Master Passion Greed is dedicated to Tarja Turunen's husband and manager Marcelo Cabuli. According to Holopainen, it's the heaviest song in the band's history.[10] When he wrote the song, he brought all the anger the band has experienced over Turunen's split into the music. Olzon was originally supposed to sing the song. After the band debated the song and lyrics, Hietala interjected that it would be unfair for Olzon to sing the song as an uninvolved person. That is why Hietala's voice can be heard in this song.[7] Holopainen has already announced that the song will not be played at concerts because his feelings today are no longer consistent with the lyrics.[16] The song was composed entirely on guitar by Holopainen.[ from WIKIPEDIA

My favorite angry song. I love the heavy riffs that Emppu brings, Jukka trying to kill his drum set and Marko who not only plays nice riff but brings his angriest vocals ever. The growing sound of the brass and the choir in the end is like no other song. This is pure rage made into an awesome piece of music.

totally agree with you. Sometimes, people focus on Tuomas alone and do not consider how the whole band had to deal with the situation. Your comment in that regards is perfect. The contribution of ALL is exceptional and I think that ALL gave their best shot for that song. To express what they lived.

It's been awhile Fr. Prince but what a way for me to reaquaint myself with your amazing analysis. Master Passion Greed is actually one of my favorite songs from Dark Passion Play because it feels so brutally honest. Yes it's about Tarja's husband and it's angry and unapologetic in that rage. There's also the pain of betrayal too. I've always loved the way Tuomas composes and he's absolutely brilliant, but sometimes it's as if he's somewhat aloof though not in a negative sense. With MPG I feel like he's letting us inside of himself which is a pretty vulnerable thing to do. Add to that, Marko pretty much rage screaming vocals from his own feelings of anger and it was like seeing Nightwish in a different light. I understand why they'll never perform it and honestly, they don't need to.

12:06 - “what this puts into music is not familiar to me” I think that’s exactly how Tuomas felt! He did not know how to deal with all these feelings that were bubbling away - so he did the deep dive into his art and conveyed it in the song. I think the song was for himself not for anyone else

That might be it. This song was ex-pression : pressure to get something out of him (and of them). And once it was "created", they were moving to something else already. These emotions are not him anymore. But they are part of his history.

Thank you again for insightful analysis! This song inspired by primitive emotions leads us to deep water in human psyche. I was originally not a fan of this song. I felt a kind of sense of shame of unintentionally looking behind the scenes. But now starting to see it more like as a musical “case-study” of human feeling and behavior in conflict. Although the song is very subjective and expresses deep anger, the song writing and composing process, including the melody lines for numerous instruments, takes months. You cannot be angry for months. So therefore, I assume that the songwriter has in some stage taken the perspective of documentarist. He cannot omit this phase that was important for him and the whole band. He wants to be brutally honest. It best serves the healing process.

TOTALLY AGREE! The last section of the song shows the intricate capacity of Tuomas to "build in music" something coherent and confusing at the same time. This is a GREAT song.

The sound of absolute fury and rage perfectly packaged. The production and mix of this song is outstanding even if the subject matter is not for everyone. Guitar riff upon guitar riff, thunderous drumming and a berserker sounding Marko. It really is an unusual sound for Nightwish although pieces of Poet and the pendulum and Bye bye beautiful have a similar emotional response. Mind you they did come close to this type of emotional over load on the Human/ Nature album with the songs Noise and Tribal despite some fans feeling the album was not heavy enough.

I used to always skip this song too. And I like how you explain that it's because the rage in it is not as familiar. But the older I get, the more I think I have an appreciation just for the raw emotion and expression in it. By the way, I really appreciate how you use the chiastic structure to describe the song with ABCA'B'C'. It makes so sense!

Structure in composition / text is my specialty in text analysis. But you have to know that it is also an easy way for musicians to understand the structure of a song. By patterns. Patter A = verse structure (and chords progression). That way, you learn patterns and a short word (AABABCDBB), hence, the name of a song by Genesis : ABACAB. Peace!

I would say this : the artistic part of the song is understandable for me. The human part as well. I can "understand", it does not mean, like I said, that I would listen to it constantly. But once in while, it makes perfect sense to me! And I love it (artistically, I have no problem with it).

Guylain, thank you for analyzing this album. This is actually one of the few albums of NW that I don’t know very well, except for TPATP. So I hope I will find the time to enjoy your thorough analyses. I really liked your past The Warning and NW videos. A question: do you know the Ukrainian band Jinjer and have you considered analyzing songs from them? Tatiana, the singer, is not only a phenomenal vocalist, she is also a very talented lyricist. Highly recommended. If you are interested I can give you a few suggestions. However, they are far heavier than everything I ever watched on your channel, so not sure if it’s your cup of tea.

I sometimes wonder if Tuomas would have preferred keeping this song for himself instead of publishing it. 1) as this kind of rage is not an emotion that you sustain over longer periods of time. And now by it being published it kind of is forever there. 2) it could even be a hindrance in full reconciliation with a friend they knew from childhood.

