Fantastic breakdown with great video segments for quick reference! I've been producing for a year, and I got some 3rd party "do it all one-dial" plug ins with a subscription, but I really like there results I get using stock DAW components as of right now. Learn more using these too and I feel more pride when I get a good sound by using multiple stock plug-ins rather than flip this switch broad brush plug ins.

It’s be great if you could add a bit into one of these videos about which situations you’d use each of the modelled compressors in? I tend to default to the platinum or studio flavours so I’m sure I’m missing out on the others!

great video! for my clarity, the compressor is keying off those selected frequencies, but compressing the entire signal (when those frequencies are present), yes? not functioning like a multi-band?

Depending on what filter you select (high-pass [HP] and low-pass [LP] are most commonly chosen). As Jono mentions, the kick is strong in low frequencies, so people often want to NOT compress that along with a whole group of higher frequency sounds that demand less compression by nature. Selecting the 'HP' filter in 'Side Chain' and setting the frequency dial to say 110hz, you are asking the compressor to work on all the 'high' frequencies (all above 110hz in the group). This allows the strong low-frequency kick to not be compressed, while the rest of the sounds are compressed and "glued together." That way your compressor doesn't work as hard across the group because it's avoiding the strong kick. Happy music making!
