Local politicians are working behind the scenes to stop the construction of the new Browns stadium in Brookpark, Ohio. Stay tuned to the Ultimate Browns Show and The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show For the latest breaking news on this controversial issue. #clevelandbrowns #ucss #clevelandbrownstoday
If you were to pick out any average Browns fan or Northeast Ohioan off the street, you'd probably get a mixed bag of answers to what's become an increasingly controversial question: What should come of Cleveland Browns Stadium?
Let the Haslams relocate to Brook Park with a $2-billion dome (with half coming from the taxpayers of Ohio, Cuyahoga County and other sources). Focus on renovating the current one to the tune of $1 billion (again, with the Haslams asking for half the tab to be picked up by the public). Forego costly renovations and instead do the best we can with the current stadium?

If you were to pick out any average Browns fan or Northeast Ohioan off the street, you'd probably get a mixed bag of answers to what's become an increasingly controversial question: What should come of Cleveland Browns Stadium?
Let the Haslams relocate to Brook Park with a $2-billion dome (with half coming from the taxpayers of Ohio, Cuyahoga County and other sources). Focus on renovating the current one to the tune of $1 billion (again, with the Haslams asking for half the tab to be picked up by the public). Forego costly renovations and instead do the best we can with the current stadium?
Last Thursday afternoon at the Cleveland Public Library a panel of experts on stadium builds and sports politics gathered for two hours to discuss the hard facts and real-world implications of those possibilities.
The panel-comprised of Ward 16 Councilman Brian Kazy, former Law Director Ken Silliman, and stadium economics experts Brad Humphreys and Victor Matheson- offered lots of opinions and facts but one seemed to come with agreement: That erecting a $2.4 billion Brook Park dome and surrounding village, saying goodbye to the lakefront, would not carry the perks to Clevelanders some have been touting.
Namely, Cleveland plus Domed Stadium equals Wealthier City.
"There's zero evidence in 30 years of peer-reviewed academic research that a professional sports team in a city generates any substantial jobs, raises wages, raises income, raises property taxes," Humphreys, an economics professors at the University of Alberta, said.
"What professional sports are good at," he added, "is moving economic activity around to different parts of the city."
With Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam's stadium lease with the city to end in 2028, time is closing in on a decision that's divided Clevelanders, just as it seemed to divide attendees at Thursday's panel: Ask for public dollars to bankroll a projected $1.2 billion upgrade of Cleveland Browns Stadium where it is, or use (more) public dollars to construct a $2.4 billion football neighborhood 14 miles south in Brook Park, across from the airport and where the old Ford plant once stood.
The Haslams have been vague on their intentions after it was announced, in April, they secured the rights to buy 176 acres of land east of I-71 big enough for a ballpark village to stand. The move, seen by Thursday's panelists as a chess ploy, has nevertheless prodded local politicians, from Mayor Justin Bibb to Councilman Kazy, to ensure that Cleveland doesn't lose-with some PTSD-the Browns to a southwest suburb. (Bibb has said his preference is for the Browns to stay downtown, and has argued the city has put forth what, is in their opinion, a good deal for the city and the team).)
It's what seemed to beckon Kazy, who was the face of Council's emphasis of the 1996 Art Modell Law that attempts to protect cities from billionaires seeking to pick up their team and leave, to gather three experts on stadium deals to espouse the starry-eyed Clevelander's wish for a shiny new domed mega palace. Like Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Or Jerry's World in Dallas. Or Los Angeles' behemoth that is AT&T Stadium.

When will we stop privatizing the gains/profits and socializing the losses/expenses ? Let the multi-billionaire and the fans who have the means pay for it.

What regardless of what political and the Browns trying to either build a new stadium or fixed stadium, the people are hurting

and we will hurt even more when th Browns end up leaving again.. This time the NFL wont come back, not in a small market that cant even build a stadium fit for a modern NFL team. Plus we are not hurting, nobody is "hurting" its not that bad. High prices suck, but thats the cost of fighting a war vs tyranny when a rogue country sinks its fangs into a country that just found it had natural gas reserves, and got invaded for it, causing gas and food costs to rise through the roof. Gas has stabilized, food costs have not..

Politicians are the reason the Browns left the first time.. Haslems are not from here. They will move this team again… I mean this franchise has failed in every way since returning in 1999. The NFL isn’t going to show loyalty to a franchise that NEVER wins anything… I’m 38 years old and I’ve never even seen a division championship in Cleveland.

The new stadium is about way more than just football. Having a Final Four, WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, Super Bowl, Coventions, CFP Playoff, Concerts, etc will bring in hundreds of millions of dollars. There’s nothing negative about it. Unless you’re cheap

No this doesn't have to get ugly. When the city of Cleveland was vying for Amazon second HQ2. Rumos has it they offer Burke Lakefront airport. And the surrounding land. Cleveland should offer that same option to the Haslams for the new stadium and retail, restaurants, and hotels. And possibly luxury apartments. The Brookpark location should be plan B for the Haslams. That lakefront property would be ideal I think. The only thing the Haslams won't have control of is the parking. I think this would work for both parties involved. The Haslams and the city of Cleveland.

People are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent. They're struggling to pay for groceries and utilities, and we have millionaires and billionaires extorting tax-payers to pay to replace their 25 year-old stadium. Have you driven the streets in Cleveland? The city is friggin' broke. Let them leave!

This owner has cashed in his chips and is in the football business. He opens his wallet and gives this highly qualified front office and coachig staff whatever it needs to be successful. The roster is proof. The Browns are now a stable organization like Pittsburgh. You just can’t win a Super Bowl without stability. Leave it alone and let this guy have the facility he wants, where he wants it

G I havnt commented in a while, havmt really kept up with you guys since all of you cut your UCSS time down to literally nothing.. But heres my take on the stadium situation.. Haslam isnt going to settle for painting a piece of shit a different color and call it new.. That stadium was built on a landfill, it was rushed, and it was built on the cheap, which is why its had major damage repairs to keep it from crumbling. These people that think that staying in that stadium, renovating it, and maybe putting a retractable cover over it are delusional. Id rather help fund a 2B dollar state of the art facility in Brookpark, I've had enough of the cheap ass Cleveland city council. Go ahead, keep playing hardball Cleveland, we played this game in 1994, it didn't end well then, it wont end well now. Im sick of having cheap pleather sneakers when the rest of the league is getting brand new J's.. We will end up with another Municipal Stadium that nobody wants to play in, you watch and see.

Haslam would wipe the floor with them in court. He doesn't own that stadium. He can honor the lease, then do whatever he wants. It's his team. And if Brook Park is willing to do what Cleveland won't, then I don't blame him. Cleveland has been run through by one party Democrat rule for over 30 years. Nobody wants to do business there because it's a joke. I'm old enough to remember that the last true economic boom that Cleveland had was in the 1980s when there was an actual Republican mayor.
