When you're the only one playing it ethical in an environment where everybody's playing it dirty, chances are you'll go bankrupt. Vanguard just targeted an industry early, which is why they succeeded even though they went ethical. And tbh their business isn't complicated or risky at all compared to tech companies where things change all the time and bad decisions can easily lead to bankrupcy.

Vanguard has served me well on my way to financial independence. One thing not mentioned is the Vanguard S&P 500 Index Fund may be slow making money but it's also one of the safest investments out there. So long as there isn't a global thermonuclear war or the markets get pumped like Japan's did, crash, and never recover, it will always bounce back from a recession. I lost half my net worth in 2008 only for it to come back by 2012 and double since then.

The biggest thing to give index funds a prop are that not long after they were first created, the USD was taken off the gold standard. So at this point, holding cash would lose value. So anything that matches the market, will be better than the loss of value of fiat currency. Markets in the long term will always grow as population grows.

Hard to distinguish between a ethical business and a competitive business. Are Walmart's prices low because they are trying to help people save or because that ensures everyone shops at Walmart? But even if Walmart is just trying to get as many customers as they can it still can be a good thing and for many people it is a lot wiser to shop there than paying extra somewhere else that is only pseudo superior.

@@holleey From how I understand it, Vanguard the company is owned by the investment funds. The investment funds are, in turn, owned by the shareholders of those funds. Thus, the shareholders of the funds are the shareholders of Vanguard the company. The fund managers then vote on behalf of the shareholders (which I believe you accept when you sign on with Vanguard). So its a fairly "traditional" ownership structure, in that the shareholders have voting rights which they use to control the management direction of the company. Its "unusual" in that the shareholders don't directly buy shares in the company like other publicly traded entities.
@opencardyugioh
@opencardyugioh 2 жыл бұрын
Needs more clarification though. How can a company not have an owner? It is untrackable who owns the company, but how are decisions made. A company and philantropy are just terms, it depends on what they do and who is judging that whether they are evil or not. Philantropy is most of the time just moving money from one pocket to the other, or expecting huge favors back (which is practically paying someone a salary). Also making people rich without providing a value is just extracting money from people. This is especially worrying when they buy houses (even by overbidding), just to sell them later for a higher price (kind of like scalping). John C Bogle died in 2019? Sounds more reason to worry about what is really happening to the company. If not overcharging for services is the only criteria to call something ethical, then you should really re-asses your own morals and values.
