Jon, I don't think it ever ends. I am going to buy a little tractor...... then where am I going to keep it (so ya build a shed or 86 one of the cars out of the garage)..... then it is I need gravel/dirt moved (so ya go buy a small dump trailer)..... then you notice that your truck/suv does not do so great with a load of gravel being hauled by your 1/2 ton vehicle..... Ya then think, Ok new 1-one ton truck, Bigger Dump trailer, Different house on a large property...... Oh yea, now a bigger tractor. IT NEVER ENDS!! It is best to just keep the 1/2 ton truck and the 5x10 dump trailer.

Maybe keep the 1/2 ton and add helper springs to the back? Also if you were to do that, how would the tractor sit if you backed it on. Obviously the loader would be hanging off over the back just as it does on the front, but you wouldn't have to worry about high centering the backhoe. I have a 16' Sierra 1500 with Hellwig helpers, makes a huge difference when I haul my 7000lb camper. Love the videos, keep it up bud!

I have the same set up as you. 6x10 10000lb load trail dump trailer with a bx23s with no cab. (Second set of ramps and you can load/unload at any angle or weather) last year I traded my f150 for a 2019 f150 V6 with the max tow package. (Get the tow mirrors) It’s amazing. Dealer told me it can tow 13k but I only needed 10k. I’ve towed 18k with it. I don’t plan to tow that much again but the truck and trailer handled it awesome and it didn’t even squat (I couldn’t believe it either). I have pics if you are interested. If you like the half ton there is no need to go bigger. Also, I bought it near Minneapolis and found a dealer that offered a 15 year completely bumper to bumper warranty.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, that’s a great warranty! I’ve thought about getting another newer f150 because they tow so much more now. However, do have plans to tow my L3940 in the future and maybe a 5th wheel camper someday. I’d like at least a 3/4 ton for that. I’ve got sure spring on my truck now and they help a lot. We’ll have to see what kind of deals I can find. Keep on tractoring!

I just bought a 2003 Silverado 2500 HD to haul my tractor. It has a 9900 lb tow rating. My 20 ft trailer weighs 2500 lbs so that leaves me with 7400 lbs of payload. Enough for the tractor and implements. The truck is an extended cab with an 8 boot bed so the long wheelbase tows very well. The new trucks come with built in brake controllers. Luckily, the previous owners installed a controller in mine.
@ritterjon

2500 GMC Duramax/Allison is perfect for your application with room to grow.. I’ve owned 2: a 2003 2500 and a 2006 3500. Loved both trucks but the huge size made the 3500 annoying for getting groceries. The Duramax is proven and powerfull. Nothing like the torque of a turbo Diesel.
@jamesvoss3332

That really is an excellent setup for getting into close places and getting a LOT of work done. I'm not so sure you really should get anything very much larger. As for towing, I've towed RVs etc. literally 100's of thousands of mile. In my opinion, the KEYs to a good tow truck is adequate suspension, E-rated tires, trailer brakes and GEARING. You DO want a lower ratio differential for towing. It's a real torque multiplier. Our 2008 Tacoma is a 4x4 Sport with a special option 4:56 differential ratios. It's not a 3/4 ton truck but it has a 5600 lb towing capacity and it has the power to pull a lot of weight. You might want to look at any 3/4 ton 4x4 as they will have the lower diff ratios AND bonus, the 4x4 will get you out of a lot of simple but stuck places. No reason for a big lift, just that low gear ratio and 4x4.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 4 жыл бұрын
You’re exactly right about the torque multiplier. I think a 3/4 ton would suit me well. I do need to upgrade to a better set of tires because the tires I have now are not made for towing, especially as often as I do. I always have a trailer when using the truck. Keep on tractoring!

The f150’s were pretty good trucks but lacked a bit in power I went to a 2011 f250 6.2 and love it it tows great and I’ve put 335,000 miles on it and the gas mileage empty is way better than my old f150 in fact I get between 11and 14 mpg towing my fifth wheel trailer
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 4 жыл бұрын
That’s great mileage for towing. The best I’ve ever got without towing is just 14. It’s a gas hog for sure. I rarely drive it so it’s not that much of an expense but I do wish it towed better. 7900 is max I believe. Keep on tractoring!

I have a 2009 F150 with the max trailering package. Crew cab with short box. Max trailer weight, 11,200 lbs. GCWR 17,100 lbs. So yes, you can pull a much bigger trailer with a ‘half ton’ pickup.

The capacities of any truck built in the last 5 years are close to double of the older trucks in the same class, I load the newer Chevy 1500s with a yard of stone at a time and they aren’t even squatting that bad, but a 2001 Chevy 1500 would be resting on the axle.... with that being said all rams have pitiful payload capacity

I have a l3560C and my wife has a BX23S and I currently have a Toyota Tacoma. I have access to a 23 foot tilt bed trailer and I can tow the BX; however, it is close to the 6500 pound tow limit of the Tacoma. The trailer empty weights 3400 pounds. Thus, I feel a f350, Dodge or Chevy 3500 would be in the correct ball park. I don’t see me pulling a travel trailer; so, I am very undecided on the $10,000.00 option of a diesel engine due to the higher cost and higher maintenance costs. Plus, here in western Washington diesel is often the same price or higher as unleaded and you have the extra cost of DEF. So MPH is a big consideration.

