Who is your favorite trick or treater?

Through a ton of research I've pinpointed when Shock died: 1923. Back then Halloween costumes could pretty much be regular clothes with masks. I assumed she, Lock, and Barrel died in the same year due to their unbreakable relationship. Back in the day children were allowed to misbehave on Halloween (that's actually why candy is involved now. It was to negotiate with them to get them to stop being so destructive). One of the worst was a group nailed a wheel to a roof. Sounds right up Lock, Shock, Barrel's mischievous alley, right? I have a throery that connects a lot of the theories surrounding the trio and Oogie Boogie: Lock, Shock and Barrel (Louis, Shirley, and Barry as many fanfics decided their real names were) were best friends. They did just about everything together. It was getting late that fateful Halloween night in 1923. Shirley said it was time to head home; but Louis being the mischievous, arrogant leader he is pushed them into pulling a prank on just one more house. But this house was not the house to be pulling pranks on. The infuriated homeowner kidnapped them on the spot and locked them in the basement as punishment. They tried to escape multiple times. Barry being the sweet, naive 5-year-old that he is mistook multiple bottles of alcohol as something that was safe to drink. Louis and Shirley weren't paying attention until their friend fell unconscious. The homeowner took Barry upstairs placed him in a barrel and dumped the barrel in a nearby river. The homeowner got angry at Louis for allowing Barry to drink the majority of the alcohol, pulling the prank in general, and all of the escape attempts (which Shirley came up with most of them, Louis took the blame because it was kinda his fault that they were in this position), and locked him outside in the snow where he sadly died. The homeowner had some electrical problems but didn't want to call anyone in for the job. So he got Shirley to help him with it. Where a few wrong moves later, she got electrocuted. But to shed any light to this story, the friends were reunited in Halloween Town and don't remember their past lives! Where they continued to misbehave. Fast-forward years down the road, they misbehaved a little too much that day and had to do grave digging chores as punishment. Where Oogie Boogie met them. Oogie fell down the Halloween Holiday Door when he found it. He wandered the woods since his holiday "New Bug Day" was forgotten and his world that he ruled vanished. Oogie manipulated Lock, Shock, and Barrel into becoming his henchmen. Yeah, pretty dark. Actually this is darkest thing I've ever came up with. I know it's just me combining a whole bunch of theories together, but I feel terrible for Lock, Shock, and Barrel now. I was thinking about writing and posting this as a fanfic titled "What Happened 100 Years Ago". With the reunion chapter posted on Halloween 2023 just adding to that bitter sweetness. I'm not sure if I should do it, though.

I thought they were drowned in a bathtub on halloween and that's why they ride around in one in Halloween town, and being Halloween oogie would've had the opportunity to be in the real world to eat or scare misbehaving children, instead of eating them he took pity on them, adopted their souls and took them home to Halloween town I like hearing all these theories though they're all interesting, this is just my theory, the names lock shock and barrell I think could've been nicknames given by oogie as they would've forgotten their real names after death, which I've seen in a few ghost movies and stuff where the spirit will have amnesia because they were taken before their time and they have unfinished business on earth etc Not sure if I've written this well enough to make sense but that's my thoughts on it 😅

One of my favorite theories is that they're not dead but infact sterotypes of halloween! Lock being an Imp as you can actually see his tail reacting to his emotions in a few scenes, and one where his tail is actually wagging as he suggests what to do with Santa or Sandy claws. Shock being a witch ofc and Barrel being a ghoul as he like Lock as a inhuman look to him which is, his frog feet! Ofc these three are my favorite characters and I love to imagine what they woild be like grown up so I always like to think of them as just orphans from halloween town.

Got into Nightmare Before Christmas not too long ago so as of now I've never looked deep into the lore. However your last and personal theory is the best in my opinion because of the trio's allegiance to oogie boogie as you mentioned. Thanks for always looking deeper into all Disney lore! 🙂

i grew up on this film and lock shock and barrel are a "kid friendly" version of lock stock and barrel. And original characters to the movie which is based of the poem tom burton wrote. All of halloween town is based on various traditions of halloween/ samhain. Like jack is the story of jack o'lantern and seen as a scarecrow due to the old nature of harvest festivals. witches flying across the moon, vampires who suck blood slowly started to add to the traditions and folktales. The three trick or treaters are part of the old meaning of trick or treat, which was to dress up as spirits to trick them while going house to house asking for a treat or to be tricked. the characters in question are imps that are the henchmen of oogie boogie. they hold up as part of the tradition, but largely do his bidding. the poem is a good start to really look into the mind of tim burton and this story.

Were I penning a dissertation, it would be entitled Lock, Shock, and Stockholm Syndrome. I think Oogie did kidnap them, and they came to identify with him primarily. They had loving families, or not so loving, somewhere.

