That's exactly how I do it, after learning that from you quite awhile ago. I always locate on Peak and then Null it back. Quite a few times I will need to put a mark between the two and it always puts me right on. I was doing locates yesterday in dry soil so I had crap for milliamps, I grabbed my thermos of water and soaked my ground and it bumped it way up for a good locate.

Gatorade could be handy too because it's got electrolytes. Those can really help out when it's dry and there's not much moisture in the ground. Thanks!

I've noticed on some older phone peds the bonding straps wnt always be connected to the actual lines. So make sure to physically check once n awhile as he said at the 4:12 mark

A lot of my tickets are 7 thousand feet each ticket. Sometimes you don't have time to peak then knoll back.

I get it, covering 7,000 feet is a hefty back-and-forth task. Hopefully, you have some assistance out there. If you're locating multiple utilities, that's definitely a big workload for just one person.

Yeah, one of these days I'll do the current direction on the RDs; it could be useful at times as long as there's no interference with the utilities.

Working for Bell almost thirty years I can say their records keeping was terrible. I could never rely on the maps we were given.

I'm relieved to have someone from the phone company here, and yes, the print quality is awful. That's why I always advise my fellow locators that prints are merely a guide.

question - I see you marking between the peak and null. My understanding with the 8200G is when peak and null don't line up it means distortion, and the rule of thumb is to mark half the distance between the two to the opposite side of peak from null. so it's Null - - - - Peak - - Mark. It's been a reasonably reliable method. Is this not your experience?

You're absolutely right; there's some distortion happening. But even with that, the peak is usually our go-to for accuracy, except now it's not as reliable as it should be. So when we're nulling, we're essentially trying to pinpoint where the current actually is. With the peak being off, we're left with a difference between the peak and the null, and that's where the cable's position lies. It's like finding a middle ground between the two points. Hopefully, that clears things up a bit!

What about a ground strap that a previous locator/contractor did not re-ground. How would you be able to verify that just by looking at the cables grounded?

Most of the time if the other end is not grounded you will not be pushing out 100 milliamps or more. Because the path of the return is not there to give you a strong Signal Strength.

I'm about to locate 1,600 ft of telecommunications rear easement Monday. my first project, any tips I should know to make it easier for me. I usually locate on 512 with two bars? 🙏🏼

Just make sure all the pedestals are grounded, and that someone did not unbind one of the pedestals. Ensure that when you conduct your sweep, you're far enough away from your ground rod and that the pedestal is at least 25 feet away if possible. If you're not pushing out the proper milliamps (512 with two bars), then you know that one of the pedestals is not bonded. So, ensure all the cables are bonded inside the pedestals. It's going to be a pain in the ass, I feel for you.
