We did actually hear him before, just in two (and three!) part harmonies. We've seen some older songs change in live versions to accomodate more of those harmonies ever since Floor and Troy joined, and it's nice to see Tuomas put it to good use on an album.

This entire album is a masterpiece. My only objection with this album is, it’s to short!!! Both CDs are amazing and I’m driving my husband crazy because I listen to it everyday. It doesn’t matter if I’m listening to CD 1 or 2. When the end comes, it feels like I’ve only been into the album for a short period of time. Tuomas is such a genius that he has managed to change the perception of time while listening to this album

HellStr82 no one. You are absolutely right. The music is not just music. There are so many levels to understand within each song. It’s like reading a book, a poem, with the perfect soundtrack but it’s not just the words telling the story. The music is as well. It’s multi dimensional

Happily, I have an EXCELLENT pair of headphones and enjoy the music in my leisure time. I always say something : "I prefer listening a great album 100 times, than listening 100 forgettable albums." I know this video is old. I have watched it and your reactions / analysis of the songs on this album many times. You strike me as someone with a child like joy in good music. Truly I find myself realizing that I would love to sit down with you and have a great informed discussion about Tuomas' poetry in musical form. This entire album strikes me like The Wall, Tommy, Aqualung, Moving Pictures. It is up there with some of the best concept albums I have ever heard. The depth of meaning and feeling evoked by Nightwish on a regular basis album after album has been one of the great musical journeys of my time here and I have loved it dearly. Music is my therapy. From a hard day, frustration, and the stress of modern life, music is my escape. I love nothing more than after a hard day, when my Daughter has finally gone to bed, toss on my headphones, grab something to help me relax be it alcohol or marijuana in moderation. Then just sit back and take my mental hands off the wheel and see where the music takes my mind. Thank you for your time and posting your love of music. The world needs more of it. To see people enjoy, and think, and wonder again it fantastic.

A great reaction to a great ending of an overall fantastic album. It's fitting that the song is both about endings and beginnings, even specifically for the channel as this marks the end of the first era but another one will be born in a couple of months. I'm looking forward to your lyrical analysis to see if you found nuggets that I have missed, and the overall review will also be interesting. As for the mentioned next phase of Nightwish analysis I'm sure we'll get to the details when we're getting closer to it, but I'll still throw in a suggestion of that it may be interesting to delve into the past through live performances. Despite that Nightwish has such complex music they are still even better live in my view, especially during the Floor era, as they are exceptionally tight in their performances and you can see how much they enjoy playing in front of a crowd. We still get all the musical (sometimes expanded upon when it comes to older songs) and lyrical content, but with even more energy.

I was looking forward to your reaction to this song for SO long! It's spectacular, and one that is so beautifully poignant. This album really distilled the essence of the band in an incredible way. I don't think I've ever had so MANY songs that were so deeply emotional, with such grand musical talent that I was moved to tears on MULTIPLE occasions! But if anyone would manage, of course it would be Nightwish. They do a magnificent job of speaking from soul to soul, spirit to spirit. It requires little translation for me, especially this one. What astronomical talent. I was so pleased to see your expressions of joy in reacting to this video, because I feel precisely the same way every time that I listen to the song. Magnifique, chere Frère. Magnifique.

After listening to this epic story at least thirty times over the last couple of days, I had to come back to your reaction a couple of times too. This song or compostion, is a spiritual and physical experience for me. It truly is. As the energy space in me expanded into endlessness, my breath changed opening up the upper part of my lungs. I never experienced anything like this with music. You mention the arriving at peace. Yes. True for me too. When i was walking today, listening again to the song I also came to the point where I felt I had to go and watch your analysis. Which I will do after posting his comment. My longest comment ever on YT. Feeling how my breath is still full an deep I realise you're right. Time slows down. Even seems to stop into Endlessness. Watching you experiencing this epic work moved me to tears. What a great thing to watch a spiritual work in the presence of a monk. Thank you.

Way too late, but thank you sir. I did not feel something about regret...it's in my opinion about litterly endlessness in micro and macro level. For a human and for the universe. Death speaks in this song, (tomorrow someone is waiting for me, an unborn child, as soon we are able to speak we are in a lottery, some go sooner than others. That, in universe, we arelikedust, but precious and rare. But the beauty of NW is that everybody, with his or her background and personality, can feel different things in their songs. It's a very dark but beautiful song. It's also a beautiful message that death is the beginning of everything. Merci beaucoup monsiour!

