Listening together to the whole album "Dark Passion Play". Since "The Poet and the Pendulum" has already been done before (LM 70 : studio.kzfaq.infouDuf...) we begin our journey with "Bye Bye Beatiful", the second song of the album. Listening together to the song, in two versions (studio-lyrics and live) by the symphonic metal band Nightwish. In the centre part of the video, there is an analysis of the lyrics and of the song.

Welcome back! One of my less favorite Nightwish songs. World needs more mercy and less hate. Difficult to say how much there is deliberate self-irony in the text, if any 😂

I agree with the general comment. This being said, the anger, the frustration after what is felt as an injustice is necessary. It has to come out. If not, it will poison your existence. Tuomas used the only means of expression he has : poetry and music. And, at doing that, it is extremely efficient.

With your return, the avg quality of reaction videos here on YT suddenly increased dramatically. No doubt it has the almighty algorithm puzzled, but your followers know why ;) After learning in the chat that you already reacted to ReVamp, I'm thrilled to check out your reaction(s) and analysis. Couldn't help but think of an analogy here: NW as a band lost, or kicked-out rather, their vocalist (Tarja) / a vocalist (Floor) losing an entire band (After Forever). And there's more than mere analogy in play here, since After Forever joined Nightwish in their 2002/2003 tour. By then, NW was already falling apart as a band and Floor witnessed first-hand the role of "Mr. Greedy" in this tragedy. I remember a 2006 interview with a well-known Dutch metalhead-website in which Floor had a thing or two to say about the man. The song here speaks abt the "long road" taken. Funny thing is that the same can be said in a positive way abt the long road - through much pain & hardship - taken by Floor to finally meet up with her "brothers in metal" again in 2012. Merci bien Guylain, for your analysis and reaction. Cheers/salutations from Amsterdam!

"You chose the long road but we'll be waiting" You're right, it's a very interesting passage and I also couldn't understand it for a long time. But still, Tuomas wrote it, so it must have meaning, he certainly thought it through. In the end, I started to follow such a track: Tuomas knows himself well, he also knows Tarja well, they have known each other since childhood, they were friends. The severance of these ties affected both Tuomas and Tarja very deeply. Tuomas expressed this in the songs we are talking about. But... Is it possible that even then, when the wounds were very fresh, and he wrote these songs, he still hoped for reconciliation in the future despite the pain, and expressed this hope in this passage? Who knows? And at the same time, knowing his character and Tarja's character, he knew that it wouldn't happen quickly, and that's why the long road ahead of them? If so, he was right, because so many years have passed and this reconciliation still hasn't happened. One more thing: why will "we" wait and not "I"? Who did he have in mind? The band that Tuomas identifies with, or more broadly, the band and its listeners who love him and would also like this reconciliation? I wonder. Great song, Anette and Marko shine in it. Especially Marko. Good choice of concert version, in my opinion this is one of the best live performances of Anette I've seen. Again, time well spent with you - thank you!

Hello Guylain. As always your song analyses are very detailed and interesting. I think everybody who is interested in Nightwish knows who main character of this song and "Master Passion Greed" is. You may be interested to know, but Tarja poured her emotions on paper too. On her first album, song "Enough" lets you look at firing situation through her eyes. Also in an open letter the guys called Tarja a diva, and later she wrote song "Diva". This song can also be considered a response to Tuomas' songs about Tarja and her husband Marcelo. I'm happy that you started to analyze Nightwish albums in their entirety. But it saddens me very much that you didn't pay attention to such masterpieces of first era as "Wishmaster", "Slaying the Dreamer", "Stargazers", "Sacrament of Wilderness", "Wish I Had an Angel", "Nemo", "The Siren", "Deep Silent Complete", "Elvenpath". It would be great if you could break down all the songs of this band. Their discography perfectly demonstrates how guys became more and more professional with each new album they recorded. I also really like power metal sound of their first albums which they later on moved away from.

