Locking your bike should be straight forward - well I got it wrong haha. So thought I would share some tips on the best way of securing your bike while out and about.
I've been using Hiplok locks for a few years now so super excited to have them as a channel sponsor! :) Happy days!!
Here are the two locks mentioned in the video:

Top tip. Any gaffe tape around the bike stand, check to make sure someone has not cut through the stand. They come along later, remove the gaffa tape and steal your bike. Also, give the bike stand a pull as some can lift out the ground.

Thank you, Katie. I'm 76 years old and live on the west coast of Canada. Your weather is probably similar to ours. I have just started riding a bike again but now it is with an e-Bike. These bikes are much heavier than a normal bike. The problem I have had is riding a bike that is the wrong size. My bike was simply too big and I did not feel comfortable on it so had to exchange it for something smaller. E-bikes are great for seniors with mobility issues. Hiplocks are great. I use the Z Lock Combo and their heavy-duty Hip Lock Original.

Lock the top tube (as opposed the the down tube) whenever possible. Thieves do attempt to leverage their bolt cutters by pushing down on one handle whilst other handle is pressed against the ground.

First time I used my Hiplock (the wearable chain one), having bought it minutes beforehand, I didn't realise that I needed to undo the clip and put the lock through both ends of the chain. I ended up leaving my bike in full view on Oxford Street in London for 5 hours effectively unlocked. Someone would only have had to unclip the strap from the padlock to remover the lock. Couldn't believe it was still there when I got back. That said, now that I know how to lock it, I swear by it. It's a brilliant chain lock.

I know this is an old video, but there are a few angle grinder resistant d locks on the market now, including Hiplock I believe. I use a Litelock X1 (at 1.7kg, it's anything but lite) for the very rare occasion that the bike is left for a long time and I use a Hiplock Z Combo for short stops like refilling water, using the loo, etc. when out on solo training rides

Katie, at 3:19 you have just said "top tube or the down tube" but the part of the bike you are pointing to is really called the seat tube. The down tube is the big tube that goes from the headtube (where the fork fits through) and runs down (thus the name) to the bottom bracket.

Great video Katie! New sub here and new to cycling! I was informed lock according to value: Frame, rear wheel, and then front wheel. Lock the frame with the rear wheel with a D-lock then either another D-lock for the front wheel or a chain would suffice.

The combination zip tie locks are obscenely easy to unlock, but I'd use it, or a retractable mini cable lock just to secure my helmet to the saddle rail and top tube if I don't take my helmet with me but I'm near enough to the bike. The D lock and thick cable extensions are good security, though I'd put the D lock through the rear tire and seat tube and immovable pavement rack, and the cable lock through the front wheel from the D lock.

Katie: you can put the ziplock very close to the frame, so that a cutter can’t cut it. Also katie: puts ziplock on bike with lots of space for the cutter to cut into it. Ziplocks are cut in a few seconds. Even with ordinairy simple cutters. Most locks are picked in minutes and less. Check ‘lockpickinglawyer’ for that. Better use multiple locks (not the zip ones) form different brands. In my country they steal a lot of ebikes, for which the have brand-specific ‘keys’ to open them. They just lock for the brand and have the right tools to steal them. A lot harder with different brands of locks. Also know how to pick lock a, they might not know about lock b. And and the end of the day its a pain anyway.

Some time ago, the key of my lock had broken off. Fortunately it was close to my home, so I went home, fetched a metal saw, came back and started to cut off the lock.It was quite a crowded street, with restaurants and cafés. But no one really cared abot me, cutting off the lock. Two girls were passing by and even asked if they could help. I still find it funny, thinking about it. I mean, I could have been a thief :D

Hearing stories like this and also what I went through makes me want to start a KZfaq Channel about how easy it is to steal a bike and then wait for the person to show up looking for their bike and then show them the video of how long it took me to steal it...hoping they'll buy a better bike lock. But then I watch the lockpickinglawyer and realise how much of a waste of time that youtube channel would be... lol // A bicycle is stolen every 30 seconds in the US. That’s roughly two million bikes a year, totaling about $350 million. How many world wide (probably one every 5 seconds. To give you some perspective, less than one million motor vehicles are stolen each year in the US.

Unfortunately the cable run through the U Lock and the little zip tie lock would only last about 5 seconds each with the hand held bolt cutters in the back of the work van I drive. The full size U Lock would need an angle grinder to get off in a couple of minutes so that's definitely a worthwhile deterrent. I was using a heavy U Lock plus two cables on my bike in dodgier areas. I found one of the cables cut and marks on the U Lock but nothing more. Perhaps they were disturbed or just gave up? So I escalated my precautions. Minimalism isn't really in my vocabulary. I got a 2 metre gold rated chain with a diamond rated mini U Lock plus my existing gold rated U Lock. It all weighs about 7kg. But if someone really wants the bike then they're really going to have to work for it. If it's not resting on the ground, a loose chain is much more difficult to cut with an angle grinder than a U Lock and also more dangerous for the thief because it increases the risk of shattering the angle grinder disc and subsequent potential injuries. And having great locks or chains counts for little to professional thieves if you have it all locked to something that's easier to cut through instead. What needs to be done is a universal MANDATORY registration system for every new bike sold and an unremovable unique Registration number engraved into the frame at time of purchase. If a bike can't be sold, it's not worth stealing.

