The Stump Vise allows you to secure the bar of the saw so you have BOTH HANDS free to do the sharpening. Grasp one end of the file with your right hand, and at the same time grasp the other end of the file with your left hand. Now, use both hands to sharpen the chain, by dragging the file across the tooth in one direction from the short side of the tooth to the long side of the tooth(the long side is the side with the point on it, it's longer on that side). I like the Stump Vise, BTW, it does exactly what it's designed to do in the simplest way possible.

Mark, it is a mark of real integrity to admit mistakes. Lord knows I've made them all. Otherwise I applaud you doing a video that will help others learn.

If you use one hand to file you do not need a vise. I had to do that today when I threw out an old work bench that had a vise on it. Kept the vise. Have not used the chainsaw in a few years and a giant ash tree came down. My one arm sharpening resulted in some very crooked cutting. I may order that stump vise.

It's small and compact, perfect for touching up your chain in the field. It will pay for itself the first time.

Thanks. Next time do not shoot your video with backlighting unless you adjust the aperture on your video camera. The trees, shudder and siding are easy to see. You are in the dark.

One thing about logging, it's nice to take a break once in awhile and sharpen your chain. This makes it a breeze.

Space and time actually stopped immediately when the video cut and that tree is still there to this day with him squatting in front of it. It's actually a wonder how we got the footage.

What are you doing to your poor file? They are meant to cut in One Direction, dragging it back and forth will ruin it... guess I should read more comments before commenting myself, apparently you've been edumicated ;>)

This is definitely NOT the proper way to file a chainsaw chain, at least if you want it to last and cut properly. It's a great way to get nicks and burs on your teeth, which means it'll cut like junk. Always file each tooth in 1 direction, an even number of passes per tooth.