Cher Guylain! Merci beaucoup! What a masterpiece, one I've watched and listened many times over. And because of our language barrier, I had resisted watching your dissection of this most incredible piece of music, composed by the ultra music master, Tuomas. Having said that, I will say that I truly enjoyed your video and paid close attention to you simply because I was so interested in what a cleric had to say about the extremely deep meanings within the lyrics. And as a huge fan of Marco's immense talents, I was so glad to see your elation over his unbelievable interpretation of this incredible work of musical art. Looking forward to watch your lyric video of Endlessness. Thank you so much. A new fan.

Thanks, Gary! To be frank, I am not a very "standard" cleric. In fact, as a friar, we have a different point of view on things and life. If Francis of Assisi ring a bell to you, it might give you an idea on how I am very different. Moreover, a metal-head and Franciscan, this is quite a unique blend to my knowledge! In the whole world, we are... 2,3, maybe 5 ? As for Marko, I declared many times my appreciation for his voice, his bass playing and his performer's abilities. I REALLY like him!
@gmanwaseverywhere2104
@gmanwaseverywhere2104 3 жыл бұрын
@@GuylainPrince Thank you for your rapid response and for the record Friar, you, I'm sure, are so much more holier than I am, regardless of your religious designation. Having said that, I just finished watching your entire video of your interpretations of the lyrics of Endlessness and found them to be so enveloping that my mind lost all concept of time. Tuomas to me is a musical giant of our generation, and more, not only in his ability to create such musical majesty, but in his obvious intelligence and deep understanding of life itself and how we as humans "exist, evolve and pass through the flow." This is such a fascinating subject to me and makes me regret I hadn't found Nightwish many years ago, as I am now 77, and unfortunately fighting cancer. So, for obvious reasons, Endlessness (the entire Human Nature collection of music, actually) has understandably drawn me into it's sobering and mind bending deep meanings. Thank you, friar Guylain. I'm glad I found you.

My wish is that I can get to the Province some day. I’m 63. I saw Genesis during the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Tour. We have tickets for NW in NYC in September, but I am sure it won’t happen. We were going to meet the band. Sigh. Hopefully we can stay in touch. Peace and thanks.

Oh, what a nice word from you Lorie. I so appreciated your presence at the première and your kind words here. Close to one million French Canadian immigrated in the NE of USA at the end of the XIX and beginning of the XXth centuries. We are a significant part of what is now called New England. Even if NY is only 8,5 hours from Montréal, I visited the city for the first time last fall (only three days) and loved it. If you come to Québec, let me know! Peace to you.

When I was young my mother wondered why all my best friends were so very different from me. Today, at around 40 years old, all my best friends are still very different people from me. That's just how I like it, and that's why I think I've enjoyed your videos so much. The honesty in the good and the bad (Tribal is my favorite song of the album), creates what feels to me like a connection to you as a person. I think there's great value for everyone in being able to create connections like that, connections between people so fundamentally different. My praise to you for that ability, your thoughts and the entertainment.

Then, I thought I would do this for 30-50 French Canadien!!!!! The quality of the comments comes also from the quality of the commentators. Thank you for your reactions and analyses of all te songs on this album. Nightwish is the most amazing band ever! You have a pleasant "peacefull" voice that is nice to listen to. I hope you will continue to do reactions to some older Nightwish songs. Nice to hear you want to do reactions on Epica songs now. Aside from Floor of Nightwish and Epica, we have other great symph metals bands in the Netherlands like Delain (who sings several songs with Marco from NW) and Within Temptation. I strongly recommend: "Epica - Sancta Terra (feat Floor Jansen) Live Retrospect show", "Delain feat. Marco Hietala - Nothing Left (Live)", "Delain ft. Marco Hietala - The Gathering - Masters of Rock" , "Delain feat. Marco Hietala - Sing to Me ( Official Lyric Video)". Warm regards from the Netherlands!

