Just call the cop. I was like 10 years old and was lost in Zhenjing - a third-tier city in an icy winter. I was crying in front of a factory. A female worker was off work and on her way out. She saw me and took me to the police station. I was watching soccer with the policemen and maybe drank some tea until my family came pick me up. Call the cop. Sad face.

The guy couldn't communicate with the door guy, would be lucky to come across the police.... unless they were cracking down on foreigners, then could end up like the Canadian ESL teacher, pulled out of class just because the want to send as message to Canada (aka Huawei's CFO).

@@deany1980 Chinese police have a special division who speak well English to help the foreigners. Actually, people in China tend to treat foreigners very carefully because it might become a diplomatic issue, and people don't want to make trouble for the government. Chinese police aren't like any police elsewhere. A lot of them don't have to deal with very huge cases (Because we have a few murders, a safe place), so the majority of their times was spent to help with ordinary matters, like if a couple argued each other upon their kid's education, the police would help to communicate, or some old people could not find their way home, someone making too much noise, etc. They would try their best to help to solve the conflict before it becomes violent or turned into a lawsuit, so that's why people usually trust them.

@@deany1980 A few years earlier, these people who pick up the locks, not as thieves, work as a business. Now they connect themselves with police because the police want to make sure these people are registered, but if you call 110 in China, they would actually send your number to a lock picker, and they would come to help you with almost any kind of lock. But they would keep it recorded in case if you asked them to pick someone else's lock.

Super video! A few months ago when I left my phone in a shanghai taxi as I arrived home, very luckily my Chinese GF came over 10 minutes after it happened, called my phone and the taxi driver picked up and we managed to get it back. That experience and the video above is exactly why I spend about 10 minutes at my front door checking 10 times in each pocket to ensure I have everything. It's basically why I arrive everywhere late.

So, maybe this has a couple of problems with the plot. He could have found another tenant at the apartments to get him in contact with the landlady. And, at the end, how did he figure out where to go to run the tea scam? But, anyway, it’s pretty good. I know what China is like, and so I could see myself changing in the same way there. It’s a society with less trust and more competition, compared to Western countries. Someone could change and begin to do things he wouldn’t have done in his native country.

I got on the same situation. Door to the building blocked and was not reacting to the electrical key, you can only open it with metal key or open front inside the key which one I didn’t have. It was in the middle of the night so I couldn’t get to my house. I was with Chinese friends and we started calling all Neighbors to come out and open the main door but it was late and they refused and did want to help or even yelled at us through the speaker. So we asked security guy to give a key from the door key didn’t match. So I ended up sleeping in the hotel. I had my phone and money and passport with me so it was easy but not pleasant at all. So I think Chinese people really help out a stranger. Feeling more alone now
