Loading pigs for transport can be very stressful for everyone involved. Today we're showing you how easily we can separate and load pigs into a livestock trailer. As you'll see in this episode, it took 2 minutes to separate and load 4 pigs into a 2 horse livestock trailer.

All our pigs have names, and we tell them every day how much we love them and appreciate them being our food 🙏❤️

We tend to give a few of them names based on what they look like or how they act, but much like you we are VERY appreciative of what the provide to us and our customers. They only have 1 bad day on this farm.

That's the plan. We're not getting any younger and those pigs keep getting, well, more pig headed!

True statement, but not all farmers take care of their animals unfortunately.

I raised a hamp from a baby and she got mean. I wouldn't trust being in the pen with pigs. Just my experience. Your pigs are so chill 😊

Hey Jen! The 3 you're seeing with me here were definitely the calmest of the bunch. The Berks were the crazy ones for us this round and would like to come up and see if they could push you over every once in a while. Great to see you on the Livestream last night!

The wise farmer knows, pigs are the only animal to bite off the hand that feeds them. Our hamps were temperamental but the Chester White sows friendly. Tamworths, maybe 1 out of 4 was temperamental.

Great job, we like the simple yet extremely functional chute design that funnels the pigs into the trailer free of stress and thank you for sharing.

From day one I try to make friends with my pigs I know some just put feed and water out but don't socialize with the pigs I just think if you do things go so much better. I put a trailer out a week before the time for them to go. Your pigs look really nice you both have done a great job

We couldn't agree more Pam. They're such an important part to the farm and we really do enjoy spending time with them. Now we need to figure out a breed we can keep year round!

I noticed that of the three on the right of the screen one got round and into the van and another that was going to the van turned round and stayed in the farm. It really was random selection with the keenest heading off.

They all were moving in and out at the outset and then they cleared pretty good once we were moving around. I was a little surprised we ended up getting the 4 we were looking for so easily. They were the biggest of the 7.

silly question whats the quality of home grown pork like compared to super market? , i heard it cooks better is leaner etc...
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Great question William. The main difference is the flavor and it is exceptional. The fat content is usually a bit higher from what we've seen, but the fat is almost pure white in color and has an amazing flavor. It also marbles the meat which is one of the reasons the taste is far superior. Breed selection (heritage breeds like Berkshire, Hampshire, Chester White, etc) and the fact the animals are very active their whole lives are the primary reasons for the difference.

I live outside of Phoenix in the foothills and prepping for my first go at raising pigs in September. Have you ever had to set up protection (electric, etc.)for them against coyotes? I imagine this only applies early when piglets are smaller... thanks!
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Great question d B. We have not had to use any additional protection. But it will probably depend on the size of the piglets. We always get them at 40lbs or more which is about the same size or bigger then a coyote and the pigs are tough! We get coyotes on the property getting water and we have yet to have them mess with the pigs.

pretty cool. no need for electric?
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
We have not had the need to do any electric for our fencing. One big advantage to our hard packed, desert soil is the ease with which it hangs onto those t-posts. We've raised over 40 pigs with the setup you see here and haven't had one break out...yet....knock on wood!!!
