West Germany and modern Germany literally have the same name and government so, safe to say West Germany was the "real Germany". Plus, if you include East Germany and Prussia as "Germany", you'd also have to include all the tiny German kingdoms, princetoms, duchys, ect that coexisted with Prussia.

The austrians were the leaders of germany from 1200s/1400s to 1866 when they lost the Austro-Prussian War, being forced to stop being Presidents of the German Confederation and dissolving it. Brandenburg was never leader of Germany because that state never hold the emperorship of the HRE while it lasted. From 1866 to 1871 there was no german leader, instead there were the North German Confederation and several southern german states, after Franco-Prussian war, the german states united into a federation, so the kings, grand dukes, dukes, princes, etc kept their states under the emperorship of the King of Prussia (like in the HRE). The Hohenzollern Prussians ruled germany from 1871 to 1918 when the Empire fell after WW1, then a more unitarian but still federalizated Germany took place. So, this is the top smallest german states (unified or at least nominally unfied): 1. East Germany. 108,333 km2 2. West Germany. 248,577 km2 3. German Empire. 540,857.54 km2 4. German Confederation. 630,100 km2 5. Holy Roman Empire. ~950 000 km2 6?. Carolingian Empire, they were germanic and both dutch language and franconian german dialect derives from frankish language, so we can add it to the list. 1,112,000 km2

I guess it depends on whether you count the times when Hungary was conquered. The Austrians and Ottomans took control of Hungarian land for a very long time.

yeah this is the major flaw of this video, like the Cracow thingy, it wasnt independent, it wasnt Poland, it wasnt a sovereign polish state so you cant say it was Poland. Same with few other countries. Like, a country that is small bcs its in the middle of conquering smth or at the end of losing the war, that doesnt really count.

well, the thing is, modern Germany is a far different concept than it used to be, the hre isnt really the German state, it was a grouping of small states vaguely bound together, even Prussia was only smallest of early 1900s germany, today's is germany, the past ones were some power holding it