Master, Passion, Greed is aimed squarely at Marcelo Cabuli. Tarja’s manager, come husband. She was a bad enough diva before meeting him. After he became her manager, he put it in her head that it should be "Tarja Turunen and the Tarja Turunen players, featuring Tarja Turunen." Marcelo was the Yoko Ono/Courtney Love of Nightwish 💙💙💙All Hail Floor !! 💙💙💙 Infantryman-Nightwish Army. US Regiment. Kentucky Battalion RIP Ann Waychoff-Commanding General-Nightwish Army

Next week Eva, we go from intensive anger, to a very beatiful song.. I have never seen a live version of this song, so to my knowledge, no it was never played live. And i know i did see a interview with Tuomas made a few years after the release of the song (album), where he said, it was anger for this moment, and something they passed in the band by now, so this expresion would make no sense to play for them anymore, as it was buried in the past by then.. and as someone else wrote, this song is directed at Tarja´s husband/Manager Marcello.

Hello friar! Hope you are doing well! Yes this song is full of fury and it sounds like a passage obligé to get a monkey of our back. The rythm is very thrashy with double bass that more the likes of bands like Pantera, Kreator or Children of Bodom. I love this style but for Nightwish as you said I enjoy it in a casual way. When this song comes on I love it but I do not listen to it everyday. To me context matters. To me it feels like a dichotomy over certain types of song. This song pushes the edge on emotions and can only be felt with a certain dose. The wounds canot heal if you often remember only the anger and hate. For some people anger is a gift but I understand that more fast paced songs like this one can overwhelm our ears. It's a hard punch to swallow. Nightwish fans know to whom this song is dedicated so I will not enter in this game. Periods of transition do have rough corners and it takes some time to recover. Water goes under the bridge and time can often heal... See you soon. I did not know you were doing Dark Passion Play. An album where I was still in a hiatus from listening to the band.

It is an expression of anger and powerlessness over Tarja's (then) new husband Marcelo Cabuli, who they felt had destroyed what they had in the band bga. his desire for i.a. money and desire to control the band, which ultimately led to them firing Tarja.
@johannessilver8653

This burst of anger of Tuomas can not be sung by Anette who is an outsider to that what just happened in NW. The reason for the song is the husband of Tarja and his influence on her to change her attitude into unwanted direction more far away from the band internal original chemistry. Marco is an insider (unlike Anette) and actually first who suggested that in loud and out that Tarja should leave the band cause he was the only one in the line-up who was not there in the very beginning and a founding member of NW. Fortunately today they (Tarja and Marco) hug each other (RJ Christmas concerts Ave Maria etc). Maybe they even make a duet song together in the near future.

The reason why there is no live version (at least with Floor, also I know Marco sings this) is because she is Tarja's friend and she doesn't want to perform this song or bye bye beautiful. Also Tuomas doesn't want to perform these songs because he sais that he isn't that person who wrote these songs anymore. Through these two songs (and also poet and the pendulem) you can see that how deeply Tarja's departure affected on him.

Regarding EVA. There is live footage from Anette, which was taken from mobiles with poor sound/video quality. So that would add nothing to Anette's splendid studio version. Afaik there is no live version from Floor either. So my favorite version of that song won't be from Floor nor Anette, but from one of Floor's former pupils, whom she gave lessons before joining Nightwish! In 2019 that girl, Susanne, finished her study to join her friend Thomas as a full time musician. Both were looking for more band members to become a full band. 2020 should be their year to start playing live concerts, however...the timing couldn't have been more worse. I didn't see them on concerts in 2022, so they may have switched into another career ?

Tuomas, lyrics with Marko? I wasn't expecting the "Speed Metal"! Ungrateful: "To bite the hand that feeds you" Mammon, money, greed. Svengali character, seduce her, destroy her, cheat her, deceive her. The band is not for the money (although that helps), but the artistic expression. Tuomas, the highly sensitive person (they all are), overwhelmed by the emotions.

This song it was my worst from the album for two reasons, first I didn't like the music itself and second reason was the lyrics, I felt Tuomas's pain and anger and bleeding with him. After years it became an album track and I listen to it with pleasure. How angry he was when Tuomas wrote the lyrics, Leech, Judah, greed, sneak, how much it hurt him to interfere with the group and their friendship, he was constantly at their feet, behind the scenes, in rehearsals, he was everywhere, you said something Quellain that the poet didn't speak and couldn't vent, you're right Tuomas was a closed guy, when he fired Sami Vaska the former bass player had the manager do it and immediately Sami went and found him and told him he had to do it himself and not to find out from third parties and Tuomas got angry with himself then, but he did it again with Tarja and Anette after, the same mistake. They had a court and Marcelo win and Tuomas promise to never played in lives this song if i remember well, so he keeps his promise. Bye bye beautiful it was for Tarja and Master passion:Greed it was for her husband. He couldn't speak directly but he can speak as an artist and he did it. He must somehow regretted after but the moments of angry and pain lives on with his music and DPP. I don't believe that exists the song EVA in live with NW but i remember that i found one live with Anette only , so sad because NW introduced her to their fans with this song. I am very happy for DPP journey Quellain , this journey took years after the album's release but i love it and i am still a huge fan of the album, so thank you!! See you next week, bye till then, peace my friend.
