but once bring to west economy countries, this represented a transfer of middle class wealth of their countries to China, India, etc.. The improvement of any social class will never occur without the deterioration of the another social class in other place. It is a zero sum account. And it was done by very intencional motivation at the beginning. Exploring low cost of labor cost in China and India. But these countries knew the opportunity to develop in longer period taking advantage of greed of the elite. But elite and multinational corporations are very happy anyway because the country performance or region performance do not matter for them, as far as they get their objectives. Things will happen as the powerful elite desires to happen. The comments of this video are just temporary facts of today.
