Local Bhutanese Village Food and Beautiful Hike in Phobjikha Valley, Bhutan! (Day 16)

On Day 16 of our travel and food tour of Bhutan we had an amazing Bhutanese breakfast, took a hike, visited another village for lunch, and stayed at a local home farm stay.
Gangtay Nature Trail - In the morning we took a hike to see black necked cranes. The views of Phobjikha Valley were spectacular.
Yangkha Dem Farmhouse - We drove over to another village and stopped for lunch at another farm house. Some of the Bhutanese dishes we ate included lom - turnip leaves, ezay - any kind of chili sauce or chili pickle, and shamu datshi - mushrooms and cheese.
Phub Lham Farmhouse - At the end of the day, we checked into another farm house home stay in Phobjikha Valley, Bhutan to spend the night.

I am loving this Bhutanese series. I love that your not staying in hotels all the time and that you are being immersed in the people, their homes, their culture and their cooking. I do see common dishes but it appears every home makes there food with love and slightly different. Just like if you told two chefs to cook something and gave them the same ingredients, each would make something different yet the same. There aren't conveniences of stores on every corner to supply food variety and refrigeration is not available in moat rural homes. The Bhutanese are eating what they can grow and preserve and making flavorful food at the same time. I know my mouth stills waters, even if I have seen the dish before, so they are doing something very remarkable.

Okay, I am so confused as to why there are so many of you here complaining about the food in Bhutan. First of all, Mark explained in his first video that there will be 20 videos about his trip to Bhutan. So if you all are complaining about how the videos are dragging on, you have an option not to watch it. Secondly, Bhutanese food repeats, it's the same like how every food repeats. I am sure every one of you are taught to respect other cultures no matter how they are, because by saying that our food is boring you, you are disrespecting our food. Our food in Bhutan are all organic and they come in different variations but it's not like we will keep inventing new dish all the time, ofcourse it will repeat, in my opinion, repeating food means that the food is edible and good, instead of experimenting all the time. I just want to end my comment by saying, if you are just going to complain, then might as well not watch it, I am sure that if I was to point things out about your culture, you would not be happy either. Bhutanese food is simple and delicious. And so are other food in different countries.

Bhutan famous red rice, cheese, I love Bhutan's unique, original food and not mixed up with other countries because now a days many countries create their own version food by using spices from other countries but Bhutan's food is so original and unique and uses it own spices grown in Bhutan, that is why Bhutan's food is so unique and authentic .

I have been watching since day 1 and have never missed a single video. every night I wait for you to upload and when you do, I watch it very eagerly and my heart is full of joy. there will always be people who have something negative to say but pay no heed because your videos are amazing. keep posting and be happy. Mark, this is another refreshing gem. Your ability to move at the pace of the culture you are in and to avoid making constant comparisons is the mark of a good guest. The simple home cooked meals and immersion into the day-to-day culture of Bhutan is wonderful. The Bhutanese are a reminder that some of the best things in life are also the simplest... Sitting in a Bhutanese farm house... sharing a cup of hot butter tea in front of a wood burning stove... priceless...

That farm house looks awesome! You can't beat an experience like that. You really get to see what life is like for the indigenous population. In the 80's while on maneuvers in Germany we would sometimes stop near a farm and the family would bring us food and beer; good times.

I keep coming back to this series, because even though the food is pretty repetitive, it is comforting to watch and the atmosphere is great. Also, the food reminds me of the Netherlands (kinda) because of how simple it is, and because of all the cheese.

Do what I do, If I want to try something new I'll do my research on the recipe and make it at home. Right now I've been making a lot of Korean dishes. The food is delicious and I don't have a Korean restaurant in my hometown. But I have access to a great Asian grocery store, Amazon, KZfaq, and other sites on the internet to look up videos. So I've been making a lot of Korean dishes at home for myself and my family. It's fun to try new foods plus I love to cook and bake. :D

To all the people who are saying they are bored with this series, why don't you just stop watching then? Problem solved, you're welcome! And to the people who are saying that Bhutan is beautiful but the food is boring and repetitive... food IS a very big part of any culture so to insult their food IS the same as insulting their culture. Not every place around the world has the same flavors, variety and ingredients as another... that's what makes cultures unique and marvelous to experience. Clearly this IS the variety of food available in Bhutan, and lovingly made by the people there who are known to be some of the happiest around the world. Mark is showing what's authentically Bhutanese cuisine. To keep demanding more sounds like you want to impinge your unfair expectations and judgement onto the Bhutanese culture. I find that really sad and disturbing.

I love all you videos Mark. Stay away from haters as they don't know this food make Bhutan people warm as it is cold weather most of time so they have less varieties. But you make for true followers hungry with your video. I don't mind to see same food again and again. Love that food and the people are wonderful the land is so beautiful would love to spend time on a farm there rather than a hotel so much peace there, thank you Mark and Ying xxx I do have a comment for those who are putting the food down, most people there do not have much in the way of being able to grow food on a harsh land you complain that the food is boring but I find from what I have seen is that the food looks wholesome and very tasty their culture is beautiful and the people seem so respectful of others ad give what they have to feed others. Please don't disrespect them because the food is not to your liking or it looks the same and it may look the same but the taste is different in each house. Try to understand where they live and their culture .

It reminded me our trip to Darjeeling in February in 2011. We were sitting in the hotel next to the fireplace as long as we could, and slept with jackets and loads of blankets.

I am a fussy eater to have been since I was a child, I wouldn't eat eggs unless the yoke was the right color, really fussy about meats and how others cook them, just because people are fussy eaters doesn't mean they don't eat much texture in food is so complex those are other ways people are fussy, so Rozi Rana don't get upset over someone who is ignorant over things, I am glad that Mark and Ying have helped you to increase your diversity of different foods :)

Onglar No it's not I eat in restaurants and at other people's homes yes I am fussy but my fussiness is when meats are going rotten and how clean their kitchen are, and in my house I do all the cooking so I don't think I annoy anyone who cooks for me.
