A comatose patient who was found to be pregnant after being sexually abused makes a breakthrough as it is discovered that she isn't unconscious, but is suffering from locked in syndrome.
Season 2 Episode 16 "Prisoner's Dilemma"
Dr. Manning treats a comatose patient who was sexually abused and is now pregnant, but later discovers that the patient has been in a paralyzed state after a suspected stroke. After an educational visit to a psychiatric facility, Dr. Reese finds one of the teens there has harmed herself as a means to see her and soon comes to believe the patient was wrongly admitted to the psychiatric facility. Also, Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Latham operate on a young girl who collapsed mid-flight while Dr. Choi, April, and Clarke treat the girl's mother, who has ingested balloons of cocaine.

Death can be a mercy. After all, living like a corpse is no living at all. The parent had watched her suffer for so long they just wanted to give her the mercy of release. Although I do disagree with the pregnancy.

I see a lot of comments saying she should've moved her eyes from the beginning. Let me paint you all a picture. She got into a car crash or an accident that caused her trauma. Upon first meeting with the emergency response team, a quick evaluation was given. The patient was unresponsive probably because apart from her whole body being paralyzed, she also was still unconscious from the crash. Now, a few days have passed and a full body evaluation and examination was done everyday that made them conclude it was coma. Sure the examiners opened her eyes and ""she could've move them"" but a lot of factors could have also prevented this such as patients sleep wake cycle being already messed up because of them having no sense of day and night, examination are only done very rarely during maintenance phase, patient is entirely confused and unaware of her capability to move her eyes.

@Isabella allen a living will is the person’s decisions being made before they are in a condition like this for how they would want to be treated just in case. OP is saying that living will and euthanasia requests as part of those wills should be used more often and treated as a patience wishes if they end up in a vegetative state or locked in. My family already knows that if the only thing keeping me alive is a bunch of machines breathing or pumping my heart for me and there is no chance of recovering in any significant way then pull the plug. Lying in a bed only able to see the inside of your eyelids doesn’t really sound like a life to me.

When youre locked in you dont fully realise youre not moving your eyes, if you try to move your eyes right now the only stimulus telling you youre moving it is sight, and after several months or years of your eyes being shut it takes time to adapt to see, so she feels like she is moving her eyes but is not, but up and down is visible to others. Nah, it wasn't and he was also very focused on the assault like when he said "so she was awake when some monster assaulted her!?" He was concerned and angry and I know that right now my dad would do the same thing, he'd probably lead the invention himself and my girlfriend would probably be murdered when he found out

I read a lot of people telling they want to be dead instead. Recently I had an lecture giving by a man with locked in syndrome, he could only move his eyes and communicate really fast with them, thanks to alfabet spelling. I had the opportunity to listen to his story because I am becoming a speech therapist. He told about how he communicate and how he lives in his own!! Place all made possible but just moving his eyes. Before he was locked, he had a normal life with his wife, a big company and 2 kids. Now he sees his kids growing up and he has a new company going on, for making his dreams come true. He can do everything but does it in different ways. He also told he wanted to be dead first, but now he is proud and keeps setting goals to live life at the fullest.

@@naemi1985 you should also read The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, a book written by a french editor for Elle magazine with locked in syndrome who could only move his eyelid, who communicated by having people recite the alphabet and him blinking when they got to the letter he wanted.
