I really wanted to see your reaction with you at the time of the premiere - I was waiting for it ... Unfortunately, life made it possible for me to listen to this song with you only now. I'm not surprised - I knew this song would delight you musically and vocally. It's a great song! For that you surprised me that you decided to post two live versions - it's a great decision, thank you for that! However, once again - with all my love for NW live performances - the most interesting vocally and musically for me is the studio version, because it contains everything that cannot be realized live. Maybe it could even be done, but it would be difficult and the effect would not be guaranteed. Tarja's vocals recorded separately and stacked together sound great and the instrumental fragments are amazing - you really want to hear it! It's really fun to see the band live in 1999 and compare them to what they are today. You can clearly see how great a group they were back then and they still are! I am not surprised to see how focused Tuomas and the rest of the band are - they were perfectionists then and wanted the music to sound great - and to sound! And then you move us 20 years later and we hear a band richer in experience all these years. Could Floor copy Tarja? Of course, she could and probably would quite neatly do it for her, but she does not do it, because few artists want to copy someone else - she would only be a good craftsman. And someone like her creates her own version of the original and does it great! In the Buenos Aires version, the band has a great asset - Troy! I often say that Troy enriched this band a lot - you can hear it here. Emppu has a lot more freedom with the support of Troy's guitar, his flute is a real flute, so Tuomas has more freedom on the keyboards - the instrumental layer benefits from this. If I would like to list these three versions, the studio version comes to me the most, then the live version with Tarja, because it's nice to return to the history of the band and Tarja's wonderful voice, and then the version from Buenos Aires, because I see an experienced band enriched with new vocal and instrumental elements.

I agree with you, Troy definitely gives another dimension to the old songs with his instruments. He was the missing piece of the band, he fits perfectly. Experience and maturity have given more credit to all the members. Emppu was an excellent musician, he's now even better. It's so great to be able to listen to the olds songs with Floor without cringing. But I'm hopeless, I'll always be nostalgic about Tarja. Hearing Tarja sing "without you the poetry within me is dead" gives me goosebumps, not with Floor and God knows how I love Floor and how wonderful she is.

You might have a clue in what you said : never forget that Tuomas wrote this with Tarja in mind. Exactly the way he wrote "Human. :||: Nature." with Floor in mind. I am not sure nobody will ever sing this album, but Floor. The song is built for Tarja, but Floor can defend the song very well. They are so great!

Hi Quylain, you know already that the Oceanborn is my favourite album and yes you are in it. Gesthimane is one of my favourite song of the album,i do i love all, but this song love more because they played the first years in lives and i always loved to seeing Tarja to singing better and better in time. Of course i like Floor's version and i was happy to played live again for the new fans. I like Tarja's version more because I used to hearing from Tarja for twenty years now and this can not change. I like the studio version very much indeed, all the guys are perfect. Tuomas, Emppu, Jukka and Sami are great for their age, very good musicians also, love this NW era sooooo much. They played in small clubs in some European cities and in Finland. Small audience but all enjoyed the music. I have a lot of videos from this era from the fans an d i am exciting to know, how much great they are now. We are still in the Oceanborn and in first complete album, yes all of the previous singers and musicians do great job,i don't want this thing new fans to forget never. I was pretty sure that you like the instruments and vocals of Tarja, especially Emmpu's solo are so great, Jukka just perfect as always Tuomas was the master mind behind the scene a great composer and songwriter an amazing song of power symphonic metal. Great reaction Quylain, happy face all the time, loving to seeing your smile. The better will come next suterday with analysis video. Till then,be safe and happy.

Hope Brother Guylain listens to the other 2 named as well, for himself - great, energizing, rejuvenating songs! Darkness and light, comfort of the stars (the road that led to "Endlessness...") and the turmoil of earthly emotions - all delivered with signature NIGHTWISH flair. Have to go listen now, I talked myself into it. :)))

