This might be odd, but I saw this video a few weeks after you guys uploaded it. I had also never heard of black currants before (living in the US) and the idea piqued my interest. Anyways, fast forward three years, I am now about to finish undergrad and just completed my senior thesis on black currants, white pine blister rust, and plant quarantine during the progressive conservation movement. Thanks for helping me graduate college!

They were good in one of the fundamental scientific methods - observation. The second one is experiment. It still works the same way - we make experiment, e.g. in Large Hadron Collider and then we observe results. Sometimes, the nature participate in the show and do "experiments" for us, but the observation is always our job :-)

@blasumlily34857 жыл бұрын
Shelby if roses are pollinated (yes "those" roses) they produce fruit, i've seen them myself. they are either light red or dark orange, they don't always form because they usually form in the end of the year, and the cold can kill the hip. however since roses grow back each year and behave kind of like trees. store nutrients, lose leaves, grow them back in spring, etc. rinse and repeat.

Wow this was really interesting! I’m from Finland and black currant is one of the most common berries we grow. I have four bushes of them growing in my yard, they have been planted there in the 60’s by the previous owners of this house. We make juice from black currants and drink it hot when we have the flu, it’s a tradition. The taste is hard to describe, I’d say citrus, berry and mint.

Hey there! Handy Brit here. If I were to describe the taste of a fresh blackcurrant, I would say it's sort of like a cross between a fresh cranberry, in that it is sour and sharp, and a fresh blackberry, in that it has that sort of "juicy" sweetness with just a bit of berry tang on the back of it. That's about as much as sense I can make of it without sounding rarefied xD Over here we mainly use it in boiled sweets, jam and it's a favourite as a cordial.

Wow that's why not to many Canadians in Ontario know about currants in general. Back i Poland we still have about 1 acre black currant field and a few white currant plants by the house. We were picking those black currants and put them in to a steam juicer. That was enough juice for a few families. We used to mix it with hot/cold water, carbonated water or your tea. After the fruits were harvest we were picking the leafs and sell them to the company that was making a herbal Tea. Now we can buy a black currant juice in Polish stores in Toronto area and its awesome to drink straight or mix it with vodka. Cheers!!!

Len P it sounds like a good volume to me. but maybe something with less brass would be better.

I agree. The background music WAS too loud and distracting.

Yes, I think so too. I like the music, but it could definitely be a softer volume! It overpowers his speech at times D:

Fun and informative video, guys. Great job. I'm in Tampa, so can't wait to visit sometime. Quick tip: the background music goes up and down in volume and sometimes drowns out the voice over because it's an older song and music was more dynamic in those days. If you run it through a compressor in your video editor using a mild to medium setting, you can control those dynamics and turn it down all together, making it more even. Or, even better, if you use a "ducker" compression (using a sidechain from the voice over), it does similar to the compressor but will back down whenever the VO starts, making it rise and fall smoothly, while staying out of the VO's way. Good luck!

For Americans (if Greg is out of Blackcurrant candy) you can sometimes find candy labeled as "cassis flavor" in European specialty grocery stores. It may or not be made with actual fruit, but the flavor will be close. I mean, otherwise, buy it from Greg!

They're still banned here in North Carolina. What with places named "Pinehurst", "whispering pines", "Pine bluff", and "union pines" it's no wonder. X3

It's interesting its not banned here in Washington the Evergreen state lol. The pines here must have a natural resistance to the fungus, because we have around 25 species of evergreens, including several pine species. Though obviously not the white pine grown on the east coast.

I could watch you all day doing stuff you clearly love and listening to your voice. Even if most of the Videos show the same steps, but its just that soothing and amazing to watch. Also like i said before, you always make the videos interesting with some beautiful little Nuggets of Trivia you drop in these. Also the music is gorgeous.

I feel genuinely sorry that Americans don't have blackcurrant as a flavour! I'm guessing that means not many of you will have had Ribena? Or blackcurrant Starbursts? So sad, it's my favourite flavour!

I commented basically the same thing! I can't imagine not having blackcurrant candy or apple and blackcurrant juice, mmm!

TheEastieA I think it really depends on where in the U.S. you are. He might not be familiar with blackcurrant in Florida, but a lot of people where I live love blackcurrant stuff, especially candy. The U.S. really is huge.
@jjt41087 жыл бұрын
TheEastieA unfortunately we've not Ribena or blackcurrant starbursts, though I've heard of and seen Duncan of the Yogscast with Ribena all over his mouth he says it's so good! I did however spend part of my life in Hong Kong, so I've had the fortunate experience of growing up with blackcurrant candies 👌

black currants taste like mostly like vitamin c, with earthy citrus notes and a dry wormwood aftertaste, with almost a hint of mint. They taste savory if you eat them fresh off of the plant, which isn't a privilege most people in the US get. I'm not european though, I just work in currant research

Watching this as a sip ribeaner which is made with black currants. Well the flavour is sweet with a slight citrus tinge, it tastes like a berry but its complete unique to other berrys like the diffrence between blue berrys and strawberry's thats why its so hard to describe although it is my fav and i couldn't live without it highly recommend.

Erin Flood Vimto has sweeteners in it, whereas Ribena has only sugar. Being allergic to most food sweeteners (except Sorbitol) sucks, so I always have to keep a running list of what foods they've been added to next.
