More like The first three volumes of the LN were "What Ayanokoji thinks others see him as", with the Year 1 Manga further making it much wackier than it already was, and only after the third volumes Kinu decides to make him more similar to how he is in the anime (except the lack of monologues obviously, but that's another story)

From what I've heard and seen I think it's Kadokawa not Lerche. The directors and storyboarders worked on some really high-profile stuff like Code Geass and Rezero and the episodes that aren't outsourced are really good. It's the outsourced episodes mainly that look pretty bad and adapt poorly.

Well, obviously, because books are generally more complex. Animes are usually adapted from the books (either Manga or Light Novels) and don't always have adapt everything (which is realistically expected). Anime can't adapt everything from the books of course. And sometimes the books need more content themselves (not too much skipping occurring in the story line) which can affect the anime or anything based upon it.

I dropped the anime after season 1 because I thought the MC is just basically a power-fantasy set in a more grounded world and anyone could insert themselves into him because of his lack of personality. Additionally, the anime as a whole felt like an intellectual version of One Punch Man but without all the fun. Now after you've explained the LN... I will still not watch the next season but I shall start reading the LN. The anime was really horrible at giving depth at any of the characters esp. the MC. Learning Ayanokoji's contradictions and aspirations, and how his nature contradicts these aspirations made the story 1000% more interesting than the edgy, flawless, robot we got in the anime. And in my personal opinion, Year 1 Manga exceeds the anime for the simple reason that they attempted to make the MC more interesting by giving him a facade personality that's similar to Kaito Kid from Detective Conan (Cased Closed). If done decently, this version could've been an alternate universe with a separate plot on its own.

In my personal opinion, and remembering my binge watch of the anime without any of the original source, it's so-so. I remember that I highly enjoyed and would definitely recommend to others since it's akin to Tomodachi Game and DN. s1 was a great introduction, I've rewatched it only once I think. s2 was awesome and s3 is just good. I find the manga, after the anime, extremely generic for all the lack of edginess you'd see in seasonal animes (the only edginess you see in them anyways is ironically one of the most expressive, stiff and low budget animes). Kaito Kid is cool, but vastly different from how the LN expressed it. The anime isn't special in anyway whatsoever, and it's been given to a producer and studio who feeds on money. My favorite quote in the show isn't even in it I think, but it's mentioned on one of the titles in s3: "Journal of Stendhal - to love is to make those you love happy", or something like that. So bonus points for philosophy, even if the staff put some love and care while it was rushed by broadcast timeslots

I've been reading the ln and there have been a couple times where I finished reading a chapter and was curious about how that scene would look animated, but I've usually been pretty disappointed after I watch it. From what little bits I've seen the ln looks way better, but I'll probably still give the anime a watch after I finish reading the series.

I'll just have to add that most of the details what you said wasn't in the anime unlike the Light novel, was in fact in the anime. It’s scuffed, u have to find the good translations otherwise u get MID scans. U can tell u have found a good translation when the images in the beginning have translated dialogue

My interpretation of the Manga (year 1) Koji is this is how he sees himself in his head. This is the persona he's trying and failing to convey. Having the other material, and viewing it that way, I don't mind Year 1 Manga Koji- but it is my least favorite interpretation of the character.
