Debian is a universal operating system that everyone can adapt to their needs. You can also use Debian with the popular Cinnamon Desktop. Cinnamon comes from the Linux Mint project. And here, in addition to the regular Linux Mint edition, there is also LMDE (that stands for Linux Mint Debian Edition). This is a full-fledged Linux Mint edition that comes with Debian as a base instead of Ubuntu like the regular Linux Mint edition. So now the question is what is the smart choice: Debian with Cinnamon Desktop or LMDE. In this video we explore this question and examine the necessary aspects that will hopefully help you make your choice.

I would recommend the following: To use as a desktop/laptop daily use OS, use LMDE because it's all been setup for you already and there is no configuration required. To use as a server: use Debian if you want to set up a server because it doesn't require a desktop environment and once you setup what you need, you don't really need to worry about updates and it just keeps working reliably. Personally I would install updates once a week but you don't have to if you don't want to.

definitely LMDE because it's the Linux Mint Team develops the Cinnamon desktop as their flagship DE.. so their Cinnamon DE isn't outdated or incomplete plus you will get better hardware support.. if I have to use base Debian then I would go for something very lightweight, either a lighter DE or even a tiling manager.

IF you're going to do CINAMON and you want DEBIAN base --- USE LMDE6-- It's ALREADY configures and set up- and you can STILL customize and change whatever you like later.. just common sense there. I have been on LMDE6 for a couple weeks now and LOVE it--(used it a LOT before- but slightly older version).. and I have distro-hopped for years- coming FULL CIRCLE back to MINT- but wanted the debian.. !!!

I used Mint for several years, last year I installed LMDE and Zorin on a laptop...I liked the LMDE. Then some weeks ago I got a problem with my VPN. I dont like to do a research so I thought do a new install. Then I took this LMDE insted of the Mint...and I did not notice any real difference. As a second, dual, I took the newest Manjaro, boy, that one is ok too. I am doubting but for the moment use the LMDE as my main Linux.

Love the Commodore CBM picture 🙂, that was my first real computer and I still have it. In the picture at 9:25 for Debian 12 there's Kernel 6.2, I'm not sure but I think that it's 6.1 by default. If you want 6.2 you have to install it by yourself (Which is a pity for Intel Arc GPU users...)

Debian 12 uses Kernal 6.1, not 6.2, hence why LMDE uses 6.1. So they both (obviusly) use kernal version 6.1

I had LMDE on my Dell Latitude E-6540 for about 3 months, during the 3 months my Laptop locked up in the middle of watching a video on YT. It would repeatedly replay a portion that had already played before and just kept repeating it over and over, no way to turn anything off, actually had to pull the Power supply and the battery till the Laptop stopped running.....! After it started up again, I quickly removed LMDE from the Laptop...! Do what you wish....... me, I'll do me......

Can you upgrade from lmde 5 to 6 or maybe 7 just like windows 10 to 11 or you need clean install?
@haplozetetic9519
@haplozetetic9519 6 ай бұрын
It is possible to upgrade from one to the next, but trying with older releases (LMDE 4 or earlier) is probably a bad idea. It is a good idea to use Timeshift to backup the system in case something goes wrong. If it does, Timeshift can restore the old system the way it was. It's also a good idea to backup your data as well, but both are your choice. To upgrade LMDE 5 to LMDE 6 (could take a few hours): Open the software manager and install all updates available or run these commands in a terminal: sudo apt update and then sudo apt upgrade Install the Upgrade Tool with: sudo apt install mintupgrade Launch the Upgrade Tool with this command: sudo mintupgrade When it is done, run the command: apt remove mintupgrade Reboot the system.

Simple Question !!! Why don't the linux distros put the exact name of the DISTRO - rather than just UBUNTU. There are dozens of good Ubuntu variants - but as a rule - they only list Ubuntu. In a multi boot system - this is challenging to identify.

Been there, done that. I go into the bios, and select the drive from there. If grub has multiple entries with the same name, it's trial and error until you remember which one boots which OS.