@@GuylainPrince I don't know if that makes sense to me. Jacob Marley was a greedy man who only cares about his business that died. As a ghost, tried to warn/help his old friend and business partner Ebenezer so that Ebenezer wouldn't end up like Jacob. Ebenezer changes and becomes a better person. Jacob can be Marcelo because they were both greedy (at least in tuomas eyes) and the similarities stop there (he did not try to stop Tarja from becoming like him, instead he made her more greedy according to tuomas). Also it's worth nothing that Jacob the human (alive) was greedy but Jacob the ghost (dead) was trying to help the greedy Ebenezer to change. But I did not understand why putting a blindfold on a blind person makes it worse. It has no effect. They are already blind. Can you explain why you think it makes it worse in the song? The way I saw it was that Jacob's ghost is tuomas. Jacob's ghost was trying to make a greedy person change their ways. Tuomas was trying to warn/help his friend and business partner Tarja. But trying to help her had no effect. It was the same thing as putting a blindfold on a blind person - it does nothing! They're already blind! The gambler sounds like Marcelo though. "Are you so blind you don't see what he's doing to you?" Gambler's are greedy (like tuomas thinks Marcelo is. Look at master passion greed.) And he lost what he did not have (trying to dictate the business side of Nightwish and losing it all) I'm just not sure Jacobs Ghost is also Marcelo. Is there a reason you think Jacob and gambler have to be the same person?

Hello again Guylain! I didn't want to comment on yrics of this song until last. Musically it's great, but I don't like demonstrative aggression in this song and in Master passion greed. This song has already been discussed here a long time ago. But I'd like to add a little bit about these lines - Someday I'll learn to love these scars Still fresh from the red-hot blade of your words. I think everybody understands that these are famous words Tarja said to Tuomas on the plane, "Remember this, Tuomas, I don't need Nightwish for my career anymore. Remember this, Tuomas; I can leave the band with one day's notice, yeah, anytime. Remember that when you think about the future. I'm going to succeed on my own." I think these words struck Tuomas to heart. Nightwish is Tuomas' life's work, his raison d'être. Tarja was probably the last person in band he'd expect to hear that from. He's said many times she understands his music, his lyrics, and she conveys them beautifully. This is confirmed by recordings of last records, when Tarja recorded vocals in Karlsruhe, Germany, without any control of maestro. After recording she sent finished version to Tuomas via internet and we got great albums. I think Tuomas was sure that for Tarja Nightwish came first, too. About You chose the long road but we'll be waiting. For me this line could have a double meaning, considering Tuomas' transitional state from love to hate. These words could mean that we'll wait for you to come back, but also that we'll wait for you to fall down choosing your own path.

It is great to see you back, and with such amazing music as well! I really hope that you'll include the two bonus tracks from this album in your listening, as those are really great as well and deserve a listening on their own! These bonus tracks are called "Escapist¨ and "Erämaan viimeinen", with the last song technically being The Last of the Wilds, but then with the actual lyrics (in Finnish). There is a great video on KZfaq with the lyrics in both Finnish and an English translation.

My first language is Finnish, the second is English and the third is Swedish. You know many languages too. I think this is a message to Tarja that you didn't read what "Tuomas" wrote, didn't you listen to what the band played, etc. The long road means the solo career that Tarja chose. They are waiting at the end of the long road they have already reached. Flower "Tarja", the tree is the band. The gambler is Marcelo, Tarja's husband. Marcelo thinks he owns Nightwish and decides what they do because he's Tarja's husband, but that's not true. Even Tarja thought that she is Nightwish and without her there is no band.

It's not the tree that forsakes the flower But the flower that forsakes the tree Dumas, Alexandre, pp. 285 The Count of Monte Cristo Explanation and Reflection: The Count of Monte Cristo says this to the young Grecian girl who believes that she is one of his slaves, and this shows how important the Count is to all of his people that live with him that work as his servant or helpers. However, the girl, Haydee, has the opportunity to be free and go away from her tree, the Count, at any moment she likes as any tree does. This shows the Count’s wise virtues and wisdom. "You chose the long road , But we will be waiting" I think it might mean, You have chosen a long and time consuming arduous journey to make it in the music business on you`re own, But when you have, We will have achieved our goals without you The Ghost of Jacob Marley has no chance of redemption as he is in Purgatory for his lack of compassion to his fellow man. There is actually also a Whiskey brand called Jacobs ghost, but idk how excatly to put this into the contex either, being Drunk, fuzzy lol, idk. As always i do make sure i got my coffe before seing your reaction, it can take some time..lol, but i really like i get wiser, with the words meaning in it, and the conection to other songs, always get a new perspetive on the songs, watching you, thats cool... I think the Anette era is by far the era with most personel songs, i usaly try descibe the 3 era´s like this.. Tarja (Fairytale) Anette (Personal) Floor (Global matters) well you cannot totally box it like this, but it gives a good picture still, of what the diffrent front singers represent in song contex, i belive.