There are so many things to reflect on. 1. This album is a contemplative spiritual odyssey and a rollercoaster of a journey 2. The previous song 'Tribal' saddened you, yet your response refocused my faith yet did not diminish the music. There must be others like me, no? I keep thinking of Luke 15:3-7 and I wondered at times, who was the sheep and who was the shepherd. 3. When you listen to 'Endlessness' straight after Tribal, it closes out the journey in the brightest possible way. More a stroke of genius than a faux pas? 4. I find the lyrics "Someone in the tomorrow is waiting for me" the biggest message of hope I have probably heard for a long time for anybody feeling lost, despondent or weary. Stay safe, keep well.
@GuylainPrince

Here it is. I still think that "Tribal" focused on religious "tribes", and that is a missed opportunity for exposing "new tribes" and bad leaders (scientific, political, economical, etc.) in present world. But it is, it has meaning within the album, yes. I agree. But, hey\, I am bound to comment from my point of view! :-)

Well, a reviewer is nothing but a "professional opinion" on a certain type of art. The key is to find a reviewer looking for the same things that you look for. If his criteria are not the same as you, you will end up with music that you don't like (or movies, or TV shows). I will only be relevant for you if you agree with my criteria.

@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 4 жыл бұрын

Well, Marco is not the main singer of the band, that was always a female. But he has a band of his own, with his brother. It's called Tarot (yes, like the divination cards, started out as glam-metal, then more and more to classical Heavy Metal and Power Metal). But he does have a few songs, where he sings most or all: "The Islander", "Kiss while your Lips are still Red", and "Planet Hell", and he is the male part in their "Phantom of the Opera" (yes, THAT Phantom of the Opera, but with their first singer, Tarja Turunen), and male/chorus singer in a majority of their songs (well, that is apparent, I'd say). He also recently released a personal album with a song called Isäni Ääni, meaning "Voice of my Father". By the way, another band to check out, where the drummer Kai Hahto is also a part is Wintersun. It's more intensive, but also fairly impressive. "Sons of Winter and Stars" or "Land of Snow and Sorrow" are two of their best songs, and their leader, Jari Mäaenpää has also released/composed his own version of Vivaldis The Four Seasons (obviously metal-influenced, of course). But, about your 10 songs from... Nightwish has, by now released 9 albums (including Human. :||: Nature.), so that would barely be a song per album. Epic has 7 (I think, I'm not sure if Holographic Principle is the latest anymore). At times, I wonder if 10 songs are really able to convey the depth of a bands progression. For instance Nightwish has, on some albums a tremendous diversity, on others a pretty straight line of progression. Picking just one would either narrow them down, or become out-of-context...

First, let me thank you for being such a great companion and a guide through this musical masterpiece, pleasure to learn new views, opinions and to listen to all of that in beautiful French language. I like to think that Floor - as a masterful voice teacher herself - actually helped Marko reach new limits with his voice ability throughout the years. I am aware that he was more than accomplished vocalist even in Tarja times but still, I like to think that she is a great influence for evolution of his voice and singing abilities (maybe even for Troy´s on this album). For the suggestion of 10 songs, it may be actually very hard to pick only 10 from the vast library of Nightwish for me. Luckily I am sure that Nightwish Army will find a consensus and the final list will be awesome. However, two spots must be guaranteed no matter what in my opinion: The Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth, two unique musical experiences that go far beyond the word "song" and are clear proofs that calling Tuomas just "songwriter" is wrong since he is defnitiely more of a "composer".

To be frank, I have the same feeling, since I can hear a real improvement in his tone. Don't forget that I am a choir director. Part of my job was to make sure the chorists were at there best. Few pointers to an accomplished singer, so that he keeps is voice in good health, is sometimes good enough. His voice improved, this is undeniable.

string instruments and bodhrans may change tone in different weather conditions, but the effect on wood and brass instruments is much larger. The frequency of the tone is directly dependent on the velocity of sound, which depends on temperature. The difference is about 3% for 20 degrees celsius, the difference between roomtemperature and bodytemperature. That is why you need to warm up the instrument before a concert, otherwise the tuning of the wood instruments will change half a semitone during the concert, but not the string instruments. It is also why the string instruments are tuned to the wood instruments (and not a electronic device) before the concert.

Excellent comment! For the bodhrán, it is a matter of tuning, but also tension on the skin. It reacts very badly to dry/damp weather. To the point that the skin becomes very "dull" sounding. And tuning a bodhrán on the fly... almost possible.

