You switched all you bulbs in your vehicle over to L.E.D. versions, but now your turn signals hyper flash. You can eliminate the problem by using load resistors, making the vehicle think there is a regular bulb installed in the vehicle.

The resistor does not create a short. A short is when you have power flowing with no load on the circuit. A load is anything that consumes power on a given circuit... In this situation the "load" is the resistor itself. If you would put a plain wire between the positive and negative ends then you would have a short. Now as to why you get "hyper-flash" is because the LED bulbs consume very little power compared to the stock incandescent ones. Replacing the bulbs with LEDs makes the vehicle think that one of the bulbs may be burned out so it hyper-flashes as a warning. Adding the load resistors increases power consumption making the vehicle think everything is A-OK. Thought I would clear up some things for you.

Using to heavy resistors can make the car think there is a short circuit. That's why you should use a 25w resistor for each bulb or one 50w resistor for two bulbs, i.e. front and rear.

It's not about how many people figured it out. It's called search intent. Consider re-labeling your video. A bit misleading. I was just browsing along, not looking for anything in particular but the video title doesn't state "reasoning behind it" or anything specific to what you are really doing. You are not doing a load resistor install. You are troubleshooting and explaining the thought process. Your title should be "troubleshooting and thought process behind load resistors with LED lighting" not the latter. Your views would likley be higher and your dislikes likley lower. Not trying to be a dick man, just trying to help you understand "search intenet". Google it.

I'm doing this this weekend. I'm also going to be redoing the wiring for my HIDs. I did it kinda lazy because I wanted to put them in, but had to get it done in time to make it to work. Haven't had the time to fix it since. But I'm setting time aside to pull it all out and mount and run the wire better. Will also take the time to find good places to put the load resistors. I already have one that I use for my headlights so that way my high beam dash indicator will work when my brights are on.

Hyper flash on flashers is cause by the current draw from a filament lamb is higher than a LED lamb. The flash unit is designed to flash for a given time depending on the lamp current drawn. Adding a resistor to the LED will simulate the proper current during this condition, given you the normal flash time.

actually all the turn signals are fitted with a device called flasher. it is what makes your bulb go on off on off in a flashing kinda way. what happened inside the circuit is that when the current flows through the filament(Closed circuit-bulb on) it grows big, due to the heat, and it in turns disconnected the circuit. And the bulb goes off. when in open circuit the filament cools down and circuit is closed again. bulbs is on again. these process repeats itself. and you have flashing turn signal. and when you connect a LED(which offers a much lower resistance) instead of a bulb current flowing through the filament is more. It heats up quickly. this disconnects the circuit quickly and you get quick flashes.

The entire car just has a single flasher relay. A resistor in that circuit does the hyper-flash thing to try and notify you of a bulb being burnt out. Rather than deal with resistors you can usually find an electronic flasher that avoids the problem.

@razmossis
@razmossis 7 жыл бұрын
Your reason for hyperflash occurring... no. You need to understand what creates the timing for your car's indicator relay. Resistors. The car uses the inherent resistance of the incandescent light bulb to create the timing. LED's have extremely low resistance, so in order to correct the relay's timer, you must put appropriate resistance back into the circuit.

LEDs have basically NO resistance. That is why nearly every circuit with an LED requires a resistor. You're right that they don't draw as much current, that is the reason a second line has to be wired in parallel, to allow the excess current to flow around the LED.

The problem I am facing is that the turn signals hyper flash when I have my parking lights or low beams on. When they are off, turn signals don't hyper flash. I have installed 50W 6ohm resistors on both left and right. What's wrong over here?

Hello, great video, thank you! Question; I have a 2005 Corvette and a while back, I installed a sequential turn signal modules for the rear taillights (two round tail lights on either side). It worked great until I decided to replace the incandescent bulbs with LED's. Since then, the wretched hyper flash started which superseded the sequential turn signals. How do I get the hyper flash to stop along with keeping the sequential turn signals going? I did try installing a resister on the inner tail light (sequence of flashing light is from inner light to outer light) on both left and right sides but that did not fix it. Do I need to put the resisters on both tail light on the left and right sides or do I need to find where the hot turn signal wire splits off (one for inner and one for the outer sockets, and attach a single resister there? Thanks!

Nice pun "hopefully this sheds some light..." ha ha. Anyway, just a note on the resistors, since vehicles have DC (not AC) the diode only allowing current in one direction would not affect it. It would either just work (very high resistance) or not work (open) depending on polarity. It would likely result in hyperflash/error in both scenarios. The problem some people run into is that not all cars have used turn signal bulbs with the same resistance over the years. Option 1: If you have a multitester, just measure the resistance of the factory bulb, and make sure the resistor has approximately the same resistance. If you have trouble, measure the Ohms of the resistors and make sure they match what they are supposed to be. With such a lack of quality these days, you may also have a defective resistor. Option 2: Purchase replacement LED with a built in resistor, but it has to specific to the bulb being replaced (ie have the same resistance). If the LED manufacturer tries to get away with using the same LED replacement for incandescent bulbs with vastly different resistance, then it may or may not work. Option 3: Trial and error with straight LED (no built in resistor). If you get hyperflash/error, use a resistor. If it's still too fast, try a resistor with smaller Ohm value (or you can also use 2 of the larger resistors in parallel to achieve half--but be careful, you might blow a fuse in the process :-). If it's blinking too slow, use more resistance (you can put 2 of them in series to double the resistance). Just look up resistors in parallel vs series on youtube if you are not sure what that is. Changing resistance has an inverse effect on the amps. The computer is really just looking at the amount of amps drawn when it flashes and a straight LED bulb uses significantly less amps (has higher resistance) than incandescent. Option 4: Some owner's manuals give the watts of the bulb and as long as the resistor's watt rating is based on the same voltage, it might get you close enough, YMMV. Option 5: There may be a replacement flasher or relay (vehicle specific) that can fix it.