Welcome back. My take on this . . . I've always thought of this song as being one of the most emotional songs in their discography. They're addressing both the fans and Tarja, trying to reach the fans who see the band and in particular Tuomas, as the villain in the piece. They're trying to sell the band as the victim in the story after Tarja had already established herself as the victim. The lyrics alternate between a discussion between the band and the fans during the verses, and in the chorus, a rant by the band directed toward Tarja. On reading the first few lines I had the feeling about references to the blood of Christ, a form of crucifixion for the the entertainment of the fans. Tuomas has never been shy about tossing around religious allegories to make a point. Imagine the witnesses to the crucifixion losing interest once the initial drama of the planting of the cross is over. "Is that all there is?" They have invested themselves in Tuomas and the band "painting a dead man's face with their own blood" then they blink and it's over. They quickly tire of the spectacle and walk away. The references to a 'dead man' is a direct reference to Tuomas. He frequently makes references to himself as 'dead man' or 'dead boy'. The chorus repeats the band rant, but the verses transitions from addressing the fans in the first verse, to explaining the feelings of the band in the second verse, to finally in the third verse saying, "Don't blame us. It wasn't our doing." In the end it sounds like two lovers who separate, consumed in loathing for the other, then seeking validation for their feelings.

Hello Quelain, I'm glad you started dark passion play in my first day of my holidays. This song is one of my favorites, not only for its music but also for its lyrics. Years ago when I translated it I understood Tuomas' rage as well as his pain. The truth is that the beautiful woman, having the gambler as her personal manager, had high demands, forgetting that there were others in the band, the band is a company, there is the we and not the ego. Tuomas wanted vindication, his ego had been hurt, he believed that the beautiful woman would come back begging, she would part with the gambler soon repenting and feeling vindicated, he had warned her. This is what he believed or wanted to believe. On vocals Marco and Anette are fantastic, Anette's sweet clear voice and the harsh vocals of Marco are perfect match, the video clip has the most viewers from any other video songs of NW. In DPP tour BBB was always the opening song. I love the few good live concerts with Anette Olzon, mostly from festivals which i can see this song in live version with adding Anette's vocals in chorus. I agree with you Quelain,i know that you thinking that the ( he) Tuomas mentioned Marcelo as a gambler. A second song from DPP album is for Marcelo himself....Master passion greed but never played in lives. Those lyrics of DPP in my opinion expressed the last personal feelings of Tuomas and for this reason people loved the first two eras songs mostly, more emotional and personal to Tuomas Holopainen and more emotional to listener too. Century child (2002),Once(2004) and DPP(2007) are the most important album for me, the lyrics are my favourites,i feel the human Tuomas Holopainen as a man and not only as an artist. This album is dark like the title, has Tuomas pain, his revenge and his dark feelings but has a special beauty with plenty of ballads from Marco and Anette and the last of the wilds an orchestral song with folk elements, the second one after the moon dance from Oceanborn. The poet and his metaphoric death and an open letter through BBB lyrics are the two opening songs and it can't be in chance 😜. With great respect and regards, Anastasia.

And Jacob was greedy when alive, but as a ghost ("jacob's ghost") tried to help a greedy person to change (Tarja) but in the song he failed cus she was already blind.

I always enjoy reading comments and seeing different people's opinions on Tarja's dismissal. I really hope that one day Tuomas and Tarja will open their cards and we will know truth. Tarja's accusations of greed are most illogical to me personally. We know that successful bands make money from touring after release of a new studio album. Tarja wanted to cancel show so she would make less money and Tuomas wanted to make more show, meaning he wanted to make more money. It turns out that Tuomas is more greedy. Isn't he?

