Hey woodworkers and DIY people! You can create cylinders, tenons, cones, tapers, etc with this jig! It's super simple to make, using a few bolts from the hardware store. You can make log tenons, log furniture, log cabins, rustic furniture, round tenons, etc. Basically, I needed a way of cutting tenons on raw log wood pieces to fix my broken railing. I bought a drill powered tenon cutter and wasn't quite happy with the results. It produced quick tenons, but they were a little rough; but worse of all they didn't fit in the mortise holes on my deck. I realized the angle of my tenons were probably cut on a 10" table saw. So, I decided to make a jig to create the shape. Instead of $200 for a cutter I made the equivalent for about $5 (excluding wood, which I had on hand) and used my saw. The resulting tenon was straighter, cleaner and looked better. They do take longer to cut! If I was doing a new project, I would likely buy a tenon cutter and not have to deal with the time it takes to use a jig like this. You don't need a mill; and you don't need a lathe to cut these. Or even a drill!
Materials:
* 2 --- 5/16" bolts, 5" length, full thread
* 2 --- 5/16" bolt washers
* 2 -- 5/16" t-nuts
* A few wood screws - 2-1/2" long (drywall screws are fine)
* A 2x6; the length and amount varies depending on the long length that you want to cut tenons on
* A tablesaw!

This is awesome - so glad I saw this before buying a cutter. I already have a nice set of forstner bits so this is perfect. Thanks.

Yeah! It works well and I like the shape better, but it is definitely slower.

I just realized. If I really want to do Tenon cutters I could use the wood lathe I have. Yet this jig can do any possible length if need be just a few adjustments.

ah yeah, a lathe would be a good option! The nice thing about the jig is consistency with the size and angle.

I’m guessing this only works using straight logs that are not to long
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 11 ай бұрын
That's a good point -- I'd say "yes and no" -- the legs don't have to be straight, but the height of the twist (when spun in a circle) can't be larger than the blade can cut. So... with a 10" saw blade, sticking up 3-4", and not cutting a full depth cut..it could probably still do quite large diameter of logs. This would require some experimentation though! But for length: you are only limited to whatever blocks your table saw in feed table.

Nice jig, but it looks like this will only work for perfectly straight logs coming from a lathe.
@CorbinDunn

Mine came from from a green tree I cut down, and stripped the bark. That's it, no lathe work. It doesn't have to be too straight; just straight enough to fit in the jig from each side. I'm sure there are ways to improve on this design, but this basic method worked well for me.