Thank you truly for bringing back memories. It is a wondrous song, with the Poet contemplating his cross (we will get to the one where he IS crucified... and beheaded). But the version from the vaults that you picked with the young band had my heart racing! To see Emppu in the period before he grew the long hair, that must be from another millennium! Oh wait, literally. :)))) The "resurrection" of the song for the "Decades" tour more than did it justice, and I am sure brought old fans into extasy. (I have seen videos of guys in the crowd chanting the opening riff, can you believe it.) And the new lovers of music - they deserved to know this one, absolutely. To make an additional note - you really accentuated well the main strengths and virtues of both star vocalists: the practically inimitable, classical, haunting delivery of Tarja, and the great "singing actress" style of Floor, which basically encompasses any variety of styles a song needs to really capture us. That is why Floor often makes people emotional when they do not even expect that, and that is why many say she makes songs her own. Except for those classics where we are so used to Tarja's voice, that it seemingly cannot be torn and separated from the fabric of the song. Btw, Floor consciously chose to work out her own interpretations of the old hits, stepping away from classical delivery, in order not to compete with Tarja. Thus we have not one singer mimicking the other and trying to "recreate" the past, but get 2 full-blooded versions of the same song... like two world-class conductors directing Beethoven's 9th each in their own reading. I'd say we are blessed.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 3 жыл бұрын
On this, I TO-TA-LY agree! From Beste Zangers, we know now that Floor can do anything (if singing for NW was not enough), and recreates a song. This is what she did here, and what she will do for Sleeping Sun (I already recorded the reaction vid, for this one). She is a GREAT singer. Tarja has the priviledge to be the groundbreaking diva. They cannot be replaced; they are the first. They have a unique place in the historiy of RnR !

Hello Guylain. There are a lot of reactions to Nightwish on KZfaq. But I noticed that young guys usually focus on picture, background and don't go into essence of song, poetry. And there are some channels where older guys (and you too) analyze all subtleties of song and you feel emotion and energy of song. Those kinds of reactions are most interesting to me as a viewer. Thank you! This Finnish band has been a favorite of mine for over 20 years. Tuomas in 1999 performance is not just focused, he is almost in a semi-conscious state. As he said himself, he could barely contain himself from fainting from excitement and fear and from throwing up. It was their first appearance on television and immediately on main channel in Finland. Before that they had only one live show in their hometown of Kitee where they recorded official video for song "Sacrament of wilderness". During previous year Tuomas and Empu were doing their compulsory military service, and they had no opportunity to perform in public. Most comfortable in front of cameras is Tarja, who is used to public appearances as a student at Sibelius Academy.

Wellwell, Guylain, a threesome. As i and you said before, Nightwish is not a metal band, than something greater beyond. You are absolutely right about the live performances. The1999 show is a remarkable good take by the young shorthaired band. Tarja had dark and majestic vocals there. The 2018 performance is a take from a seasoned professional musicians. Floor is the best allround singer in the world, but she's not at her best with the dark operatic tones. Although she did them very well. Thank you and see you soon!

I grew up with Tarja's interpretation and it will always have a important place in the memories of my youth. But 20 years later, the band with Floor revitalized the song. It is current and metal and everything this song should be 20 years into it's journey. Maybe they would have gone there with Tarja but we will never know and I really think they would have not. So the 1st version was perfect back then, the 2nd version is an even better fit for now, in my humble opinion. PS Yes I also think that all Floor's versions are more natural.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 3 жыл бұрын
Well the question of being "natural" is always asked to "opera" and lyric singers. There are "maniérisme" habits that I don't like at all; sometimes it feels "artificial" or non natural. Tarja does not suffer from that. In show, I have seen her being very natural as well!

This is real Nightwish for me. Instrumental side were great in older songs. Now there is too much... hmm musical showing off. You know - there is a lot of art for art. This is for me H:N album. Too much singing acrobatics and weirdness and too few good music. Off course there are good parts but no single song of H:N is perfect to me - some parts I would skip. "Oceanborn", "Wishamaster" and "Once" are perfect. And I also prefer Tarja over Floor in the older songs. Buenos isn`t my fav show. Love Wacken, Wembley and Tampere but when I listen to Buenos`s "Slaying.." or "Dead Boy`s..." my teeth hurts. These song need strong voice of Tarja. Maybe I am old and there is huge sentiment to old times.

The artists, the one who broke into new grounds, are unique. The NW of 1998-1999, they did that. Nobody else made their history. Groundbreaking artists are irreplaceable. As you know, we are bound to disagree on H:||:N., because, to my taste, it ranks in the Top-5 of my life, with the greatest albums of the prog Golden Era (Yes and Genesis). When complexity is needed, let it be! Complexity with a purpose (and not for itself) is masterpiece. This being said, we cannot say that Gethsemane is not complex. It is. But, let's keep our common love for the NW of these years. There, we completely, and wholeheartedly agree.

