Mixing kick drum and bass is one of the most persistent problems in mixing. If you don't manage your bass frequencies, your low end can soon become an incoherent mess with a kick drum that doesn't punch and a bass part that swallows all your track's energy.
In this tutorial, MusicTech Logic Pro X expert Jono Buchanan shows you how to make space for all your bass-heavy elements including bass, kicks and additional synth, to make your mix more coherent.
Learn to use complementary EQ curves, high-pass filters and compression with a sidechain input to clean up your low end.

Hey Jono, happy new year and looking forward to more great tutorials! Being a bass player, this was such a cool video, quite a lot going on to get that bass sounding nice and clean, but you have given me so much to look into on my recordings and I can now, with much more confidence get it right for the different types of bass I may use on different genres of music. Thank you so much for such a great tutorial as always.

I just finished an exercise in writing a Vangelis-style trailer. I was struggling with managing growly but bass-saturated synth pads. Volume and panning weren’t getting me to clarity and maximum impact. Removing a layer wasn’t an option. I introduced Channel EQ and it did help, but I wasn’t fully understanding the forces at play. The simple concept of competing bass frequencies - the right framing - was an epiphany. I now have a way to sort this out. Thank you! Again! I nominate Jono for Logic Pro Teacher of the Year. Cheers!

so i finally understood side chain! there is a lot of situations where i need to make one setting or plug in mirror or respond to other systematically. Automation for example, how to couple automation? So if you have more on this i am more than thankful!

THat's the clearest description of mixing the bass I've come across. You mentioned at the beginning that the other approach to mixing the bass with the kick is to give the bass the priority-do you have an example of when you would do that?

Brilliant tutorial ! well explained. I just have one question. If the synth bass in your example was to play more than one note in a sequence (which causes the frequency wave in the EQ to shift), would further EQ reduction in the low end then be required ? I ask this because when I have tried doing this myself, but I notice that other notes the synth bass plays end up sounding louder/boomier than the one at 60hz, due to the frequency of the new notes no longer being at the 60hz spot ? If that makes sense.
@jonobuchananmusic
@jonobuchananmusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ryan. Many thanks. It does make sense and the short answer is yes, depending on the tone of your chosen bass sound, you may well need to EQ each note/frequency carefully, if you're looking for ultimate precision. I have a new channel: kzfaq.info/love/-RFQtqWAG6kFPRkumqn7rA so if you're looking for more content like this, do come and join me there. Cheers, Jono