How is Cinnamon different from KDE from a user point of view?
@maxrobe
@maxrobe 8 ай бұрын
One thing that comes to mind is that Cinnamon doesn't have separately configurable workspaces. For example in KDE you could have a workspace which is for work stuff and a different one for games - which could look totally different than the work one. Also because Cinnamon uses GTK, its a bit hit and miss on whether thumbnails are shown in any particular applications file chooser dialog, (not Cinnamon fault as such, just the fact that most are all of the application you use will be GTK based).

KDE Plasma is much more powerful in terms of customization compared to Cinnamon, you can really customize almost everything. Cinnamon, on the other hand, is much more stable than KDE Plasma, at least in my use, Cinnamon has always been fast and has never presented a bug, but sometimes the KDE interface restarted when I was customizing it, in addition to presenting some random slowdowns on my pc, but nothing major either. This is because Plasma aims to be more resourceful and up-to-date, while Cinnamon is more slow to implement new features and aims to be very stable. When I talk about Plasma's customization, I'm saying that there are a lot of options, to the point where you can leave the interface basically the same as a Mac Os. This amount of customization is very good for users with time and who want to make an interface that looks like their own, but for some people, the amount of options can be complicated, if they want to use an interface that is different from the standard one that distributions set up. In terms of performance, Cinnamon is lighter, but this depends a lot on your computer, if your computer is "strong" you won't feel the difference between the two. In the end, I'd say that for the average user who has never used an interface other than windows and wants something ready-made without wanting to customize it or customize it very lightly, Cinnamon is a good option, but if you want to customize it to make an interface that suits the way you work, or want to make it something beautiful to look at, Plasma is a good option. I would say that I would install a Cinnamon Desktop environment for my father who has never used anything other than Windows and wants something stable to use on a day-to-day basis, while in comparison I would install something with KDE Plasma for someone who wants to customize the interface and has the time learn and to do so. I recommend that you test both on your PC, as what I've said above is my experience, which may be different from yours. I hope I've helped.

In Simple Words, Cinnamon is a desktop which provides a rock solid but old user experience, The customizations is a different thing, the main thing which a user should keep in mind that KDE is a modern desktop providing complete control of their desktop and promising functionality + design. While Cinnamon is just a solid desktop promising a never breaking and decent functionality and old design. Hence, KDE is a desktop Preferred by a casual linux user.

KDE has a lot more customisation options. For me it looks like they're not really useful for me so I prefer Cinnamon because it looks more beautiful for me and it's easier. Sometimes it's harder to customize something in KDE because it's too complicated for your needs. E. g. as I remember, there isn't an option to change colour accent in KDE easily.

Is It possible to install Bluetooth, Wi-Fi,Intell CPU and HD Graphics drivers using the Software Manager of the LDME?
@sergiogiacomosammartano7623
@sergiogiacomosammartano7623 2 ай бұрын
Normally, the drivers for the above hardware components are installed automatically at the time you install your distro, and they come shipped bundled within the kernel. I run the Ubuntu-based Mint on one of my laptops and I have also tested the LMDE on it, in both cases everything (Wi-Fi, printer, and all other peripherals) worked perfectly out of the box after the OS installation (only thing worth noticing here is, if you have a NVidia graphics card, you'll be asked to choose between proprietary drivers and open source drivers, you should choose the proprietary ones if you wanna play last-gen games on your machine, but even the open source ones run pretty well). After the initial installation, you can sometimes see standalone drivers updates available for your machine in your package and software manager, which you can install individually, or together with other updates. By far the simplest way to keep your laptop up-to-date, especially with the latest safety patches, is to run "sudo apt update", then "sudo apt upgrade" from your terminal now and then. I do this about once a week, and the OS takes care of everything else. PS: if there are updates available for your system, you will get notified by your software manager via a little red dot on its icon on the notification area of your task bar. You can then just click on it if you wanna use the graphical interface, but you can also just update via terminal using the apt commands.
