Hi all, thought I'd share this bit of knowledge as I could find anything about loading an Argo in a truck box online.
Hope someone finds this useful.

I wish I had found this about 100 searches ago.. we just bought a brand new Argo 600 and a trailer to transport it, but I am thinking about buying a camper too. It would be nice to be able to load the argo in the truck bed, then pull the camper as well. Found alot of stuff on atv/utv solutions but hardly anything for an Argo. Construction looks pretty straightforward as I imagined it would be, I just really wanted to see that someone actually did it. Thank you!!!

I should put one on by I use my truck for work too and it would look too commercial. In a few years I might just rip the box off and put a deck on it. Much better for loading my gear etc. When I get the tracks I'll have to use a trailer anyways :/

I added some small ramps to catch the wheels as it moves towards the truck, so I can't go too far forward. When I bought this truck I had a heated back window - now I have a slide 🤭 - Happened a few years ago with a Honda Pioneer 500 being too close on a. bumpy road. Lesson learned.

Damn! I love you channel! We are actually shopping right now between Argos avenger, Pioneer 1000, ranger or defender for the same use you do. We also share your thinking about the pioneer being 50 inches and able to ride in narrow trails for exploration of hunting and fising sites. If you had to choose between a pioneer 1000 or Argo avenger, what would be your choice if you could not afford both types of machines?

Hi & Music - Thats a really tough question! If you want a machine that can cope with snow, water and any terrain the Argo is the only machine that can do it all. However, it doesn't compare to a side by side for speed, comfort and the ability to cover distance. My number one piece of advice is to go and test drive one before deciding (even a second hand one). You will either love it or hate it! It has down sides but for me it works in my environment in central Alberta. Let me know how you make out! Best of Luck Michael

I did something very similar with a snowmobile for a few years. My only issue was that the tailgate was never meant to take that kind of force so you have to replace cables way more often.

I try and never put weight on the tailgate. I've seen some pictures of what can happen. Loading and unloading is ok though - just not bouncing down the road with a UTV hanging of it is BAD!

Wondering if you ever tried to load your Ranger 800 on custom ramps like this. If you did in a 8' truck bed, I wonder if you could close the tailgate with the utv sitting higher. I'm looking at a Ranger 700 and want to haul it in my 8' Chevy 2500.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
With the raised platform like this the Honda P500 would fit easily with the tailgate closed. If you measure from the front bumper to the back of the rear tire, and if the distance is less than 96" you are good to go!

That would be no - the machine is 58" with no tracks with tracks. With 18" tracks 71.5" I believe. In the winter I will use a trailer I'm thinking or build a higher deck above the truck bed. Gulp!

Hi how long are the ramps that you used? I just built this and am terrified to load it up! Front tires come off the ramps in the air!!! Maybe im going too slow. ?? My ramps are basically 8’ long but have a curve to them maybe thats the problem? I don’t want to flip it backwards!! Thanks. Thanks for the video.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
My ramps were 8' also. If your setup is the same with the platform and the wood ramp sections you should have no problem getting up. A little nerve inducing the first time but as I got to know the Argo I got more confident. HOWEVER, if you have a winch on the Argo - just rig a winch point from the tie downs in the box and winch her up 👍

I have not but it should be ok I think. It climbs really well and its fuel injected. I saw a video with Argos going through the Rubicon kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5uIldeZqNaxiZc.html - Not much suspension would be the only concern!
@tananam9782