Your thoughts on electricity need some help. Resistance creates heat which is why incandescent bulbs are hot. Since the load resistor is taking the same load as the incandescent light bulb that's being replaced, it gets just as hot. LEDs take very little current, that's why they stay cool and that's also why the vehicle hyper flashes. It doesn't see the load it's expecting so it alerts the driver of a bulb out. Putting the resistor in the circuit isn't like creating a short because there is a load. A short is when there is a circuit with no load, like a screwdriver makes connection with both positive and negative. In the case of a short, the current is unrestricted except by the wires so an electrical fire happens. Having a load limits the amount of current allowed through the circuit.

The ones for vehicles with a CAN bus have some resistors on them. If you bought those type you may not need any additional resistors. I bought them for my 2006 Jetta and they worked as advertised and I did not need any resistors. Usually it is hard to find a good LED for these kind of cars because the ones at most auto parts stores are not the right bulb out of the box. I wonder if Sylvania makes one like that yet. I am thinking of the resistors already in the bulb so you don't have to do these things. It would be nice because a good one for my car is rather difficult to find. I go to websites that claim to have a compatible bulb and advertise it as plug and play and all. When I chat with them they still tell me I need load resistors. I wonder if they even have a clue what they are selling. I would buy their bulbs for other vehicles that don't need load resistors anyhow. One thing that causes that hyper flash in many cars is the relays. There may be relays for use with LEDs and they might be intended for older vehicles that do not have a CAN bus or any other sensitive electronics. I mention relays because in my very long search for a good LED for my VW that showed up a few times in some forums. Just do what I did and look around and see what people are saying about certain brands and things. Some do not last and are a waste of money.

Replace the existing flasher relay with one of those modified electronic flasher relays for your automobile. Some vehicles don't have a replaceable relay though. Some people have had success using CANBUS rated LEDs. I've heard that some vehicles have a control module that controls the left/right turn flashing and that module can be reprogrammed for LEDs. Not all modules can be reprogrammed. Load resistors should be your last option.

@@AnthonyJ350 Replacing the flasher relay is the best option. That was fine for my 2002 Mustang but I just found out that my 2014 Xterra doesn't have a user replaceable flash relay because it's integrated into the BCM. I've heard that the BCM can be reprogrammed but someone else said it isn't possiible. Nissan service couldn't help because this is non-stock. Some say that the CANBUS rated LEDs would be an option since they're suppose to have circuity that pulls enough current to fool the vehicles electronics into thinking that an OEM bulb is being used. Resistors are an option but the only problem with that is that if your LED goes bad the resistors will be telling the electronics that the LED is good.

Made sure they where securely connected and left some extra wire for some movement, along with some weather pack connections so if I had to service the bulbs I could unplug it. Same for the rear, except I used a different form of tap, the inline one that came with the resistors, and used more of the weather pack connections. Some people have told me since the signals are controlled by the cars LCM, I would have to tie into that, and I don't want to do that. There has to be another way to get all the signals working with the SMD LED's working with the resistors.

I'm using these on my motorcycle. The resistors came with 4 zip ties (I'm assuming for mounting). Will these mount fine to the metal frame using zip ties or will it melt the zip ties? I feel like it should work since they won't be wrapped around the heat sink itself, but around through the screw holes instead. I would like your opinion though.

I have the same question. I'm trying to find a good place to mount the resister on the front of my 2012 Toyota Tundra. One side of the battery is connected to the frame. Why can't one wire on the resistor be connected to one of the screws used to mount the resistor as suggested by @Corey497? There doesn't seem to be a good place near the bulb to mount the resister, so I have to run longer wire to the resistor. It would be easier to run 1 wire instead of 2. Is there some reason, like flasher circuit isolation, that require the the negative side to be wired directly to the socket?

My flasher worked properly with the stock tail lights and stock incandescent bulbs. Then I went to the rear and installed led tail lights from top gear auto for my 2000 ford ranger. These led tail lights come with there own factory 6 ohm 50 watt resistor but after installing them my flasher now hyper flashes. I used an ohm meter to test the resistors and they show 6 ohms resistance. I figure I need more resistance on the rear led tail lights do you think I need 8 ohm 50 watt resistors instead? What would it hurt to place another 6 ohm 50 watt resistor in a( double y) to the 1st resostor. Say 12 ohm 50 watts? My thinking is the heat build up would be 1/2 as much. Would that be considered 6 ohm 100 watt? Or 12 ohm 50 watt? Or should I just get 8 ohm?

Maybe you used too heavy rsistors like 50w for each bulb? The car then thinks there is something wrong either. When using 50w for each bulb, the amount of draw is 100w(!) per side where the original incandescent bulbs are drawing 42 watt total. 25w resistor for each bulb of one 50w for two bulbs per side is better.
@ruudwilschut9095
@ruudwilschut9095 5 жыл бұрын
Why using 50w resistors for each bulb? When you replace a 21w incandescent bulb for a LED a 25w resistor will be more than enough. It generates less heat also and the car won't think it's short ciruit. Too little load causing hyperflash, but too much load can the car make think there is a short circuit and refuses to blink. One 50w resistor for each side (front and rear) is ok since it replaces two 21w incandescent bulbs. If I remember correctly, each side is one circuit so one resistor of 50w for each side should be enough.