Hello Fr Guylain, we've missed you for a while. Some of your hard work got blocked, so frustrating. There is a story of "The Ghost of Christmas", Jacob Marley appeared in dreams of Ebenezer Scrooge... A chance to change his bad ways, by showing him the consequences of his actions. A link with "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck"? "He" the gambler could be Tarjas husband, who was very controlling in a Machiavellian way, often making deals behind her back. "Master, Passion, Greed"! "I" to "We", Tuomas to the whole band unanimously, signing the dreaded letter of dismissal. The music video is also quite fun, it fooled me completely at first, all the band were Beautiful women, then Bye, Bye, the band appears, to disappear again. Eight languages! Bravo Fr. Guylain.

Welcome back Guylain. The basic message of the song is not in doubt but Toumas likes cryptic references. Maybe it makes the song more interesting if you have to struggle to unpack things. I think the 'Hills' without eyes might refer to the cover NW did of the Gary Moore original (Over the Hills and far away). Its about a woman who betrays a man after spending all of his money. 'How blind can you be don't you see' lyric is pointing back to this i think. The song was a big hit for the band somewhere around 2000. There was also a horror film called The Hills have eyes' but i can't remember what it was about other than a family in the woods murdering innocent people. 'The long road' reference seems simple enough. The band intend to be bigger and better without Tarja and come the future we will see who is the winner in all of this. I still love Tarja and her music so i bare no malice towards her, but her leaving/fired from the band was the best thing that ever happened to them. It wouldn't have been obvious to anyone back in 2005/6 but in 2022 the band are more popular than ever. Might the 'Jacob' reference be to the Old Testament figure, Or maybe the film Jacobs ladder? Maybe my mention will lead to someone figuring it out. Nightwish lyrics can be frustrating to try to figure out but i think Tuomas purposely designs them that way. He gets a lot of things off his chest without actually telling you the details of what he is getting off his chest.

I agree. For "Jacob's Ghost", apparently, you have to look toward a Christmas tale : Jacob's Ghost is someone who has been very greedy, and because of that, he is still a ghost (does not go to heaven). He regrets it and try to "suggest" to Scrooge to behave differently. So take this for Jacob's Ghost : real / not real, trying to influence reality, has a greedy dynamic, ... etc.

I don't understand how putting blindfold on a blind person makes it worse. But if instead the lyrics are saying "trying to warn her when she is already blind is useless. @@tes33720 Tarja’s reply to the open letter states that she doesn’t see herself as the person described in the letter: she is therefore admitting to being blind. Tuomas is implying any influence that Marcello had was akin to being a blindfold for a blind person. Similarly the open letter states things have gone beyond a point of return for the band and that Tarja’s immediate departure is the only possible course of action. Tarja is almost literally ghosted. Any intercession now for her to change her ways would be like Marley visiting Scrooge after his death. The fact that they were obsessed with money adds a bit more spice to the analogy. Hopefully that clarifies my understanding of the lyrics.