Get rid of the zip lock you can cut it with tin snips in 2 seconds! A good Ulock like the Kryptonite Faghettabout it NY lock is the best! They can still cut it with a hand held grinder, but it will make alot of sparks and noise, the problem is most people wont get involved so they can still get it but it is a deterrent! Just never leave your bike out of your sight for too long!

You're braver than me. If I'm out and about, I carry 2 D-locks, hiplock cable lock and a z lock of I'm leaving my bike for a prolonged period of time. Locking rear wheel and seat tube then front wheel to a solid bike rack, then using the Z lock to lock the front wheel to the bike frame and then threading the cable lock through everything again. Any less and my anxiety would be through the roof 😅 although generally I never leave my bike anywhere out of sight, ever, I bought a brompton for errands and city cycling - even bikepacked the Ardennes on my trusty little Brommie!

If you thread your cable through the wheels and also through the pannier rack and seat it makes those more difficult to steal too. And always hide an Air Tag on the bike (not in the tube as it will mask the signal). And register it with the National Bike Register (or whatever you have in your country). And permanently and prominently mark your bike with a security code. I also use a particularly nasty booby trap on mine, but that's almost certainly illegal so I won't say any more 😉

You can join them together also to make a huge cable tie. (Unless you have some huge single cable ties 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣) Il never lock or put a lock onto my road bike, my paint and carbon is too precious 😜. Pedal oot pedal in! 😬 I have used those steel cable locks with the plastic coating on my bikes as a kid/teen .Key operated. Just goes on the house key- key ring. Never lost my house keys!

Locking a bike plays right into my OCD. I also use redundant locks like U locks, big bulky chains. thick cables and hiplocks when I have my bike on the platform rack on my car. Still looking for a decent lightweight solution for those cafe and restroom stops.

No you don't. You will never ever buy a bike lock again. Or worse, like me, you will buy like 20 ;) In the end, if someone wants your bike they'll get your bike, learned this the hard way. Expensive Abus key flexed through in my locked cellar. Anyway, something like that zip tie lock or similar stuff is just to prevent someone from hopping on your bike and riding away with it, while you actually are right next to it paying your coffee or something, nothing more.

If you go with his advice you'll be locking your bike with a lock that costs twice as much as your bike (and weighs twice as much). As long as you assume that thugs on the street aren't equipped with his skill (and specialized picks) you can find some great locks (and avoid some expensive flops) with his advice. Highly advertised locks (such as some of the zip style ones) are easily defeated with simple tools.

I did check him out... and even the lock that he recommends as the best bike lock shows people on Amazon who are angry due to having their bike stolen because someone cut through THAT lock...lol

I have a teeny $5 lock. I never leave my bike out for long. Just a short dash into a shop to get me something to eat or drink. No key needed as well, just a number combination. Besides, there's another upside of not owning a $10.000 bike :-) When I got my (secondhand) mountain bike I removed over 2 kilo's worth of locks from it and replaced it with my ehm 200 gram one. I DO love the ziptie lock though.!

Love the zipp lock.... I use the kryptonite mini lock... it's quite a long mini cable.... enough to lock 2 maybe 3 bikes together... doesn't matter which lock all u want to do is stop the opportunist from running off with your bike.... Of course should you commute then you need the cables and D locks....

I know the Hiplocks are good, but there's this presumption that with those you're always going to want to stick it into your belt, pants, or back pocket, with those attaching arms, which strikes me as kind of uncomfortable and maybe not so secure for riding a bike. It seems like the idea of wearing a leather pistol holster with bike riding. I don't trust doing that, even though I often pack a gun otherwise. I think 14mm is close to the bottom end for the size of the shackle for strength. Probably good enough. I don't think the bigger size bolt cutters can hack this size. the same as 16mm. Good looking lady with nice hair and hands.

How do you fix glasses with a cable tie?
@lazurm

At 3:17 you said "downtube" when you meant to say seat tube which is the tube that holds the seat post. Also, you may think that a cable helps protect your front wheel but it takes less than 5 seconds for any cable to be cut, any cable. Better to use Pitlocks or Hexlox on your front wheel. You can also use your D lock to include the front wheel by taking the wheel off and placing it inside the D lock, along with your frame and rear wheel. Or, you can use an additional, small (for weight reduction), D lock to lock your front wheel to your down tube (the tube that water bottles are usually found on). You didn't mention protecting the seat from theft. Pitlocks and Hexlox can usually cover that. As for that zip lock type item, you mentioned how you can get it tight enough so that a thief won't have much room to get any purchase with their cutter and then you use it in such a way to allow a ton of room for cutting. There are many other techniques but I'm just addressing the issues you had in your video. For instance, there are several great D locks but I use the Oxford LK348 Alarm-D PRO because whatever the thief touches meets with a 120 decibel alarm which is great if I'm inside nearby. Either way, most thieves would run from it. Other great D locks, if one can afford them, are the Skunklock and the Hiplock D1000 (when they're available) both of which strongly prevent the use of a thief's most potent weapons, the cordless angle grinder and a cable cutter.