I may agree but.. I hate NW fans common opinion that NW is messiah of music. Listening to H:N I think that the band heard that opnion and believed. To much for me. Music is music and should be enjoyable at first. Of course everyone has other taste but I see in this album some strong pressure to be unique. Unigue and greastest above all. Only "Heart" is written... hmm in relaxed way. And the last but most important. NW started from playing opera power metal. Now they are created as the greatst symphonic metal band of all times. That`s untrue. There were greater sm bands when NW started. Even now after those passed years. Yes NW were unique and still is but the same was Therion, 2000`s Within Temptation. THESE bands broke into new grounds. Tuomas is great composer, same as Christofer Johnsson - his "Theli" and "Vovin" made genre when NW started to understand the futher way. Ok. I love Tarja and Floor. But I prefere old music of NW and old music of Floor (AF). Sometimes 2x2 isn`t 4. H:N is awsome but as some manifest. Technical great job but there is a lot of albums that give me more joy and more reflection. Yes. I love NW but I am not unctritical.

Perfect thread. Let's express disagreement in a positive way : by bringing food for thought. I understand and agree with most of what you say @Draagnipur. One point I disagree with you : the fact that you feel concerned or prefer old NW might be caused by many things : the topics of the songs, the artistic direction of the album, etc. Personally, I resonate 100% with the topics and the music of Human.:||: Nature. Content and style. For me, and for many others, some of the songs are among the very best of their lives (Shoemaker, Endlessness, Procession, etc.). While we can recognize that I am more "touched by one album than another one", even of the same artist, it can be because of very personal reasons. Objectively, in term of musical and poetic mastery, the NW of 2020 is far better that the one of 1999; that does not mean that the songs connect with their fans and/or with the general public. From where I stand, in Canada, I think that HN is an album that could have open the doors to America, but with the COVID.... I am not sure anymore. In a period of crisis, people tend to go back to the "good oldies".

Then something was happend and came: "Aegis", "Enter", "Vovin", "Wishmaster", "Beyond the Veil", "Decipher" and "Lake of Sorrow". These albums turn me into metal - my beloved ones. Everyone of them is very unique.

@@draagnipur8767 Always interesting to find out about the background of listeners. When nostalgia kicks in! Us old fans we all love our Tarja! Nightwish are very interesting! People like me that were not familiar with that type of music were plunged in a new world. The only similar bands I knew at that present time were Therion and Rhapsody. Therion brought me in but they are not part of my daily playlist. I still occasionally listen to Theli and Vovin. Coming from the side of metal with more aggressive tendencies I was not too much into the Gothic Metal scene. Some people close to me had other classifications for that style but I will not talked about it... Seeing Nightwish them live in Montreal was perhaps my peak moment for that genre. I know Nightwish are not Gothic Metal. As for the old versus the new I am torned and in way I do not have the sentiment for uniqueness and perfection. I have preferences that resonate in oneself but I also am critical to both the nostalgia and being in the present. Oceanborn is perhaps my favorite but it changes.To me getting older printed in me a sense of eclectism. To me there is no such thing as perfection we are flawed individuals and Oceanborn is part of that story. The old and not so old fans of Nightwish can choose the Era they want the old bombastic epicness or the later periods that incorporate more gymnastics and complexity but I still need two more solos!!!!Hihihi!! Complexity and awkwardness are no problems in my agenda because I to listen to prog but my tide goes to bands like Dream Theater, Opeth and Persefone. They have the wankery, the too much feeling, impossible time signatures but like I said no one is perfect. Everybody has favorites! That what makes this band special so special then and now. I took a distance over time and nostalgia. That's just me. I love both Floor and Tarja. Tuomas Holopainen is not the new Mozart or the Kwisatz Haderach. He is just a shy guy with talent and hardwork who showed is music to the world just like all is predecessors. He is for me a craftsman. Goodnight! Rock On!!

Even though I know this song was written to feature Tarja, I think Floor could have done a better job by interpreting it. I cannot feel any true emotion sent by Floor in her performance. The lyrics is perfectly aligned, written to last longer over decades, but it's emotional and Floor does not seem to openly express such emotional charge. I think this song is a good example of how outrageous is trying to make Floor replace Tarja in fans' imaginarium. Floor is really amazing in her vocal and stage performance, but making her cover Tarja feels like reopening older wounds.

Of course 24 weeks of one band would be too much even for the hardcore fans, but that is understood, and a break is coming before Christmas. Surely there are scores of wonderful bands out there to delve into, like WITHIN TEMPTATION, XANDRIA, EX LIBRIS (with some luck going to become the best of them all, with their Prog structures topped by voice of a Diva)... AMBERIAN DAWN, EDENBRIDGE, LEAVES' EYES, VISIONS OF ATLANTIS... and we are not even leaving the female-fronted Symphonic land yet. You are a bit harsh. The lyrical singers, by trade, pronounce English (and any other language) in a different way to keep the larynx open. Only Italian and Latin can be sung naturally with the throat and the mouth fully open. Coupled with the Finnish accent (some vowels are pronounced in an unexpected way), it is understandable. To me, there is nothing that surprising.