My theory is that Barrel tumbled down a hill and land in a barrel, kind of like the term barrel rolls, that planes do, but it ended in a more sinister way for him because it caused him to choke on a lollipop which then rolled into the ocean. When Lock and Shock found him, they pulled the barrel they found that was floating in the ocean, when they brought it ashore, they found Barrel's dead body with the lollipop still stuck in his throat, and he never stopped enjoying lollipops, even in death in the afterlife. With Shock I think it has to do around Christmas time where she got electrocuted with Christmas lights, where she got her name from being Shock. With Lock, I feel like he was so sad that Christmas that he went outside to build snowmen of himself and his friends together, then it got cold, so he tried to get back in the house and the door was locked. Then he was locked outside freezing to death dying of hypothermia. Because think about it, Lock looks as if he's frozen to death and the only time it gets insanely cold in the teens or below freezing is in winter time, it would make sense since this movie has both perspectives on Halloween and Christmas. Shock definitely looks as if she got electrocuted, which is why I came up with the idea of the Christmas lights that could have electrocuted her. But also think about her hair, like you said. But that's all kinds of witch's natural looks, their scraggly hair. But there should be a huge detail that it had something to do with electricity or getting electrocuted. Or it could be, when Charlie Brown was shocked, his hair stood on end. People can die from heart attacks, like being scared to death. This could have also resulted when she saw Barrel being dead, she had a heart attack and then later died from it. With Barrel, he does look like he's been drowned because his hair and lips are discolored, same with his sunken eyes, that could have filled with water and then the pressure could have burst, causing his eye sockets to become soggy and droopy. With Lock being frozen his lips are also discolored as if he had been frozen. The reason why he came back to life to be a part of Halloween Town is because his costume is warm. The devil is warm, fire is warm and that's what his costume resembles, being a warm creature that warmed up his body. With Barrel, skeletons are dry, so the fact that he's a skeleton could make him dry and not wet after being drowned. With Shock, she's a witch, and witches use spells and dark magic. Electricity conducts power and energy, so that's a reason she could have come back to life. Barrel could have died as a result of being the bait for their traps, that Lock and Shock used him for. Just like when his head got caught in an actual barrel or cauldron, his face was dusty and dirty.

Locked in a freezer (that was actually pretty common back in the day because they had latches that didn't open from the inside.) Also its not cold enough in October to freeze. Drown in a barrel of water. Shocked. Murdered children.

I got a book "The Battle for Pumpkin King" and looking online, it says it's a prequel to the movie and while I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, it does show Lock, Shock, and Barrel in it.

I like the idea more that Lock was locked outside while trying to pull just one more prank (or 5) despite it being cold enough for hypothermia to mess up his judgement and kill him (can happen at temps as high as 10°C/50°F), Shock was attempting a very clever prank involving messing with new-fangled electricity thing, and Barrel had set up and filled a bathtub or barrel with water where someone would trip into it. He was going to watch the prank unfold from a roof or treetop, but fell and hit his head so hard he fell unconscious, and thus was drowning. Then came the idea that Ooogie beat the Grim Reaper in a gambling challenge and offered each kid a ticket out of death and into Halloween Town. (Death being beaten in a game or gambling has its own long history in folklore). This could also help justify why our three favorite trick-or-treaters are so devoted to him: gratitude and delight at their escaping death into the most amazing quasi-afterlife they could have ever wanted. Bonus historical aspects: there were Little Ice Ages from the 16th to 19th centuries, so freezing temperatures on October 31st were possible further south than nowadays. A single watch of Dr. Suzannah Lipscomb's Hidden Killers episode on the Victorian and Edwardian Eras show just how terrifyingly easy death by electrocution was, especially for children. Certainly people did get struck by lightning Now I've got a fanfic idea...

I think lock shock and barrel followed the boogie man Into Halloween town

I just watched this video from Deluxe that theorized that barrel is the little blue boy from Coraline. But I think not only that but maybe oogie is some sort of paternal figure in the real world. Maybe he groomed him to lure his friends? That's why they all hate him, he got them killed. If we believe that the little blue boy is barrel, we can look at the picture of the sad boy losing his ice cream. In movies, Ice cream is associated with nostalgia. It also represents struggle or conflict for an innocent person. In Coraline the little blue boys ice cream is on the ground in the real world, but he's enjoying it in the other world indicating that the loss of his "ice cream" that effected the boy wasn't in the other world but conflict was still represented in the ice cream itself. Which is how LSB act. Uneffected by death or monsters... except oogie. Oogie broke the boy down (represented by the choice of dessert, ice cream) killed him and his friends (the loss of his ice cream) but then. In the other world oogies problems are back with him. Even though he no longer suffers the loss of one of his hardships he still has internal conflict. Also blue boy is the name of a weapon that has a double barrel.... But I just needed to get this out lol

I’ve always tried focusing on the background decor where Oogie boogie lives to see if I see an electric chair or something that could cause a deadly shock. Or things like a barrel or a lock.

I thought barrel was for gun barrel and they died on Halloween

with all the facts in the video, I’m now starting to think what if lock with his bad behaviour on halloween he tried locking someone else out, maybe a family member who tried stopping them form the storm about to happen that night, but once he didn’t listen and left the adults locked in and after the night the rain made a lot slippery and he couldn’t open the door going to his death? And for shocked mabey after the rain she came in the plug something in and because she hadn’t dried if before the got electric
