LO SCISMA DELL’ANNO 1054

L’amministrazione dei beni secolari che la falsa “Donazione di Costantino” aveva concesso al Papato era servita a ottenere un’esperienza di governo volta a creare una vera e propria classe dirigente ecclesiastica in cui arruolare in modo transnazionale e meritocratico le migliori menti della Cristianità. Una di queste era il cardinale Umberto di Silva Candida, il borgognone Umberto di Moyenmoutier (1000-1061), inviato a Costantinopoli da Papa Leone IX poco prima della morte di quest'ultimo nell’aprile del 1054.
Il Cardinale legato portava con sé una bolla papale con la richiesta di obbedienza alle direttive della Chiesa romana, un documento in cui si affermava come questa Chiesa fosse l’unica ad avere la giurisdizione e l'autorità finale su tutte le altre e i loro rispettivi Patriarchi e si richiedeva che le "devianze" teologiche sulla questione del "filioque" e del celibato ecclesiastico dovessero rientrare.
Umberto era stato investito dal Papa Leone IX di ogni potere, un'autorità che poteva arrivare fino alla scomunica per chi avesse disatteso alle direttive di Roma. Il Patriarca Michele Cerulario (1001-1059) era il suo avversario, il capo religioso della più importante potenza del mondo, l’antico l'Impero Romano d’Oriente, il quale ambiva a vedersi riconosciuto un ruolo di parità nel governo della Chiesa con il Papa di Roma.
Il contrasto e l’incomprensione reciproca tra queste due figure di capi religiosi generò lo Scisma dell’anno 1054 e la separazione tra i Cristiani Cattolici Romani e gli Ortodossi, le cui conseguenze sono ancora oggi ben visibili e difficilmente sanabili.

The administration of the secular estates that the false "Donation of Constantine" had granted to the Papacy had served to obtain a governing experience aimed at creating a real ecclesiastical ruling class into which to enlist transnationally and meritocratically the best minds in Christendom. One of these was Cardinal Umberto of Silva Candida, the Burgundian Umberto of Moyenmoutier (1000-1061), sent to Constantinople by Pope Leo IX shortly before the latter's death in April 1054.
The Cardinal Legate carried with him a papal bull requesting obedience to the directives of the Roman Church, a document affirming that this Church was the only one with ultimate jurisdiction and authority over all others and their respective Patriarchs, and requesting that theological "deviances" on the issue of "filioque" and ecclesiastical celibacy should fall back.
Umberto had been invested by Pope Leo IX with all power, an authority that could go as far as excommunication for those who disregarded Rome's directives. Patriarch Michael Cerularios (1001-1059) was his adversary, the religious head of the world's most important power, the ancient Eastern Roman Empire, who aspired to be granted an equal role in church government with the Pope of Rome.
The contrast and mutual misunderstanding between these two figures of religious leaders generated the Schism of the year 1054 and the separation between Roman Catholic Christians and the Orthodox, the consequences of which are still clearly visible today and difficult to heal.