So is this replacing the Honda Pioneer 500? It has to be the smallest Argo I've ever seen. Historically around here, Argos have somewhat bridged the span between ATVs and, say, old M-29 Weasel (super popular once, but WWII surplus technology which is hard to maintain), Thiokol, Bombardier, and other tracked vehicles. The Argo shared some of the faults of the larger tracked vehicles, primarily, that skid-steering tends to tear up soft ground. Somewhat offset by the low ground pressure of tracks, but not so much by the wheels of an Argo. There are 6x6 atvs, after all. They've been around, but were never especially popular (from old school users who didn't like the compromises, and new transplants who don't like the relatively slow performance). Does this machine have a suspension? It doesn't look like it, most Argos don't. Instead, they rely on their balloon tires, which can be... interesting, especially when pivoting over obstacles on the middle axle. I want the best of both worlds. I grew up on a three-wheeler with no suspension and very soft tires. Without a rider (or even with a very young one, it got scary sometimes) it would float, and you could line it across deep water, like a canoe. A good rider rarely sat on the seat on anything more than very flat ground. It worked well, but was a lot more work than I think I would want to deal with now. Something like a P500 could be great with oversized soft tires, but it would have to be very slow. Without body english, handling would be difficult, and side inclines would be super sketchy,even more than they already are with that machine. I think the primary appeal of the Argo in the past has partially been size (6 and 8 wheel versions being larger than the one depicted here) and their amphibian nature. I remain unconvinced on that latter point (they're not very good boats) and the former presents it's own issues (why I prefer old three-wheelers to new giant atvs, and the p500 to the p1000, and almost everything every other SxS company makes). As an aside: One thing that irks me somewhat is that where there are regulatory trail restrictions near me (most stringent on BLM land, but State land has it's own headaches too) they tend to define vehicles by weight, not size or ground pressure. Sometimes, tracked vehicles (snowmobiles being an exception) are banned altogether, regardless of other statistics. So, For example, the Honda Pioneer 500, with it's width limited to near that of most ATVs legal in the lower 48, is not legal to drive on nearby BLM trails because it's GVW is more than 1500 pounds. However, a big adventure-touring motorcycle (I own one, but I understand it's limitations) could theoretically ride on the same trails, while cutting hugely obscene ruts in soft ground and ultimately being forced to turn around because they just can't get through. Another aside: Check out the "Sherp" if you're interested in skid-steer atvs. Of course, it's outsized Russian engineering compared to lightweight, small ATVs in North America, but compared to American mud boggers, swamp buggies, and the like, its advantages should be plainly obvious. Just don't be in a hurry.
@TheEmporiumOutdoors
@TheEmporiumOutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
I still have the P500 and still love it. The Argo is to extend the season so I can track it and use it in the snow. I considered a snow machine but thought the Argo would triple as a boat for me as well. Its the same size as all the other 6 wheel Argos as far as I know. The new admiral gearboxes remove the break skid steer (mine doesn't have this) and tears up the ground much less. I would have preferred an 8x8 but the price is getting up there! The Sherp is awesome and I've seen what they can do - but again the price is north of $70k?! as far as I can tell. If I was using it commercially I'm sure I could justify it but I'm just a part-time outdoors man :) No suspension on the Argo - just balloon tires with 2psi - a rough ride compared to a UTV with independent suspension. However, I've already taken the Argo to places I would never reach with a UTV or with substantial struggle. I see now how they fit in the scheme of things and why people overlook some of their limitations for the benefits they provide. More videos to come on the Argo :)
@tananam9782
@tananam9782 5 жыл бұрын
Over the years I've known several people with a similar idea, either a tracked Argo, a Cushman Trackster, or some such, as a replacement for a snowmachine. They've all been disappointed, and if you're taking them on a typical winter trail around here (snowmachine and dog-team sized, narrower than argo or a trackster, in fact, modern atvs can have difficulty) often they disrupt the trail, especially if there are many tight turns. I've often considered a tracked vehicle for more open country, say in the mountains south of here (like a Thiokol Imp, or even an M-29 Weasel) but the use would be very limited, as would the terrain I could ride over, even with no trees to deal with (steep inclines and deep snow stop most "snow-cat" type vehicles). But who knows, your snow is different than mine, and it looks like most of the places you ride are broad enough to accept an Argo or a conventional side-by-side. I hope it works well! What sort of terrain did you find was better suited for the Argo, where the Pioneer struggled? Oh, I nearly forgot (seemed this belonged here, rather than at the end of the comment): Have you considered the Mattracks Maxim system? Not cheap, but neither is a whole new machine. A couple years ago I toyed with the idea of these tracks on a pioneer 500 (even though I can't afford it). After some mulling it over, I got the reply that they could indeed be fitted to a P500 (Mattracks' website videos show them mounted to a mid-sized Ranger). With the new front diff autolocker and several cab heater systems now available for the P500, it might be an interesting alternative. If you do end up considering a new snowmachine, I might suggest something in the Ski-Doo Skandic line or Tundra, or the Polaris Voyageur II (now simply called the Voyageur 155, I think). However, most of these machines sit taller than their fore-bearers, some riders prefer the older styles with smaller engines, like the Ski-Doo Tundra II. Unfortunately, most people with well functioning examples don't want to get rid of them, and the older machines in snow-country often command a premium. Around here, IF you can get someone to sell their Ski-Doo Elan (a very small machine by today's standards) It'll easily be for $2,500 US or more. If you plan on trail grooming or pulling a LOT of weight on a cargo sled, a Ski-Doo Alpine or Alpine II would be good, but they haven't made those for a long time (they're two-track designs, so quite a bit wider than a typical snowmachine). There's the Arctic Cat Bearcat, which is somewhere in-between the Alpine and conventionally sized snowmachines (I think it's also a four stroke). The Polaris Widetrack once had four stroke available, but from what I see now, mostly it's a throwback to an old standard design they had some years ago. For most uses, though, these four models are overkill and not especially fast or efficient (well, no snowmachine is especially efficient, but I digress). A few years ago, Ski-Doo, I think attempting to take advantage of the upsurge in popularity of side by side atvs, tried to re-boot the Elite. The original was funky and fun to play with, but not especially practical. The redux is heavy and unwieldy, and as far as I can tell, doesn't do well in deep powder at all. Also, good luck digging it out if you get stuck. Avoid the mid-2000's era Ski-Doo Elite. Four strokes, most are Yamahas, tend to be quieter, somewhat more fuel efficient under certain conditions, but are very heavy. Low weight and large footprint are your friends in the snow. Modern mountain performance machines break this axiom somewhat, but for the most part it's still true.

There are a few differences with the models. I would stay away from the 18HP motors and go for the fuel injected models. I would recommend that you also test drive one before purchasing as they are not for everyone. They are slow and have little suspension but if you need to cross lots of boggy marshy land they are excellent 👍 I'd recommend watching my Argo videos for more insight on their pros and cons 😉