@@adriannicholson3365 No, that doesn't help me, sadly. My main issue is if Jacob and the Gambler are the same person. Your comments suggest you belive "jacobs ghost"=tuomas and "gambler"=marcelo (Jacob is Tuomas trying to change tarja but it was too late). But then you flipflop and say marcelo had no influence (implying jacob=marcelo). Feels contradictory. Guylain is saying jacob and gambler is the same person (marcelo) which doesn't make sense to me. Like you said yourself, Jacob's Ghost tried to help Scrooge change so that Scrooge doesn't end up like him(jacob). If Jacobs Ghost = marcelo, then you are saing that Marcelo tried to help/warn her, that doesn't make sense. However, tuomas/the band DID try to warn her and they didn't like marcelo. "tuomas is implying marcelo had as much influence as blindfold on a blind person" that's just not true, though. This sentence means that marcelo had no effect on tarja, that marcelo did not change tarja. This is not what tuomas believes. Tuomas and the band blamed marcelo. That's very important. This quote is From the open letter: "Somehow Marcelo has changed you from the lovely girl you were into a diva, who doesn't think or act the way she used to. " they are literally blaming Marcelo for changing her. Tarja's reply suggests she's blind (after being fired) but it doesn't say she was blind before marcelo. In fact, it is well-known that tuomas blames marcelo for changing tarja. For "making her blind", if you will. It's even in the open letter. So yes, when she posted the reply she was blind, but it's because of marcelo. I see it this way: Marcelo walks into tarja's life. Changes her, "makes her blind/greedy". Tuomas/the band tries to warn her/change her (Jacob's Ghost trying to help/warn Scrooge) but it's too late, she is already blind. So it's like putting a blindfold on a blind person: useless. (Blindfold for the blind) so: Jacob's ghost (A person trying to help/change another) for the girl in white (the person he's trying to help is a girl in white. Maybe she's in white because she's already dead) Blindfold for the blind (Jacob trying to help the girl in white is like putting a blindfold on a blind person - it has no effect. He can not help her, it is too late) You said: "Jacob Marley’s ghost urges Scrooge to amend his ways before it is too late" If jacobs ghost = marcelo, then you are saying that Marcelo the one trying to help tarja before it's too late, but ultimately lost. But Marcelo didn't do that, instead tuomas blames marcelo for changing tarja. And Marcelo didn't "lose" (it being too late), tuomas/the band are the ones who lost (tarja) because it was too late.

I also was lost with the "You chose the long road, but we'll be waiting." Impossible to think they would have been waiting for Tarja's return to Nightwish. But could it be that Tuomas and the rest of the guys of Nightwish were so angry and therefore so cocky, to say that they were going to be better off, to do better, to be more succesful without Tarja than Tarja on her own, without Nightwish? We are way ahead of you. We'll be waiting to see if you can catch us. We do not think so. I read a comment at some point that led, directly or indirectly, can not remember, me to this possible interpretation.

Tarja is famous as the ex singer of NW. She never sing in full arenas like NW and she never sells so many albums like them. Her fans are mostly from NW especially from her era, NW continue to collect fans, so the meaning of the song has some right. Maybe Marcelo had many ambitions about Tarja and her solo career back then. In my beliefs Tuomas's ego needed mostly Tarja's return but without Marcelo so i can understand how deeply in love was with her, the long road maybe means many difficulties in her personal life also.

Welcome back Frere Guylain, I missed you!. This is a song that Floor will never perform because she is good friends with the addressee of it, Tarja. And the rest of the band is OK with it. I think the emotion that carries this song is the band's total confusion: How could someone who sang our songs, who interpreted those words, who carried those deep meanings for many years behave so contrary to everything we believe in and proclaim??? I think the "we'll be waiting" line is about the band being always ahead of that the Beautiful (who chose the long road) will achieve without them. This song written as a slight towards Tarja from Thomas and the band. Avoiding drama its enough to say that Floor Jansen the singer who replaced Annete was and still is good friends with Tarja and made it clear as a condition of joining the band for their tour that she will NEVER sing this song. I love that respect. Floor had already by this point been a frontwoman in a band. There were 2 before NW in 2010. Her officially becoming a member happened after finishing the remaining tour dates Anette had to leave when she went into labour over Christmas. I know there was a 2 year search for a 2nd singer before they chose Anette. They chose a more pop sound to suit her voice. Other reasons are mere speculation and gossip mongering. The bad blood though was very much in effect and on both sides. Well as they say, all things end badly. Otherwise they don't end. The ex bandmates have over 15 years mended fences. Best friends they are not. I take it that with exceptions like Marko, relations are polite if frosty. However every era of Nightwish has recordings be it albums or concerts that like an a LA carte menu you can pick and chose from whatever you care to sample. Then perhaps dive into a full course of. If you don't want the palmento loaf, try the nan bread instead. Also arguing which is the best/better is arguing personal taste. What objectively makes chocolate superior to vanilla ice cream if preferences removed? Like what you do. Like it for whatever reason you want to. Ignore what you don't for what ever reason you wish. Nightwish still out on tour and making music. Tarja doing the same. Everybody is fine and has done well. That is the best news.

This always sends cold shivers down my spine. And I'm not talking about that pleasent goosebumps I get with other Nightwish songs.