I took a screen shot of your trailer loaded, got the bx/fel/bh weights from bx specs and estimated the CG of each guessing at the metal in front of and behind the cg. It looks like the overall average moment arm cg is about 11% forward of the center distance between the two axles and the ball mount which is perfect and is about 254 lbs!

Don’t let state trooper catch you hauling without the backhoe bucket strapped down and the loader bucket also has to be strapped down. You also cannot have any part of your load protruding from the confines of the intended weight baring area more than two feet without a permit. Your F150 has a tongue weight limit but depending on the load you don’t want to exceed more than 10% tongue weight of your entire load behind the hitch. For example if your load plus trailer is 10,000lbs to put more than 1,000lbs on your hitch is too much weight. I treating to watch and I hope this was somewhat helpful. Good video.

Too bad trailer manufacturers think their trailers are made of gold, holy crap, looked up pricing on a 7x14 trailer, OUCH!!! I'll stick with my car trailer, its just a bit lighter weight than one of those new dump trailers by about 1,000lbs, but longer and a little wider I think, but paid for....the most important part. The ramp on it is great as its a 1 piece tailgate type ramp, so you don't have to be as precise loading/unloading like you do those regular 2 piece ramps....however, its really short, trying to load a regular car onto the trailer is quite a chore, doesn't have a winch on the deck for one, and with that short ramp you really have to get creative to get the angle of the ramp down enough to allow a car to be loaded without getting hung up....I've got it down pretty good for cars now, I've hauled enough dead ones...yeah only time the trailer gets used for hauling cars is when they don't move on their own power LOL. It would work fine for a tractor with loader and other implements for sure though....I have no clue what its rated for, as it was custom built by the guy I bought it from who owned a landscaping company. he used it to haul landscaping boulders, skid steers, and other equipment, so it should easily haul a sub-compact tractor and implements/attachments home from the dealer. I just have to figure out storage solutions for implements and attachments as I don't have a garage...may have to rearange my barn to allow storage for stuff in there. Loader will probably live on the tractor all the time so not too worried about that, but tiller, box blade, pallet forks, etc. will need a home that has easy access when needed, may have to get creative and build some sort of racks to store stuff LOL.

I'll have to find a pickup though, don't think my explorer or my Ranger would tow it LOL. I'll just have to borrow my 88 F250 back from my uncle for the day to get the tractor home if I ever get one. I watched this video 2 years ago, came back to watch it again, because I sold my 6x12 trailer because just the trailer was 2,300 pounds heavy, add the 2,700 pounds of the tractor and backhoe, then my Tacoma is too loaded for my taste, so this year I will build a new 5x10 trailer in aluminium of about 600 pounds, front and rear gate will open 24 inches (sides high) to allow space but not capacity, looking at your trailer, it is perfect because it dumps, mine wont, but your tongue is too freaking short, all I would do is add another 24 inches of tongue, and all your problems are solved, plus it will be easier to backup with the added 24 inches, my tongue will be 58 inches long, that's the secret....with a fold away tongue system, 6,000 pounds class, easier to park also!

1999 F150 you said? www.fordf150.net/specs/99tow.php Towing capacity, when new, 8,000 to 8,300 pounds. www.fordf150blog.com/2015-ford-f-150-towing-capacities/ 3.5L EcoBoost has a 10,700 to 12,200 pounds towing. 5.0L has 8,300 to 11,100 pounds. So you could just stick to the F150, and find a newer one 5 years old or less. Going to a 250/2500, and any would handle it without a problem, but you said you prefer the smaller size. The 250s are all pretty huge feeling, comparatively. I miss my Ram 2500, 2007.5 with the 6.7L Cummins, but it was a pain to park in a lot of places that re-painted with smaller parking spots in the last few years. For variety, the 2015 Ram 1500 has up to 9,050 (4wd) or 9,180 towing. 2015 Silverado 1500 can be specced up to 12,000 pounds. So . . . options. :) I just did a basic "gmc 1500 2015 towing capacity" search (ram/F150) to get these numbers. Another option is going with a gooseneck trailer to put the trailer weight over the rear axle rather than levering further back at the regular hitch. With a 1999 gas truck, though . . . The suspension sag isn't your problem, most likely. If it is, that's just helper springs or an air assist. With the loading angle, you could use a 2x4 or 4x4 section under the ramps to change the loading angle, as well. The tractor should be able to climb that little bump difference. It isn't a massive change, but could be enough to stop the dragging.
