IMPORTANT NOTE: The only ways to remove a trapped key are (1) to enter the house trough another door or window and disassemble the lock from the inside, or (2) drill the lock. Use accordingly. 👍 In addition, note that this trap works only if your door opens by turning the lock core counterclockwise. However the cylinder can be modified to work by adding construction keying holes on the left side of the core.

I know a locksmith who creates trap locks to recover lost or stolen master keys , the perpetrator with the missing master tries to nose around in a locked storage room , key is recovered and no need to re-key the entire facility

I once worked for a douche who had over 100 rental units and he wanted me to put them all on a Schlage master key system. No problem. Then he says 'And make me up a bunch of master keys.' So I did. Then he starts handing out master keys like popcorn to anyone who needs entry, instead of only the regular key. Drywallers (those honest, dependable drywallers), paint touch-up crews, furniture movers. He lost track of most of the masters and then his tenants started complaining about shit coming up missing. lol I tried to warn him, but he was a douche.

You could also have this for a key where the new cut is lower than the old cut. This by having a T master wafer instead. So when the new key is inserted, both the key pin and T pin will be in the core, and the driver pin will be in bible (no trapping). When the old key is inserted, both T-pin and driver will be in bible, and thus trap the core. Same also works for mixed keys. For those locations where the new cut is shallower than the old cut, you put the T pin as driver, and normal masterwafer. And for those locations where the new cut is deeper than the old cut, you put the T pin as mw, and then a normal driver.

It's not just ex partners who have those keys, it's disaffected ex-employees, ex-tenants, dog sitters and many more,. Or even a professional who cuts your copy keys and if you had the money comes to replace locks on doors. But now i see, you have enlightened me. There is so much more. So much so, in fact, that if i ever had the cash flow, i would definitely hire a professional like yourself to handle all my locks, every single one of them on whatever i had locks upon. This trap set is amazing, you would have helped recover the culprits key copy while assuring the person could not gain access so easily. And you would have help to prove (fingerprints on key in door) that a subject maybe made unlawful attempted break-in, maybe by a stay away order or a criminal trespass in an eviction. Its just mind opening. A locksmith unlocking the secret life of locks, thanks LockPickingLawyer. If i ever get rich i am going to hire you as my lock expert!

If one were to grind the construction holes into slots or ramps, would it be practical to make the lock so that one of the keys could only turn it in one direction while the other could turn it both ways? Such a thing might also be good for a challenge lock, since picking to the wrong shear line would give a very deep false set but not an open (since the lock would turn to the position of the construction holes but then get stuck there).

Thanks for the acknowledgement and I'm glad I inspired you to work it out yourself. Your method is easier than mine where I modified the cylinder. Although I'm not sure they had T-pins when I did this in the early 90's. Now, with that said, it had me thinking of an easier way to remove the trapped key (especially if it's your only door). This is what I came up with, but it does require modifying the cylinder. And also require a little trial & error. 1. Find a small ball bearing that will fit into the construction keyholes. Measure the depth of the hole with the ball bearing in it. 2. Drill a very small hole (diameter of the above measurement) to the right side of the keyway that lines up with the bottom of the construction keyholes. 3. Place the ball bearings into each construction keyhole. 4. Now a thin rod inserted into the new hole (may need to be tapered) should push the T-pins up to the shear line, allowing the key to rotate. Now, this would also allow someone with the wrong key to still enter, but they would have to know what that little hole was for and have the right tool. You can also get a small sticker to cover the hole to make it less obvious. This is untested, but I think it would work. If anyone sees a flaw in it, let me know. Thanks.

worth considering: key traps won't trap keys if the cuts are progressively deeper. we don't usually allow such bitting because without a 'wiper' (a high cut near the tip) pins can become stuck at the shear line. but if you did key it, say, 12345 or 11235 etc. your key trap might not hold the key.

Jesus is more reliable. A burglar was slipping through the window of a house he was going to rob. Suddenly out of the pitch black darkness a voice said, "Jesus is watching you." The burglar froze, but when nothing happened he climbed on in and started creeping through the dark. The voice again said, "Jesus is watching you, and he is very angry." Grabbing his light, he cast the beam where the voice sounded like it was coming from. There on a stand was a large parrot. "Were you the one saying that Jesus was watching me?" he asked. "Yes" said the parrot, "and now Jesus is going to eat your ass." Hearing a noise behind him, he swung the light around and the beam caught the biggest, meanest looking Rottweiler ever born standing in front of the window. "Say hello to Jesus." said the parrot.

Nice. Wouldn’t the last design also trap a key?

what if the lock opens the other direction(turn key clockwise)? wouldn't the construction key holes be on the wrong side and never engage?

Seems likes great idea as long as the the door unlocks by turning the key counter clockwise. But what happens if the door opens by turning it clockwise? I suppose you can modify the core for that.

+Bobby Keyz It will not work without adding construction key holes on the other side of the core. I note this in the description. 👍

Great idea, only bad thing is you can easily enter in your own trap by inserting wrong key, thing which is not so unusual especialy if few persons use same lock.

Old marty eh. Awesome idea. Only u need to be sure and have another door with a key that you can get into in case marty is hiding in the bushes or in a tree waiting for you. Or it could be a hell of a situation. Lol! . Awesome idea!

I floated a similar Idea however in my scenario we just create a reverse builder key situation. The difference being the lock allows the other person to enter. They will not know that we know they entered. Good for someone that is not a threat but we may want to catch them in a lie.

Would this only trap that one specific cut of key? If you had another random key on your keyring with the same profile, would there be a danger the lock could trap that key if you accidentally put the wrong one in your front door?

Make sure you get a new control key cut if you're using one of these titan locks since it uses the same bitting as the operating key!

You turned the old key anti clockwise!! That's quite rare. What if you turned it clockwise?? It would've worked like normal, and not trapped the key, right?!?

The Eminent Joshua E. Hrouda I noticed that too. Also don’t accidentally use a different kwik set key you have on your key ring when you get home and its dark outside.

It's fairly obvious given the numbers you wrote down, but by "higher" you just mean that it pushes the key pin higher, right? Not a higher number of cut?
