Hi - thanks for what you do! At 6:46 what is the cable situation you're using. There's a specialty alligator clip with piral phone type cable. Thene ther's the large clamp - you're clamping both on the aluminum tracer wire. Additionally you're transmitter is grounded. Can you explain this set up? Thank you
@811chicago55 күн бұрын
The only thing I'm doing is attaching alligator clips to the trace wire, which is very thin, to get a better grip. Then, I use my regular leads to send the tone through the wire via the alligator clip.

Highly informative content as always brother!! We've talked before, and with a little coaxing by my trainees, I've completely changed the (direction) and name of my channel, in an effort to pay homage to your fantastic work. I mentioned once before we should make an attempt at a collaboration between you out there in the Chicago area, and me over here on the East Coast. Together I think we can accomplish great things, and hopefully benefit the entire industry through video based education. Cheers my friend!! 🦺☺️

why not try bumping the frequency up to 33k or 83k to try and get that taco bell ped? I know a higher frequency is more likely to bleed off on to surrounding utilities, but if the peak and null agree, the amperage stays steady and as long as it leads straight to that taco bell ped, I would think it would be worth a shot. Thanks for the video.
@811chicago58 күн бұрын
The main goal of these videos is to show the proper way to locate utilities. Even if I use a higher frequency and get lucky with this one being an accurate mark, there's no guarantee I'll be as fortunate on my next job or the one after that. Taking shortcuts will eventually lead to damage. I see a lot of people taking shortcuts because they’re so comfortable with it, but they end up getting damages. The whole point is to do it the right way, even though it can be a pain. That's the only way to ensure accuracy and avoid damage. Thanks!

Just a lay person that finds this stuff interesting, I've seen other locator videos send a fish tape down the duct and direct connect to get a heading going I suppose if it really was crucial
@811chicago512 күн бұрын
Whenever you see someone using fish tape on a duct system or a conduit run, it indicates that the cable is dielectric, containing no metallic materials that can produce a tone. Therefore, it is essential to fishtape the duct or conduit run to accurately mark out the dielectric cable.

I love steel services to Steel Main so much actually. though tracers on plastic are braindead easy to locate but it's such a chore when it is no longer accessible. have to backfed on 200k from nearby service assuming every service and the main they are connected to are plastic on that street
@811chicago512 күн бұрын
Plastic gas services with trace wires are easy to locate when the trace wire is properly connected to the main line. However, in your case, the trace wire might be buried beneath concrete or cut too short to the surface. Never assume anything, especially when dealing with natural gas. Ensure these services are correctly located by using a low frequency. Using 200 kHz carries a high risk of signal bleeding onto the water service, leading to its missmarking as a gas line. When encountering such issues, always push it back to the gas company for resolution.

I'm a private locator and when we have to do surveys and have to mark public utilities when it comes to Comcast if I have a pedestal with three or more cables coming up into it and no other pedestal insight, I will normally clamp all of them to better isolate each signal.
@811chicago523 күн бұрын
That's fine, as long as you don't exceed 8 kilohertz when clamping onto each cable. For locating purposes and preventing damage, it’s best practice to bring everything back to the pedestal to ensure all cables are accounted for and that you didn't bleed over to a different utility while clamping the cables.
@Utility_Detective23 күн бұрын
@@811chicago5 yeah normally I would definitely love to be able to bring everything back to the pad but on the private side, we normally never get any type of prints when we do surveys so gotta do everything by looking around. But that's a nice thing about surveys there because they normally take a while and, they are low risk since they do not dig.

Thank you. Good info.... Would at 50MA cause it to bleed out about 11 ft giving out a false reading ?
@811chicago52 ай бұрын
If your transmitter is set to 50 milliamps, there's a risk of signal bleed onto neighboring utilities. However, by adjusting your equipment to 512 Hz with 50 milliamps and ensuring the receiver gain isn't excessively high, you can minimize bleed-over. When detecting a signal 11 feet away, it's not a false reading but likely bleeds onto a shallower utility nearby, rather than the intended target at greater depth.

I exclusively do MCI only in Southern California and 95% of the time they have that orange tracer wire either I use 33khz majority of the time or 8khz sometimes. Rarely have issues of bleeding or not able to locate. The new builds have a solid orange conduit with a second conduit that contains innerducts that provide a blue tracer wire and also use 33khz. The old MCI builds have that green tracer wire. If they dont contain any tracer wire I just use a duct router either a 250ft or ask for an extension to use our 1,200 ft duct router. Very rare that we escalate to utility company. And should demonstrate grounding on the metal of manholes when there is no dirt thats what I do. Enjoy the videos 👍
@811chicago52 ай бұрын
The old green tracer wires are superior because they're pure copper, unlike this new orange wire which is useless. And using 33 kilohertz? Not wise, especially here in Chicago where we've got countless buried utilities. Dealing with 320 Hz already causes issues with interference onto other lines. When it comes to their dialectical fiber, if they don't provide the wire, we often end up pushing the responsibility back onto the client to install it. Many times, when running a fish tape, we risk interference with streetlights, leading to fiber hits. That's why we insist on transferring liability back to the client.

All I say is when there's a trace wire no matter what kind it is I'm at least sort of happy because on the private side you run into so many places with cameras or private fibers that the companies put into their property with no trace wire they just wanted to save money and then get pissed at the locator When it can't be found.
@811chicago52 ай бұрын
When they install on a private side, many times they don't even consider how to locate that fiber. When it comes to locating the fiber, not all companies really focus on that aspect. The installers simply install what the engineers specify. Many of these companies don't even think about locating that utility until an issue arises if you know what I mean.
@Utility_Detective2 ай бұрын
@@811chicago5 yeah I know I work on the private side. But it's every single time when the fiber cannot be found and we discuss with the building or site engineer and a lot of the time they will come back with they just didn't want to spend the money for the tracer wire and didn't think it be a problem.
