The poor mans lobster name came from boiling the red rocky. the spikes on the head of the cod are the nasty ones when spiked. Easy to cut off the fins before cleaning. I get excited catching a big one knowing it's a good feed.

hate using a float, can confirm same here - I spear with a float for safety sake but getting out or in from the rocks is a nightmare and then I also work as a diver, one of the jobs we do require a float being dragged along while we are on scuba in sub 10m water. . . imagine the entanglement nightmares with all that gear!

Red rockies are one of my favourite fish but no way do they taste like lobster. The term 'poor man's lobster refers more to a method of cooking, than a particular fish. Overseas, monkfish, halibut and various cod all get the same name. The central tenet of cooking poor man's lobster seems to be boiling a firm white fleshed fish (like a red rocky) to give a firmer, less flakey texture and using butter, sugar and lemon to change the taste. I've never cooked one that way, but it would be interesting to try the comparison using the poor man's recipe against a boiled eastern.
