THIS CLIP IS INCLUDED IN MY NEWEST DVD BY GREENFROG PRODUCTIONS "24 HOURS IN KIRKWOOD, MISSOURI" TO PURCHASE THIS DVD, CLICK HERE www.greenfrog.com/24Kirkwood_d...
This video was shot on 3-11-06 in Kirkwood Missouri. The train is train CNAAE-08 From the Powder River Basin to New Madrid Missouri.
This video was almost missed...I got out of the house on an excuse of a Job Interview and went down there to see if I could catch Train I-LADU-09.
I missed ILADU09 by 5 minutes, but I decided to stick around since there was a green on Main #2...hoping that it would be a manifest with SD40-2's.
As it turned out, it was this train, CNAAE08 with UP 6741. You can hear me groan when I see that is a plain jane AC4400CW. I can't remember what I said afterwords....the next words I spoke were....
..."HOLY CRAP!"...
This clip eneded up on the 10:00 news on Channel 2 KTVI St. Louis and Channel 4 KMOV St. Louis...
GE AC4400CW....This means.....
GE= General Electric (Builder)
AC= Alternating Current Traction Motors
4400= Hourspower rating (UP's are rated 4350 HP)
C= 3 axel trucks (12 wheels)
W= Wide Saftey Cab
For a reunion of me and 6741 in Rochelle, IL...Click here • Railfanning The Rochel...

Gotta love GE. Never had or saw this on EMD as well as burning turbos and runway prime movers like these 4 strokes

Believe it or not EMD's suffer this same thing but they tend to blow their whole engine killing it immediately while some GE's had to be manually shut down.

Huh interesting. Shot in 2006 but it looks like the early 90s. Almost VHS-like instead of MiniDV or even Video8 looking.

at the repair facility they would just replace the bad power assembly and or bend piston rods and ship it out the door, about 12-24 hours worth of work, GE won't replace a engine unless it has parts hanging out the side and sometimes then they will just weld them back up... UP Machinist

I wired the fuel injection conversion kit that unit, GE supplied us on this unit back in 2000.

As marine engineer, my assumption was crankcase explosion. This can happen through poor maintenance of piston rings and scraper ring when pistons are not pulled as scheduled. Also possibly to scored or scuffed liner. When lub oil in crankcase becomes vaporised through overheating and ignited by bad piston rings and scraper ring and when combustion in any given cylinder leaks through below to crankcase. This has happened on marine diesels (fortunately not so often). This is considered in maritime standard as medium speed engine mainly utilised for onboard electrical generation and governed at fixed rpm (to produce 50 or 60 Hz). Marine engines are generally water cooled principly by desalinated sea water. I am not certain on cooling arrangement for railway usage.

If too much fuel blows by and goes into the crankcase absolutely you can have a fire

What exactly happens in the repair facility when a big diesel like that goes? I'm sure they have spare engines, but it looks like you have to strip off a whole lot of panels just to get at the mechanicals...Looks like something very time consuming......