Guylain: I know we'll probably never agree on "Tribal" - and I'm sorry if we got off on the wrong foot, as we say in England - but your expressions in this video are PRICELESS. It is the perfect end to a challenging - and sometimes provocative - progressive masterpiece of an album. I have been lurking throughout the experience. I have enjoyed witnessing your reactions and analyses of each track. I might not come to the same conclusions as you regarding lyrical interpretation and artistic intent, but I commend and salute you for your depth of knowledge and skill in putting forward your arguments. Are you familiar with Scottish comedian Billy Connolly? If you had more hair (I don't have much either) you could easily pass as him. That's a compliment, by the way. 😉 As for Endlessness, I have put forward my opinion on other reaction channels that (particularly in the chorus) I could imagine British rockers Muse playing this. I look forward to sharing my favourite Nightwish songs with you, in the hope that they make your list for appraisal. All the best, Chris 🤘

I told you that Endlessness would be back on track! I hope Tuomas redeemed himself? I had to laugh when you complained there was no Marko on the album! They saved the best song for him in my opinion. As you say, ethereal, space, its all there. I don't *think* that this is a show ender, but I think its "the one before the encore", and I expect that you will hear the whole crowd singing it. How can one song bring such melencholy, despair, joy and hope all in one package? Another song I cannot listen to without a tear. I love the blend of the word "life" into "endlessness" between Floor and Marko. The words are so poinent when sung by Marko, "tip the the reaper to ensure, the blade is sharp, as soon we'll go" Looking forward to the analysis, particularly...who is the thief? As usual there are several options (probably depending on how you are feeling when you listen!) Once more I have thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. See you at the analysis!

For the Thief : take the whole first paragraph as the description of the same reality. And think of the 5th song.

@@GuylainPrince OK, since you prompted me early! My treatise is not complete! There are two most obvious candidates that can be considered the greatest thief in all of human story telling, *Time* and *Death*. Both function very similarly. Taking Death as the most obvious, and the stream reference in the first paragraph, we arrive at (river) Styx. This Greek godess would fit well given the potential planets (pantheon) references in "Procession" and the early Pan reference both to the Greek pantheon and to story telling itself. The "Tip the Reaper" line is a give away, as The Grim Reaper is the classic anthropomorphic personification (thank you Sir Terry Pratchett) for death. As this album is about story and human nature, the reaper fits well hear (it's also a "Harvest" reference for the same reason). Using Time as the interpretation leads us roughly to the same place, but with a looser interpretation on some of the lyrics. Other appealing interpretations to explore are Extinction, Idleness and Gravity (I wish I could remember who to credit for suggested this one). Of these I find Gravity the most compelling. Gravity keeps us in the "Goldilocks Zone" (GSoE reference), gives us day and night, the tides of the sea and the moving positions of the stars (and ofc the stars themselves instead of "dust with *no* meaning). With no property of attraction, none of this would be. Of course, gravity is a thief too. The blackhole is an ultimate universal thief, from which nothing (poetically, I'm not going into hawking radiation, information theory, etc, etc). There is an innevitable gravitational field or "stream" towards it. Get too close and it becomes innevitable. Other than the big bang / or reversal of which, the backhole is the ultimate ending point for matter. Poetically speaking all matter collapsing back to one singularity and then exploding in a new big bang is the ultimate in endlessness. Perhaps this is not the "true interpretation", but it is definitely one worth contemplation and meditation on. Looking forward to seeing your thoughts!

Salut Guylain! This song caps the album off so well. To me 'The Thief' is entropy, and this song finishes with the heat death of the universe, i.e. the end of everything. In a lot of ways, I'm finding myself thinking of this album in a similar way to Pink Floyd's Division Bell album, which was capped off by High Hopes (which was ironically my introduction to Nightwish), i.e. the album could be a capstone to a phase of a band's evolution. I just hope that this doesn't pressage a 20+ year gap....

@@GuylainPrince I'm not that good at pedagogy, but here is a good video, that explain the creation (and death) of stars. Just think about how many elements we have(periodic table). All our sun can create is Helium, from the fusion of Hydrogen. Heavier elements have to be created through bigger/different stars, and through supernovas. In an endless cycle... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fqqjoJxhrtOzd2g.html
