Even though I respect the video and the insight you’ve shared, there’s one workflow I use that kills all the need for this discussion, let me explain: Regardless of whether the session is light or heavy on the CPU, as long as you can playback your session with some CPU headroom, this approach works flawlessly. Put Logic into Low Latency mode. On the channel(s) that you’re recording on, use zero latency plugins (an EQ like Pro-Q and a compressor like the Puigchild, for example). Make sure this channel’s output is routed to the stereo out and not a submix. Create a stereo ‘dummy master’ channel where you can temporarily offload the master channel plugins on while tracking (this may include a look ahead limited, clipper or more exotic EQ). Back to the recording channel, feel free to set up reverb/delay/time based FXs via busses but, because we’re in Low Latency mode, right click on the bus and check ‘Low Latency Safe’ - this allows you to use the bus FX without any latency issues… after all, who needs immediate sounding reverbs - the very nature of reverb or delay means there’s some latency happening. You can continue to record safely in this fashion all day long, even at higher buffer sizes of 256. Hope this makes sense! Worked amazingly well with my aging Mac Pro 5,1 on MASSIVE projects and continues to work well on my new Mac Studio M1 Pro.

I think I’ve found the right video thanks for your help. The issue I’m facing is for example, I record a 2 bar drum loop into logic from my external drum machine as audio. I then copy that 2 bar loop and paste it to the next bar, but the kick comes in earlier than how it’s recorded!! This is terrible when I spend time getting the swing how I like it outside of logic. On the flip side if I just say f**k it, I’ll try record the whole 3 minutes of drums and melody and record my bass line to it after. Then towards the end of the recording is not at the same point on the grid as the start - meaning if I paste a looped bass part it will be later in the pocket than the drums and melody at the end. Sorry for long explanation but I’ve only heard people talking of latency and not the opposite, coming in early. Please help if you can, nightmare fuel this stuff

Someone might wonder, how do I know if the CPU can't cope with the load? You may hear crackles and pops or gaps in the playback. Though once, I heard something like that, and it turned out to be clipping, where a synth got too loud. How did I know it was clipping? The noise disappeared when I put a limiter on the track. If you increase the buffer size and the noise disappears, then it is a probably CPU overload.

Freeze track freezes up to the project end not cycle range.

Unfortunately latency is an issue for me although I have the best equipped M2 Mac mini. I try to solve this when recording vocals by bouncing the whole project as a stereo file, then record the lyrics, edit them, bounce them and import them to the again loaded Logic project!. Is it also okay to mix the vocal tracks to a finished mixed stereo file of the instrumental tracks or can‘t you do that because of any reason? What reason would that be? Thanks for this excellently informing topic about latency.

I use logic on stage live, with 11 update I suddenly lost the ability to remotely midi trigger 'performance' channel strips I've created. Any ideas?

Hovering over the plugin does not work for me. All it shows is the name of the plugin. Is there a setting somewhere for this?

When I hover over a plugin in the mixer, the latency value doesn't appear. What do I need to change to make the value appear ?
