Logic Pro X Stock Compressors vs Paid

The Logic Pro X compressor emulations are a fantastic addition to an already fully featured DAW, but how do they compare to their paid counterparts?
In this video I put all the emualations to the test against plugins from Waves, Focusrite and Slate Digital to hear how they really stack up against plugins you would have to part with money to own. I compare:
Studio VCA - Focusrite Red 3
Studio FET - Slate Digital FG-116
Classic VCA - Waves DBX-160
Vintage VCA - Slate Digital FG-Grey
Vintage FET - Waves CLA76
Vintage Opto - Slate Digital FG-2A
The stock compressors did an UNBELIEVABLE job, and in some cases were preferable to their paid counterparts. Armed with just the stock compressor and its emulations, I don't think there's any mix you can't tackle, or any compression task you can't handle.

Excellent video, not easy to compare apples to apples, as it were, but you did. I think the stock compressors all sounds great and we're lucky to have them. It's great to have different colors in paid compressors too. It's a win-win.

I really appreciate this but am a little confused. Why is it that almost the only time you adjust the stock compressor's settings is the LA2A? Wouldn't the goal of most viewers (like me) be to adjust the stock compressor to the higher cost emulations, not vice-versa?

Great video, thanks. I just wish you'd paid more attention to matching gain reduction-- it seems like most of the time the logic compressor was not compressing as much as the third parties. This was especially noticeable on the SSL comparison, where you were slamming the Slate, but not the logic comp. Anyways, thanks-- confirms what I already thought: the logic 1176 and 160 are good enough that I don't need any paid emulations. The opto on the other hand behaves nothing like an LA2A to me.

Hey man great vid. Definitely will be rewatching it. (TLDR - I think it would’ve been easier to match common settings by changing of the logic compressor, As I think the logic compressor can go faster and slower than the units they are emulating. Also I wonder if the LA2A logic emulation is closer to the CL1B) Only thing is I think the logic compresses are made to go far beyond what they are emulating. Faster, slower, et cetera. Would have loved to seeing you try and match ‘classic settings’ (Like the 1176 Dr Pepper setting or the SSL slowest attack fastest release on a bus) And then try and get the same sound with the logic compresses. Though to all of the end you did start doing that. One thing though is that I know people say the last logic compressor is meant to emulate the LA2A, but I wonder as they left the controls in, unlike they did for the 160, that it might be closer to the Tube Tech CL1B? The logic comp definitely doesn’t do that two stage released then even with the auto button engaged. I think something that is quite telling is that when you click the 1176 precepts all the attacks are set to 50-70 ms. And as the logic compressor allows you to go faster and slower than the real unit I wonder if the attack of 1 to 7 equates to about 10 to 100 on the logic comp.

I totally agree in what you said in the beginning. I think he turned all of the nice characteristics of the paid ones away to imitate the stock plugins. Much of the nice snap in the snare disappeared in all of the examples. The stock ones sounded å bit dull, almost uncompressed. I have just got me Logic pro x and is a bit disappointed. But I am not an expert. Do you agree?

I think in every case the Logic compressors sound better. It’s less squashed and pumpy.

Been using Logic since 1996 (started with MicroLogic) and i still haven't bought a third party compressor. Logic got it sorted.

Excellent in-deep comparison here! One thing I noticed in the corrected comparison of Red3 compressors (9:00) the release on Focusrite plugin is set to Auto, the one in Logic Pro is not. They sound different to me in terms of "ummpf" on the kick drum (more of it in the Focusrite plugin). Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for watching :) They certainly sound a lot different; the Focusrite is compressing a lot more staright off the bat, and takes a bit of manipulation to make it sound similar to the Logic emulation.

I believe Steven himself stated that the FG-Grey isn't modeled exactly off of an SSL-G Bus Comp. They instead modeled it with a Neve transformer, which gives it a slightly different attitude and EQ response

They also improved the bass response to preserve low end. It's kind of a hot rodded SSL

That could be cool to test out. This was really aimed at comparing to paid plugins, but there are a crazy amount of great free plugins out there!

Thanks for the video (and the others). For the Focusrite, i'm not sure about the attack time you mentioned. As Focusrite stated, "the original Red 3 hardware uses the same circuit topology as the ISA130 compressor modules". So, based on this statement, the attack simply can't go from 25 ms to 500 ms (?) as the ISA130 shows an attack time range of 0.3 ms to 90 ms. Maybe that can explain why at the fastest setting in your video, the Red 3 plugin compress so much than the Logic one (0.3 ms versus 25 ms). But maybe i'm wrong. Where do you find the time specs of the Red 3 plugin or hardware ?

Thanks for your answer. I saw these numbers on a forum from the Focusrite support. But something is wrong somewhere : either on the manual of the Red 3, where Focusrite talks about a 1 millisecond attack setting (how could it be possible with a m!nimum attack of 25 milliseconds ?). Or in the answer of the support team. So this VCA comp would start at only 25 milliseconds going to 500 milliseconds ? Never seen an attack time range like this on a VCA Comp. Even the Logic stock compressor don’t go beyond 200 milliseconds ! Anyway, thanks for your videos, very detailed and useful. 🙏 @@SamLoose

Have you ever done a review comparing a digital compressor on logic to an a hardware compressor?

Not yet. I toyed with the idea of doing the Klark Teknik KT76 vs something software, but never got round to it. Maybe in the future. FWIW I think there’s just as much difference between two 1176 software emulations as there are hardware and software.

Trivia: I tested a whole bunch of paid, brand LA2A plugins vs the stock Studio One compressor. Conclusion: Don't waste your money on the big names. Seriously.
